Plot wise they weren’t relevant, you only needed Pete and pj to be foils to max and goofy. Lore wise I lean towards the idea that they got divorced.

I love Peg more than is healthy, but they really would have been a narrative distraction from the Father-Son themes that dominate the movie.

Off doing their own thing. When Pete decided to take PJ out on a Father/Son trip, Peg decided to do the same with Pistol. It was a pretty zany Big City Adventure, shame you missed it.

I can agree with this in the 1st movie, but the 2nd movie yeah I think the divorce likely was the case since obviously Peg not around to see her son go off to college along with the fact Pete's attitude being so giddy to have the place all to himself like in having no more of any kind of responsibility to anyone.
