I know /v/ is the second biggest melting pot next to /b/ but fucking hell I've never seen more retarded opinions on what many would consider a 5/10 movie.

>complain that the movie barely takes anything from the game besides the most surface level iconography?
"It's an ADAPTATION you fucking Nintoddler. Not everything has to be 1-to-1!"

>Complain that the movie's pacing is too fast and leaves no room for character to stand out or be interesting
"It's a KIDS MOVIE, retard. Not everything has to be deep!!"

>Complain that the story is nothing be a sequence of "and this happened! Then that happened," like the movie is following a strict outline that makes it feel even more like a thinly-veiled advertisement
"It's based on a MARIO GAME! Mario games are shallow and barely have a story!"

Like, fuck man. I know no one was expecting Love Death & Robots tier writing but seeing an absolute joyless board like /v/ defend this movie to the death is fucking bewildering.

Anons like you are why I made this thread in the first place. I don't want a Mario movie with Focus, M-tier writing. Just give me a basic adventure movie that doesn't feel like it's only exist to sell me toys and I wouldn't be bitching. Fucking Transformers One did this and everyone loved it.
>>
>>153187800
But instead of bitching about how shit the film is to you, why not give some ideas as to what it needs to do to be better.
What, do you want a twenty minute segment of Mario and Rosalina discussing their childhoods. What do you want?
>>
At first I was mad that there was no Luigi character arc, but the reveal of Daisy in the post-credits makes happy that the third film will have to have Luigi growth.

For one, it would be cool if we got so see more location from the Galaxy games instead of Odyssey. It doesn't even have to be the fan-favorite Gusty Garden; We could have Space Junk, Battle Rock, Bouy Base, Mattter Splatter, Space Storm. Hell, it would've been cool to have the gang ride around on Plant Mario instead of hitching a ride with Star Fox (even though I do like the crossover)

We could have Rosalina and Peach swap places so we could lean more about he character instead of her being the most "save the princess" plot device I've seen in a long time in movies.
>do you want a twenty minute segment of Mario and Rosalina discussing their childhoods
Make it 4 or 5. Get the Lumas involved too. It doesn't have to be like the story book in-game but at least something giving more depth to her being a cosmic mother to the Lumas.

I honestly would be fine if the breakneck pacing and Peach still being a girlboss if the movie felt more like GALAXY movie instead of shoving a lot of things that weren't in the Galaxy game. It really does feel like Nintendo and Illumination are suffering from MCU-syndrom with how they're handing these films, trying to build to an epic crossover even instead of making a good standalone film.
>>

The 90s Mario movie with Bob Hoskins is still the best one and this is a reminder to anyone that says otherwise needs to reup their ADHD meds.
>>
>>153187726
I'd hire proper voice actors and not celebrities.
After that, I would not turn Bowser into some therapy addict that does a 180° right away and then killed him, since I think he should be a recurring villain for a long franchise.
I would not have added even more girls, holy crap, but instead used the already very shallow base established in the first movie and build on top of it. Adding more girl bosses really stretches the cast too thin (more characters -> less individual screen time), while also raising the bar (who is going to be a threat when Peach now had cosmic power to blow up planets?)
So movie wise, I would have done maybe a donkey Kong movie instead with a proper voice actor and not that cringe Jew obsessed with gore porn, and had Mario and Peach be background supporting characters, then build up from there while passing the baton for who is the main character and who the story revolves around. Could have some 5 movies franchise there.

Anon I hear you. I saw it tonight and still thought it was a 6 or 7/10 but it needed to either drop one of the 4 subplots or be a two-part film because it was all sooo fast. There were genuinely great parts though, like the best beats Illumination has ever come up with but they needed better writing to punch them up and make them feel more natural and weave into each other. I feel like 1 more rewrite could have fixed it. Still kind of interested to see what they would do for a third one. I enjoyed myself even if it could've been much better. The Peach and Mario stuff was really well done though and I liked Yoshi. The Nintendo fans acting like it's perfect are as bad as the critics saying it's a 1/5 star movie. It's nowhere near those extremes.

Why are we rushing to Mario Galaxy after Mario 1? Is there going to be anything left for a third movie? Like I find the idea of Mario LORE honestly pretty laughable but we're just kind of burning through games pretty fast here. Surely Super Mario WORLD would have been a sufficient step up

The 1993 film blows it out of the water and actually captures the essence of the Mario series better (although they save Daisy for whatever reason)

Unironically I think Tom and Don from FlashGitz were spot on with how to fix the movie.
https://youtu.be/LPN72o38XyQ
Letting the movie be about learning to trust, like Mario and Yoshi learning to trust each other, or Mario learning to forgive Bowser or Bowser fearing that his kid is going to grow up wrong would have made the movie actually work instead of being a bunch of vaguely connected scenes.
In a way you could argue that this movie had a similar structure to the middling plot of a standard Mario game, where you're going and briefly visiting vastly different worlds with whacky themes that really don't have much connection to the greater plot other than being in the way of the end, but that's not how we write stories, and only really works for a video game.
Beyond that most of the areas they visited didn't have much going on in them anyway. Which is probably why, after visiting them, the resolution was pretty much, "nothing is accomplished, we're going somewhere else now," the most you could say was accomplished along the way was Mario finds a way into space, toad gets coins back, they hire Fox. Beyond that everything until the end doesn't move the story and the characters learn nothing. The dinosaur planet could have been skipped and nothing would change.

It seems to be populated by people that think the way to look smart and informed is to sperg the fuck out, screech at someone for saying something and calling them retarded...but without actually making a counter point, example, or really making an argument in any way. Just call everyone retarded a lot, and somehow this makes one look super dooper extra smart.

How does one discuss anything on /v/ at all?
From what I have seen /v/ only ever wants to bitch and moan about DEI or political messaging shit that happened in 2013 forever and ever and ever. Each topic better be closely connected to something woke that happened in 2013 or else fuck off.

Look, anon, the reason anyone that cares about movies is shitting on it isn't because it's a kids movie. It's because it breaks the most basic and fundamental rules of storytelling. It is an incompetent story.

Let's even give it every advantage in the world. Let's pretend that a story doesn't really need character arcs or themes or controlling ideas.
At the most fundamental level a story has to be a cohesive whole and not a set of disconnected sketches. That is what makes a sequence of scenes a story. One scene is connected to another by the phrase "and so as a result:"
Nearly every scene in this movie is "connected" to the next instead by the phrase "and then:"
That is not a story.
The Mario Galaxy movie is not a story.
That is the problem.

>I want to hear your grand ideas for a serious and mature Mario movie
Not OP, but a person can identify and say something is wrong or bad without having the skill to do better themselves. You yourself probably do that, by criticizing the art on this or that comic/movie/show, or the writing, or the music... you can criticize a doctor for prescribing the wrong medication to a patient even though you yourself don't have the same medical knowledge as he does, or say that a football player is playing like ass even if you aren't as athletic as he is, etc. None of it invalidates your criticism if the thing you are criticizing is indeed factually wrong or bad.
>>
The only thing that you can defend is the nostalgia factor. Its a horrible "movie".

I don't think the 1993 film is very Mario but I think it was incredible for props, set design and imagination.
The acting itself was good.
The follow up comic was terrible but that's because you can't really go anywhere with the setting they created.

These look terribly uncanny. Why not just make his eyes simple/cartoony and completely black, like in the games?

Matter of fact, all of the game designs are 100% more appealing than the movie ones.

You have to remember there was even less Mario content to draw upon at the time of release. True King Koopa is a human, but only the Dark Crystal guy could have made a convincing puppet for him.
I love the duo of actors they chose for Mario and Luigi too. Bob is a FANTASTIC Mario and John is a charming Luigi.
The set is a lot of fun too, it feels like a real world bustling with life. I'll be honest,I didn't finish the OP's film but what little I saw it felt more like an amusement park ride without substance.
>>
>>153203343
I wonder how they're going to bring Mr. Game and Watch back.
>>
>>153195167
I would've condensed the subplots to avoid the story being complicated and amplified the themes of family between Bowser/Jr, and Peach/Rosalina. It's obvious that's where the heart of the film was and it wasn't gravitated too. The parts where Bowser and Peach go through their own struggles made for a top tier film and if they would've toned down the action scenes and removed that retarded 5 minute baby scene it probably could've been great. I would've also kept Star Fox but brought him in WAY earlier so he could actually have an arc. I also think Mario and Luigi should have had some conflict that tied into the the other stories with Bowser and Peach as well. Something, anything at all.

Bowser's character arc:
>I'M GONNA FUCKING KILL YOU, MARIO!
>Thank you, Mario, for restoring me to my former glory. Now go!
>No, Jr. Don't kill them.
>I'M GONNA FUCKING KILL YOU, MARIO!
Honestly I rather it be this way since in the first he had no problem killing a bunch of prisoners, almost burning Peach, and beating the shit out of Mario. So him realizing how soft he becomes, I prefer him feeling like a fool and doubling down on how evil he really is. I really thought there was going to be a moment where Bowser has to stop Jr from doing something real drastic, like blow up the Mushroom Kingdom realizing he can't then rule over. I wonder if we're ever going to see him as Bowser again, or will he stay locked up as Dry Bowser to make room for a different villain. Probably the perfect time to introduce the 1up mushroom.
