>afraid of Oogey but still work for him
So they are little shits that Jack shouldn't have trusted? I'm a little confused on where their morality lay. I get that the people of Halloween Town aren't evil or intentional dicks, it's just how they operate, but Lock Shock and Barrel seem like they are intentionally causing trouble. Not out of the ordinary for kids especially henchmen of the big bad, but then why did they also seem to try and be loyal to Jack in every other way like giving a shit about kidnapping Santa to begin with, and why did Jack trust them? Is that just another testimony to his naivety?

They are the mischief makers of Halloween. The kids that will pull a prank or wait in bushes to jump out and scare someone. They exist to be that unexpected element of the night. Like everyone else in town they're pretty easily swayed to whomever is in charge and thus would follow Jack if he was the only one giving orders.
But because they lean towards morally dubious behavior and Oogie Boogie scares them to disobey, they're quick to act as his agents. It's likely they'd want to see Jack and Oogie come to blows to find out which is worth their obedience. I'd wonder if Sally didn't come looking for Santa herself if the kids would have let his location slip just to see how it shakes out (as long as they could do it without Oogie finding out)

A spinoff comic said that they literally have no concept of right or wrong. They're open to the possibility, but they have no idea what those words mean.

Basically moral blank slates.

See, most of that makes perfect sense and I already inferred some of it, but they also sang
>We're his little henchmen, And we take our job with pride, We do our best to please him, And stay on his good side
Do they, as children often do, just want to see crazy shit happen and are along for the ride? It sounds like they genuinely like and respect Oogey beyond fearful coercion.
>Basically moral blank slates.
Huh, how Itoi-esque.

There's nothing as pure or as cruel as a child
