I could see this being a setup if the idea that they are making a movie is true. Maybe it sets up the Smiling Friends business losing too many customers and failing and then the movie is the follow up to that.

Swap characters. Artstyle change. Plot change. Kill off mr. boss in a season finale for fun. Make a full season of glep as conan the barbarian where his girlfriend is an amazon warrior and charlie, pym, allen just don't appear except as maybe background characters. Make a 3-episode arc where allen decides he wants to be a nasa astronaut and it ends with him making the moon smile only for him to be petrified and go back to the smiling friends. It doesn't matter what you do, it's your show, why not just... ride the gravy train. Idk. That's what I'd do. I'm not mad like some other people are, but I just don't understand the decision.
