I’ve seen this hashtag online of #DCsoWhite on how DC sucks when it comes to their black characters.

But Marvel ain’t exactly better. Both the Black Panther space miniseries and the Ultimate Black Panther have ended.
Storm is about to end with a miniseries.
Miles Morales latest run already ended.
Blade’s intoning and Blood Hunt event ended years ago.
When’s the last time Luke Cage or Monica Rambeau had a solo series?
Or Blue Marvel? It’s been over a 15 years since a War Machine series of any kind.
I do see Bishop with a new miniseries though.

On the flip side, DC has the current Absolute Green Lantern series.
John Stewart is starring in GLC.
Mr Terrific is leading Justice League Unlimited.
Cyborg will be the last remaining Titan with Nightwing in New Titans.

Companies shouldn't be obligated to release books that don't sell just to pander to a group of people who don't even buy them

DC tends to have smarter black heroes.
Mr Terrific, Steel, Bumblebee, Dr Midnite, Hardware, and Cyborg are all geniuses in their fields.

Marvel's better but not by a lot. They have a few black characters they give some consistent play in Black Panther (if he's not in a solo he's in Avengers), Storm (will be present at least), Miles Spider-Man (Spiderverse popularity really pushed gave Miles a huge boost). But Blade, Doctor Voodoo, Photon, Misty Knight, Blue Marvel, Luke Cage, Patriot and others are all starving even if they get some play once in a while.

It always amused me when Milestone was going for the popular white superhero tropes to give them own spin on, they went with

Spider-Man = Static
But instead of Batman, they went with Iron Man = Hardware

What would a Milestone character homage to Batman look like?
>>

It’s hard to John Stewart and Steel to ever eclipse Superman and Hal in their own franchises.

black Mr Terrific has for sure eclipsed the golden age one.

marvel straight up has better black heroes and they've had better runs than DC's. DC's black heroes are bland and feel like they were made/written to always be support characters even in their own stories. The only real exception is Static who wasn't even theirs and has been fumbled for years
>>
>>153114087
>Storm and T'Challa are far more mainstream and popular.

So why don't they have ongoings? Miles' series only just ended in January while Storm only got 12 issues and the last ongoing for 616 Black Panther ended in 2024

I'd say so.
The main reason is because it's really hard to set up new characters. Very few superheroes introduced post 2000 have taken off.

And while Marvel introduced a litany of popular black heroes in the 70s-90s, DC really didn't
They added Jon Stewart, Mr. Terrific, Vixen I guess. And that's the list.

Though I think DC might be better with Latino characters. Although there are still hardly any Super Spics.
DC has Jessica Cruz, one of the Blue Beetles, and one of the Questions. And I don't think I can name any latino Marvel characters outside of technically Miles Morales.
I've always loved Latin American culture. Probably because my papa was Mexican-American. I think that whole region is really neat.

Storm is not only the most prominent black character of Marvel. You could argue that she is the most prominent female character of Marvel. Thanks to the X-men dominance in the 90's, the character was basically coasting it for the last 25 years and still being culturally relevant.

>DC has better black characters only because marvel had 2 decades (3 if you count the 2010s) where white writers really went all in on the blaxploitation angle.
And because DC has the tendency of making all the Black superheros technology or make them clearly support characters. Even the Justive League Detroit had a tech whiz and support character that was a black dude: Dale Gunn.
That is basically the problem of Mal Duncan that had his advantage of the first black superhero of DC squandered.

Phantom Lady is a WW2 era hero. I believe she's from a world where Nazis won WW2 and is part of the resistance.

Phantom Girl is a member of the Legion of Superheroes, which takes place in the distant future (year 3000 +)
>>
>>153121304
If we go by the 'quantity vs quality argument', an argument could be made that Marvel beats DC in both.

There is a perception (right or wrong) that DC doesn't push or elevate their Black (and minority) heroes or will pay lip service to the idea of pushing them and backtrack when fans complain.

Marvel on the other hand pushes their Black heroes and don't care about backlash, which is why a lot of people on /co/ have issues with them.

>>
>>153112628
Yes in that they pump out 5-10 books for every C lister imaginable. Marvel is also more team based so you're more likely to at least have a nonwhite character on panel talking.

DC is basically the same ~30 characters getting page time across 15 books Batman/Dick/Jason/Tim/Damian/Babs for Batman, Supes/Kara for Superman, Wondy/Donna for Wonder Woman, Hal/John/Guy/Jess/Kyle for GL, Barry/Wally/Bart for Flash, Kory/Raven/Vic/Gar for Titans, Jay/Alan for JSA, Zatanna/Constantine for magic. Occasionally you might get something different like Terrific being the main character of JLU now, or DC trying to let a C lister have a book, but it never lasts long.

>>153124428
She was created by Bendis, his race fetish surpass demographics
>>
I'll say this
Unless your name is Blade or Static, Black Superheroes doesn't sell for kids. For adults? is another 500
Miles ONLY sells because he has the name spider-man all over it and people were retarded and too brainwashed to see the difference, now the illusion died out and miles on a full free fall with no one buying anything anymore.
Spawn only sold because Al Simmons was human BBQ in spawn suit all times and people were fed up with marvel while DC was kicking with good shit at the 90's, when marvel bankrupted the industry with the speculator and collectors crash.

DC tainted John Stewart's legacy, Mr. Terrific is still a midcarder, and all other black superheroes are a mess, and DC isn't going to license Vixen to a japanese to do justice with her out of fear she isn't going to sell.

Also Black Batman FAILED because DC learned that unlike Spider-Man that Bruce Wayne is too strong, no matter how they try to put him down, Batman is Bruce Wayne and Bruce Wayne is Batman, Just as Terry McGinnis is Batman Beyond/Batman of The Future, his approved and beloved Legacy.

Since Absolute is basically the only non-Batman thing that sells, DC unironically needs to make an Absolute team book and put a bunch of B-Z list black characters in it.
>Terrific being the leader who gets them all together
>Black Lightning being the lancer
>Bumblebee being a semi-mad tech savvy scientist
>Vixen being the physical powerhouse
>Doctor Mist as the token magic user
>Beth Chapel/Dr Midnite as the team medic

>B plot of Thunder, Lightning, Blaqualad, Tanya Spears, and Jakeem Thunder doing some shit
>storyline about the Amazing Man lineage being suppressed (make Will Jr Amazing Man II as opposed to his mainline version and make the second grandson a great grandson instead, for four total going back to WWII)
>try to salvage some characters or make them important civilians like Ryan Wilder, Bea Bennett, or Northwind

And then they can do it for their latino and asian characters too.

A lot of the characters do have some fans but not enough to support a solo, and DC is too obsessed with some combo of Bats/Supes/GL/Flash/Amazons taking up 75% of their team rosters at any given time so most of them aren't in team books either.
>>
>>153124755
You might be onto something anon. If you had to pick just one for a Absolute solo who'd it be?

They put him there but they barely tried pushing him. The most attention he had in the title was the Forever Evil tie in where he worked with the Metal Men and having a few pages of forced friendship with Captain Marvel. He was easily the least important member on the team in the long run.
They also fucked up his first solo because they took Reis off of it too early in order to try to push the JLA book with Killer Frost. Sales plummeted after he left. They should've at least locked him in for 12 issues or at least replaced him with another popular artist.
>>
>>153124755
Does DC even have enough recognizable/half way popular latino and asian heroes for team books like that?

They could still do that even with her current appearances. We know her father is Mr Jupiter but post-crisis we don’t know who her mother is.
It could be a case like Irey West.
Her mother is Asian, but she inherited her father’s eyes and hair.

I thought Godspeed was fully Native American.

>Her origin was later retconned, revealing that she was born on Earth to scientists attempting to cure her of a disease

This remains me that there are some fans that want Arsenal revealed to be half Native American or Native American descent on his mother’s side.
The reason being that we’ve never seen anything about his mother and that after his father Roy Harper Senior died, he was raised by his godfather Brave Bow on the Native American reservation.

DC's complete fumble of Milestone reboot still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The Big Bang being a high school BLM rally that turns violent because of a black guy is just comically (lol) out of touch

Which is a great example of how marvel drops the ball hard. They manage to make characters more than just X but black (exception miles) and fail to do anything with them after a writer establishes them.
>>
>>153114804
Nobody gives a shit about comics. They're just kept around out of momentum and a jobs program. Storm and BP are probably the most popular black supers out of DC and Marvel right now.
>>
>>153116649
They resolved that a few years ago. They've been printing some new stuff like the Static/Batman Beyond book.

>>153115537
You don't want them to write it. Wildstorm is just background filler, thrown to crap writers who rework them, or used to meet their gay quotas.

If DC were smart they would spin off a Bronze Tiger series from the current Batgirl ongoing.

The Ivy defense league still exist but don't really call themselves that anymore. They shit on GWW's Poison Ivy book all the for the stupidest reasons. The latest one was Harley dressing as Jackie O for a gag.

>>153124755
I'd earnestly give that a shot ngl, I love Absolute and elseworlds in general and DC is sorely lacking in elseworlds that aren't Batman or Superman related.

Use some literally who black villains too like Papa Midnite, Red Lion, Mr Bones, Gardner, Houngan, Cyborgirl, etc while you're at it.

No, a lot of people still think of Marvel as if they are still in the Alonso era. Yoshida doesn't care about anything other than minmaxing.

ive seenmost of the characters on the marvel side in books in the last few years. on dc my girl empress is just fucking GONE. last seen taking care of her parents a few world reboots then nothing. did she even show up in the young justice show? then theres baby power girl, what even happened to her?

on the flip, they made mr terrific a major league mem and a big part of the last superman movie where he was well recieved, so although i dont like how little theyve done, i got to give them credit for at least trying, because lord knows fanboys would be happy with no black people in comics

Unfortunately Anita Fite is confined to tied to the PAD Young Justice comic era so don’t expect to ever see her again.
Especially since PAD himself gave her the excuse to be raising her parents from infancy than being a superheroine.

Powergirl Tanya Spears could come back. They used her in Future State a couple of years ago.
But which comic would use her?
Deathstroke and Teen Titans are going in different directions than using an obscure character from the past.
But there’s always a potential JLU appearance .
>>
>>153140519
The Young Justice cartoon isn't about Young Justice

It's about Greg Weisman's autistic history of DC fanfic timeline
>>
Marvel has better black roster while DC has better superheroine roster.
Still DC has great ones but outside Static shock , those work better as team characters like cyborg or lighting
>>
>>153141099

you think people are afraid to touch pad characters since hes dead? weve at least seen spirit since young justice ended

>New Spiderman writer learn the worse thing about PAD(killing side characters)
>Spiderverse retards used Miguel as an antagonista(which is hilarious how a corporation is using Miguel to his Miles's shilling , like those fucker never read 2099 to understand the irony)
>Tried to ignore Linda
>His Aquaman felt to be sorta ignore too, his story go from Death of a prince to subdiego to Geoff
Only his Hulk seems to Survive but people use more Pak and infernal
