deadpool is just unfunny.writers rely way too much on the fourth wall breaking and pop culture references
>>153178183Spider-Man is killing him lol.
There probably have been more unfunny Spider-Man depictions because Spider-Man is everywhere.
>>153178262at this point yea
He isn't always written like that
>>153178344when has he not been written like that besides Joe Kelly
>>153178183deadpool is more fun when he's a dick and the name "MERC with a mouth" actually applies
Ppl took good writing for granted and gave ppl like Robert Kirkman and Joss Whedon who are complete hacks, a pass.
>>153178593I loved how pissed Jackman gets interacting with him in dp3

>>153178183i remember once upon a time when people refer to deadpool as "4chan if he's a superhero".
>>153178522When he debuted in the 90s, long before millennial humor took over
>>153182807yea wasn't that joe Kelly? I already mentioned him
>>153182785>>153182807>>153183436Deadpool and Harley Quinn share a core problem these days. They're anti-heroes who are no longer allowed to be true anti-heroes because they've sold well to the point that the publisher wants to shove them into as many titles and events alongside major heroes as possible.Anti-heroes aren't just "hero but more brutal and violent". At the core of the anti-hero is a sense of selfishness and disagreeable traits that keep you from truly calling them a hero. Most heroes in old Westerns killed, but the Man With No Name introduced us to an abandonment of "doing it to protect the innocent" in favor of a sleazy professional whose conscience has to kick in as the movie goes on and who causes his fair share of chaos. Even when he saves the day, he does so in his own self-interest and certainly can't be called morally upright. He is ultimately the hero of his own story. In Deadpool's case, the moment he became an Avenger. Gone is the mercenary who works for hire who partakes in his own personal stories, no longer can he do anything that would truly keep him off of an Avengers title. While he always had the pop culture references and what have you, the other half of his humor was cartoonish sociopathy and unpredictability. Part of his character was trying to be a good person while not really knowing how in his poor mental health. This, in turn, cut a wing from the plane because, for both Harley and Deadpool, "finding redemption" is supposed to be the END of their respective stories. You even notice in adaptations, they barely use the fully "redeemed" version of either character. Because these versions ONLY exist for crossover potential
>>153183944>They're anti-heroes who are no longer allowed to be true anti-heroesDONT FORGET PUNISHER
>>153183944(2/2)You can really see this in the first Deadpool movie. In the Joe Kelly era, it was made clear that Wade Wilson was some kind of scum. Blind Al was some kind of POW he took out of guilt. His friendship with Weasel amounted to Weasel as his whipping boy.The movie hinges on the premise that Wade can't view himself as a hero. Yet refuses to really show why on numerous occasions. You never get the sense that he's really done anything too horrible before becoming Deadpool and if anything, you just get the sense he was some kind of juvenile delinquent based on how he spares the stalker kid due to an empathy for troubled youths. There's an idea that he has a past but his arc has become more about accepting he's a good person deep down and embracing his loved ones rather than developing empathy and changing his values. This is the big sign of a false antihero. You never actually get to see the condemnable actions they've taken. But it goes further. A core of his ethos has always been a degree of severe mental health struggle. And I'll willingly admit that depression has always been part of it. But the further you go back, the more it seems to be a manic depression/bi-polar disorder or cyclothymia. Borderline personality disorder. Even a large degree of psychosis and repressed/false memories brought on by the traumas the comic refused to show. This putting Wade into a position where he has trouble doing the right thing or even functioning in regular society. However as you go on, the more that regular depression is emphasized and the more victim overrides guilt. The Kelly era was much more adamant on the idea that Wade was never a particularly good person.Again, this is to make him more agreeable to cross him over onto Avengers and X-teams.
>>153184082(3/?)Ironically, cop controversy thing partially saved his character when you look at how the Netflix show was trying to handle him.The real problem is now it's always about having characters all verbally BTFO Frank and his toxic ideology rather than simply letting that ideology play out naturally alongside the consequences of it.One thing I will always appreciate about Jonah Hex is the fact he's in the past just let him be as anti-heroic as possible to the bitter end. He fucks up as a friend, lover, and father. He openly acknowledges that his existence is little more than punishment and that he can't wait for the day when society looks to men better than himself. He even sees the negative effects of people treating him as a role model firsthand. You can see he does have values but they're forged by trauma and operate in a barbaric grey. Not to mention, while most anti-heroes in comics get "tamed" by parenthood, he was allowed to be broken enough to think leaving his wife and kid were best for them. When he finds love with a woman whose more on his level, it ends tragically when their baby is murdered as pure collateral because of guys out for revenge on both of them.Frankly, I know there's people bitching about DC sidelining him now because of the problematic associated tropes, but I kinda feel like that's what's best for his character. He has a beginning, middle, and end. And that's more than most DC or MARVEL characters will ever get
>>153184274(4)Now to be clear, anti-heroes aren't inherently edgy.Shrek, for instance, classifies as an anti-hero because he's selfish. He wants his swamp, he wants his family. In any given situation he typically prefers to dodge responsibility or heroics unless these two things are involved. Saving the day is a byproduct of wanting these things. In many regards, a lot of Booster Gold can be considered anti-heroic. He wants recognition. A lot of Ditko's characters fall under this umbrella too.The true advantage of the anti-hero is they're more like us. Most of us may donate to charity but not the majority of our money. We pick jobs based on personal passions and financial gains. And we have our own flaws and some our mental conditions. The hero's journey involves saving the day, the anti-hero's journey is typically a more personal story or covers a more wide array of what they can partake in.You have characters like Deathstroke to prove this. Because yes, a villain protagonist in his solo runs qualifies him as the "anti-hero" of those stories. Which shows just how far the concept goes. This is where Deadpool and Harley actually went wrong. Go back to their early anti-hero days and it's "a day in the life", they want to make peace with their own consciences, Deadpool wants to do his job, Harley wants to live her life. Both come from lives that make this impossible. You can see this in adaptation a lot with Harley because writers seem to actively prefer when she's still ultimately at odds with the heroes even after she left Joker. And even her solos often ignore crossover potential to bring her back to thatWith Deadpool, it also seems to be a common thing to keep him an outright nuisance for the heroes in animated versions.I'm paying attention to where they take Peacemaker now for this reason. Because he could be an easy one for them to "de-antihero" similar to how they did Deadpool and Harley
deadpool is cool (sometimes)
Cable and Deadpool is better than anything Spider-man related however
>>153178183Agreed but so is spider manWriters cant write a good joke
>>153178183MAKE DEATH'S HEAD AND AMBUSH BUG GREAT AGAIN
>>153184274I fucking loath the day they put Punisher skulls on those cop cars. After a week they took them down, but the damage was done. Now I get questioned by male feminist pussies and they/them cunts if I read the comics or not. Bitch, I was reading comics back when doing so in public got your ass beat. Anyone see that Bride movie? In it, women start putting black makeup on their faces and killing me. Because of the titular character. I am sure if Punisher was a woman, college girls would wear the skull instead of those pussy hats.
>>153186554The funny thing is Punisher actually hates that shit.
