Is this one of those films that's around a 6-7 out of 10?
>>

It's serviceable, the drama behind it is stupid.
>>
It's 7/10.
I think people just found out Miyamoto always intended this movie to be fast-paced on purpose. He even hinted about it in the direct. Let's just hope this doesn't extend to the other franchises though.
>>
I see most people rate in the 4-6/10 range. Just an average movie for kids.
I think the reason people online are more harsh with it compared to the first is because it was more of the same and some were hoping for a bit more substance, especially with Super Mario Galaxy being as beloved of a game as it is.

I'd definitely rate it no higher than a 5, myself.
Too much happens in its runtime and many characters - Rosalina, Wart and his goons, fucking Mario - are shafted.
>>
>>153149715
It isn’t a movie. Just a slideshow of references

I'm guessing nobody's ever heard of the 6-7 thing that's all the rage nowadays?

I still remember one of the Mario games took about 6-7 hours for me to beat.

A perfect score means nothing anymore.

If you're using a scale where 5 is "the plot gets resolved by the end of the film" then yeah, 6 is probably where this would sit mainly because it's being carried by the graphics and references

If you care, at all, about any of the other stuff (plot, characterization, pathos, cinematography, whatever) this has none of that except for like two lines of Mario telling Bowser maybe he isn't so bad

It also really, really, really looks like they rebooted the movie away from Mario Odyssey at some point before it was announced judging by how many of the assets are from that game and not Galaxy

Yes. At the very least it doesn’t fall flat on its face trying for dramatic character arcs or hamfisted allegories for real life problems. It’s super mario.
The acting is serviceable, the script isn’t overly juvenile and the characters have good chemistry. The animation and storyboarding is very good. There’s plenty other stuff to criticize, but i can actually watch the whole thing. Unlike Raya and the Last Dragon, which I turned off after 15 minutes yet somehow sits at 93% on RT

I'd just put a 5/10, it's technically ok but just shallow and hyperactive. I still don't like how Illumination appropriated the designs too, the eyes are really off to me.

It will. Mario Movie is the blueprint. Their most high-profile franchise that can test out any risks and still come out profitable.

>"super mario galaxy" movie
>Galaxy is maybe 10% of the movie, the rest is Odyssey and other games

6-7 is incredibly generous.

You're better off just playing games with the kids. You'd probably get more out of it if you did.

No. Hoppers is a 6 or 7 out of 10. That score indicates base competence in all areas but nothing standout.

Mario Galaxy is a 2 or 3 out of ten. It has no script. The pacing is absurd. The characters are cardboard cut outs. It sucks.
>>
>people saying 4-5 out of ten
No. That's something like GOAT that clearly tried but didn't make the mark.
The Mario Galaxy movie doesn't even pretend to have story beats or character arcs or pathos of any kind. It's flashing lights. Jangling keys.

It's useful, when watching a scene in a movie you're analyzing, to think in terms of what it accomplished in the overall structure of the movie.
That isn't to say that every scene must move the plot forward (though that is part of writing a -tight- script), but that every scene should serve a purpose. Maybe it provides characterization that will be needed later, or provides a break in the action so the audience isn't overwhelmed, or plays into specific themes or character arcs. If a scene can be cut from your movie without any impact on the rest of the edit then that scene should be scrapped or entirely reworked.

I say all this because nearly every scene in the Mario Galaxy movie could be scrapped and it would be the exact same movie. You could literally just have the start with Rosalina's capture, everyone goes to rescue her, final scenes, it would be the same fucking movie but 20 minutes long.

Reviewers aren't being hyperbolic when they call this an anti-movie. The previous Mario film at least pretended to have story beats and a character arc; it fucked up the paint by numbers but you could still recognize the form of the picture. This movie has none of that to the point that people might rightly compare it to clip shows.

The closest it gets to any kind of actual writing is Peach wanting to find her Sister and discover her origins, which takes up approximately 35 seconds of runtime and has no impact on her character whatsoever.

6.5 to 7 out of 10.

The first one had a basic workable story. Galaxy is like a string unwashed analbeads. Just going through references after references.

It is, but there's something to be said about how much visuals and fanservice can save a movie that's a disorganized mess of a story with barely any chracter arcs. I think a 6 is fair to this movie and a 7 is actually being fairly generous, but my personal enjoyment of it was a 9 and I can't wait to go see it again because the movie is, for better or worse, and example of "just pack it full of cool stuff" actually working. It may be a mid movie but it's a highly entertaining one with lots of moments that I want to go back and see again.

I think of it like a salad-- a salad is also a mess but lots of people love salads.
