Really really mediocre in almost all respects. But still it's better than actual hideous trash like Ratatouille. It has some charm in some points, unlike the Brad Bird film.

Unironically saw both this and Hoppers in the same theatre with similarly sized audiences. Kids laughed much more with Mario than with Hoppers, which surprised me since Mario's comedic timing is genuinely utter shit.You can knock on Illumination but it's clear they know how to appeal to kids better than others, there has to be some kind of science to that shit. It can't be their use of color or whatever since Hoppers had similarly vibrant tones.
