It was a poetic way of showing that he still had family, even if it wasn't his parents. The dynamic doesn't really work if any if they aren't at least the same age. Whether that be a kid or 18, it feels changing that dynamic really eclipses Billy as a superhero if there is another who is older/wiser/better then him at everything anyways.
