Why did it never get a cartoon?

It did. It just never haired. There's a whole Micronauts cartoon from the 2010s that Hasbro got cold feet on.

Mego went bankrupt in 1982.

The whole 52 episode run is on youtube. Problem is that it had nothing to do with the Marvel series and between Marvel, Hasbro, the original Japanese toy companies and the owners of the anime/manga characters they were made from? The legal rights are a fucking mess to navigate. I'm still a bit shocked that Marvel was able to print the Micronauts and Rom Omnibus (rumor over at /toy/ was that Marvel wanted to print the Omnibus's and the Marvel Legends team really really wanted to make a Rom figure and a few others if possible which began the deal). James Gunn even wanted to use Bug in his GOTG movies but legal shot it down.

Basically Hasbro owns the name Micronauts but not much else.

That makes sense. It's too bad the rights to so many of these toys are so murky. Seems like only the stuff originally owned by Hasbro is still really useable
