Mordecai could very easily be turned in to a classic Japanese protagonist, especially with his useless romantic pining. Rigby would also make the transition well as a pervert comedy relief character.
I also feel like a more serious story like Beastars would be able to more effectively portray the parasitic dynamic Mordecai and Rigby have, where Rigby is constantly dragging Mordecai down and keeping him at his level, keeping them as no good slackers and stymieing whatever potential Mordecai has
