Does Jason Todd's death even matter? Why keep it around if continuity can just be changed and writers are cycled in and out?
>>153171388>Does Jason Todd's death even matter? The answer is NO
>>153171388I'd venture that it matters even MORE now that he's Red Hood. Jason believes Batman’s refusal to kill criminals is what led to his death. Red Hood isn’t just another vigilante, he’s a direct ideological challenge to Batman. He's a "failed son" of Batman.
>>153171388None of it matters. How people are still invested is baffling to me.
It almost did in HUSH
>>153171388>>153171634Adding mutliverse/divergent timeline faggotry to any story will automatically make it arbitrary and pointless. This shit is the main reason capeshit will always be terrible pointless baby shit for babies.
Indeed. DCAU knew what they were doing skipping over Todd
Hey, what was Jason Todd like pre crisis?
>>153171724>Adding mutliverse/divergent timeline faggotry to any story will automatically make it arbitrary and pointless. Not if that's the point or if it's done for fun.
>>153172197He was basically a copy of Dick Grayson, down to pretty much the same origin with the circus. Jason didn’t bring anything new, it’s only after DC made him more flawed and distinct Post Crisis that he became memorable.
Red Hood is such a messy topic to bring up because it's the writers desperately trying to justify Batman letting Citizens die to criminals in the hundreds. >"No no! Jason doesn't have a point because he's CRAZZZY!"
>>153172376AND THEN THEY KILLED HIM.
>Dick is the one that gets killed, revived, and villainized>Jason is the one that allows Batman to heal, before growing up and becoming Nightwing and/or joining Teen Titans>other Robins? lolnoThis is how it should have been.
>>153174983Jason was a little shit stealing tires off the Batmobile. If Jason is the one that heals Batman you erase what makes him unique. He just becomes Dick 2.0. If Dick dies and becomes a villain and Jason turns out fine Batman’s arc becomes less complex and less tragic. And can you really picture Jason being a team leader for the Titans?
>>153174983Too Star Wars.
>>153171634/thread
>>153171388>>153171516he was important thematically for ~18 years in a Gwen Stacy kind of way. He was an eternal reminder that Bruce makes mistakes and not everybody has the mentality to fight crime. The real pity is it made Steph suffer due to shitty writers and Didio despite her being an intentional Jason parallel but with a supposed to be good ending. Good thing she was popular, but really none of this matters I guess. All the lore shit short of the waynes being killed is just one shit writer and asleep editorial away from being pissed on
>>153171388He's not dead and he's not bitchy about having been dead, so the main consequence is just Tim.
>>153172152Tim in the DCAU was more Jason than anything Tim. He's basically pre-Starlin Jason.>>153172376The edginess didn't start overnight with Post-Crisis though.only Starlin really pushed thatIf you really want to know what Max Allan Collins ws goign for wit ost-Crisis Jason, watch the 91 Dick Tracy movie(I'd say read the strips but I know most of /co/ isn't going to track down and read 90 year old comic strips and most of you would call it "mid" or "dated" anyway). Collins Jason was just Dick Tracy Jr. Collins was also the Dick Tracy writer who followed up the original creator and apprenticed for him, so I wonder if he was riffing on how Batman took so much from Dick Tracy already, he decided to just go in on Robin being based off Junior. The worst thing he did was smoke cigarettes. He was scared about being made into a criminal. He was an orphan with a heart of gold. A few other writers gave him a little meanstreak or made him cocky before Starlin, but no worse than Dick was
>>153174983No Sean, Batman getting a Robin after the first dies is fucking stupid. Jason works only because he was Batman filling a gap Dick left.
>>153171388Comic book deaths haven't mattered for a while, even the "sacred cows"
>>153177799>female character>ever getting fucked over
You now remember all the Not!Batman's who are on their fiftieth boy wonder
I don’t think he needs to die. He just needs to be traumatised enough to drop the hard ‘no kill’ rule that Batman adheres to. He wasn’t killed in Arkham knight and Tim is basically Jason on DCAU and he ended up killing the joker in that one. The real problematic robin is Tim. The dude is pointless. He’s that Dick but faggier. Imho the bat family should just be:Nightwing who has his own city to protect and helps Batman occasionallyRed hood who has his own city to protect using his own ruthless philosophy and occasionally crosses paths with the other bat family membersDamien as the second attempt at fixing a flawed robinBarbara as the only batgirl. And terry as Batman’s successor
>>153171388I dont think Gwen Stacy's death even matters anymore people would rather a character be known as an empty marketable shell than a stepping stone in a story for a white male character.
>>153171388>Does Jason Todd's death even matter? >Why keep it around if continuity can just be changed and writers are cycled in and out?that can be said about literally anything in comics
>>153171634this is why people are reading manga instead
They have to keep it because at this point Jason is quite literally nothing without his death and his revival, everything he does and everything WB/DC does with him all relates back to it>well just get rid of the character all togetherAgreed, but Jason is too popular for DC to do that
>>153171634This.>>153172197Faggots will tell you he was Dick 2.0 because all they know is his orgine story. But he was the campiest Robin you can think of and wouldn't had been out of place in the Adam West show. A parody of what people think Dick was like in the early days when Dick was cocksure and didn't had much focus or characterization going on for him by virtue of being a redaer self-insert from the 40s.
>>153171388It's part of the Jason Todd™/Red Hood® brand identity, which is the only thing WB/DC cares about.
>>153171618Funny thing is, Winnick’s original take on Red Hood doesn’t even really believe in his own harshness. He flat out says he understands that Penguin or Scarecrow aren’t bad enough to execute. He just wants Batman to kill the Joker and probably criminals who hurt kids in general. Batman could still avoid killing g most criminals and just take a few behind the shed and Jason would’ve jumped to come back to him. We’ve never had a truly relentless, punisher level Red Hood
