For the last several days, the idea that the new Citizen V is the bio-duplicate Masque has been an invasive thought. Rationally I know this is a terrible idea for several reasons. For starters, her personality when active was just a poorly defined action girl in a messy, hated story. The fix was she was just acting on vague impressions since she was missing most memories she should have had. The only person that had any real connection to her was an unseen, unnamed dead friend. No one in-universe has a reason to revive her. The best case scenario for clones would be Ben and Kaine, who have been written horribly and best to avoid appearing respectively. Joseph is the nearest neighbor in a mysterious copy of a villain who seemed to be dead and a few assumed they were the original with a longer time to do things with. He still has only feeling remorse for Magneto's actions, getting filtered by how complicated some X-Men relationships are, dying when the original shows up, and being revived to bother the X-Men since Magneto is their ally. The only copies that really serve a purpose are those that can slot into the original's position sneakily like MODOK Superior. For a clone with extra steps because Spider-Man made the "C" word banned, she doesn't really have any uses of organic shapeshifter that treat it as anything more than a parlor trick. And if you wanted to bring a dead "Avenger" woman back, Yellowjacket has actual story potential. Masque only could have Tony being tilted by how absurd it is to bring a copy that was turned to ash in the wilderness back, and suggest something more reasonable like a rogue LMD or literally any other shapeshifter instead, and then she dies again. Or wearing a mask over a mask.

Call me a fucking retard so it goes away please.

You’re a fucking retard for caring this much about a current year comics plot in the first place

This is probably an insane fan-theory as there isn't much chance of an Iron Man run in 2026 bringing back a character who's been dead for over 20 years and only appeared in a few stories, but the mention of that version of Masque and of Joseph from X-Men does remind me what an utterly dick move it is by a writer to bring back a character from a previous writer's run, retcon them with "lol they're just a clone" and then kill them off because it's just a clone so who cares? It's inherently worse than any of their original stories because it's just petty hackwork, and it's treating a new character from a previous run not like a character, but just as a dangling plot thread where they think a dismissive resolution like that is in any way satisfactory.

The same is true for characters who got invalidated with an "he or she never really existed, it was just an alien shapechanger all along". Editors shouldn't allow this crap. As big 2 cape comics are basically like an ongoing relay, writers should be forced to have a bare minimum level of respect for their predecessors that they shouldn't be allowed to completely invalidate characters like this.

Nick Spencer did it in Spider-Man and everyone hated it because they didn't know it happened.

It's ass every time anyone does it. The characters might be worth some royalty money to the creators, and they're the company's intellectual property that might one day have value, just allowing writers to completely invalidate a character is worse than killing them. Superheroes and supervillains can come back from death, you can't come back from being written out of being real in the first place.

If you don't like a character, just ignore them. Don't destroy them like this.
