/co/ is a dwarf board. Leaf eaters and orcs need not apply.
>>
Are goblins orcs?
>>
>>153195786
In Tolkien's lore yes. Goblins are the original orcs. Most other media no, goblins are not orcs. Hobgoblins are closer to orcs.
>>
>>153195786
not usually

All modern depictions of dwarves are based off Tolkien's dwarves, who he based them off Jewish history and culture.

Why are there no /co/ shows about Dwarves? Too male and "unwoke"? Fantasy shows have only become more popular, not that they were ever particularly unpopular, with shit like Dragon Prince or those various D&D shows like Vox Machina and Mighty Nein. Why can't we have that but focusing on the whimsical antics of drunken dwarves instead of "gay purple not-elves whine about melodrama for 2 seasons and then the show gets cancelled"?
>>
>>153195872
No we're most definitely not.
>>

All 3 of those shows are pretty recent tho.

Dwarves are basically "what if they WEREN'T evil though"
>>
>>153195786
Orcs weren't made from goblins, they were made from humans, because goblins would have been not nearly ferocious enough.
>>
>>153195720
Trudvang dwarfs are the coolest shit, I love that setting.
>>
>>153198658
In Tolkien's setting, goblins were just small orcs. Uruk Hai were created with elves and entwives though this was never fully established as canon. Half-orcs then came from Uruk Hai and humans. At least that is how I remember it. I very well could be wrong, it's been a minute since I've read the books.

Tolkien Dwarfs are based off Norse mythology like the Elves. Dig for your racism in a different mine.

>>153199145
No they are not the same thing. Gnomes are smaller and are way more fey. They do look similar in some ways. Dwarves have blunt and rough features where gnomes are more wizened and almost feral looking, fox or weasel-like.

Yeah, I think that'd work really well; it really is surprising there's not any that comes to mind. It'd have the potential to be both comedic and awesome with the adventure and all.

>>153199903
They're not tho. Dwarves are usually hand "made" by a deity. Halfers are usually some offshoot of humanity and gnomes are fey through and through. None of them can produce offspring with each other unless it's through author fiat or whatever.

Are they really just the same thing and trolls are the dirty Alabama fucks of the dwarf world that won't bathe or clean up?
>>
>>153195868
When did all dwarves become Scottish? If anything I would have thought they would all be Bergen Jergen Reeky Deeky Swedes.
>>
>>153201389
Warhammer Dwarfs are Yorkshiremen
John Rhys-Davies is Welsh and played Gimli with that accent.
Americans just can't tell the difference, so they just think they are Scottish,

>>
>>153195917
Going back, fantasy shows are actually really rare. Japan churns them the fuck out but they happen only like once a decade in the US. Half the time the creators want to be weird and different and refuse to ever have a single elf or dwarf appear once like the DnD cartoon.

Half the novelty of the Zelda cartoon was the fact that it was the only fantasy cartoon in existence for a fairly long period of time. 15 years or so, except maybe until people started dubbing Slayers in the late 90s.

Idk. Dwarves can be pretty unapproachable. Gnomes might treat with you over gem cutting. Dwarves won't because in their mind, they are already perfect. Just my 2¢
>>
>>153199145
>>153201221
If you want to get mythical about it,
>Dwarves are a kind of cherished elevated dead who live underground in their burial mounds and hold the wisdom of ancient times/peoples as well as guard burial hoards of weapons and gold
>Gnomes are elemental spirits of nature, unrelated to humans or ghosts. They are more like a tiny personified aspect of nature like most fairy types of creatures.

>>153201373
They do both turn to stone in sunlight. So there is a good chance pre christian dwarf folklore mutated into later troll folklore. Especially in Christian times when any kind of spirit creature had to be evil and opposed to the church. They needed to be evil dirty things that are dangerous to meet.

Trow used to mean troll, iirc and trow and dwarf were kinda used interchangeably but they're pretty much considered separate peoples now. Dwarves are civilized and trolls will eat you without hesitation, man, woman or child. They dgaf.
>>
>>153201430
Excuse you but I can definitely tell the difference. Maybe being of Northern European descent helps, idk.
>>
>>153201373
Kinda
Dwarfs are the wise elders and craftsmen
Trolls are the feral cannibal monsters

Both turn to stone when the sun touches them. Both can be described as huge (dwarfs were not inherently short until later) with big noses and scraggly beards.
The bigger difference in the old dwarfs is that they were described as white and pale as a dead body since they never saw the sun.

I think you're right about elves in the d&d cartoon but I'm pretty sure they depicted dwarves at least once. That's strange about the elves tho. They had some pretty tight restrictions about that show, satanic panic and all that, but elves in the d&d world are pretty innocuous. Hell, they are almost all rigidly good aligned! To a fault

The really annoying thing about US made fantasy shows is how 90% of them were way more interested in being a subversion of the fantasy thing than an adaptation. It was way more common to see someone try to depict an elf as more goblin-ey looking, a dward might be a lizard, or it tries to make the standard classes into a joke and makes fun of DnD games.

>>153201682
We never did get an actual expectation, though. I'm not counting the d&d cartoon because it was so milquetoast. I still loved it as a really young child but it doesn't hold up well in any way.
>>
>>153201701
The expectation is The Lord of the Rings, which admittedly is setting the standard pretty high.
>>
>>153201449
>>153201627
Rankin Bass was pretty good for a minute there in the early 80s. Flight of Dragons was decent, as was Last Unicorn.

Thundar the Barbarian was a decent attempt even if they had to go overboard with the real world locations and futuristic stuff.

The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon really did not bother adapting much at all from the games.
That actually is a good point about the Zelda cartoon, it was the rare case of a standard sword and sorcery show of the time.

Pirates of Dark Water was also fun but another time when they wanted to make up all their own races and monsters, which seems to be the norm.

There is a lot of stuff that takes place in a fantasy setting while focusing on some totally different characters as a brand new stand-in for elves or dwarves like Smurfs, Gummy Bears, Little Wizards, or Ewoks.

It does seem like no one is willing to actually try and make a fantasy cartoon that is the standard thing with elves, dwarves, and wizards. They want to dance around the concept a lot and kind of toy with the setting some like Adventure Time or Magiswords. Even early stuff like He-Man did this.
>>
>>153201627
>>153201682
>>153201792
It surprises me that no one really tried this back in the early 00s when Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were the biggest name in cinema.

We kinda sorta got a half assed attempt with Ultimate Book of Spells. And that was another one of those little known European productions that came on at 6am for one year and was never heard of again.
>>
>>153201792
>Gummy Bears,
You know, if they just made that a show about a dwarf or gnome family getting along in a medieval world then it would probably be remembered as one of the greatest fantasy adaptations made.

But Disney had to be Disney and make them into talking animals.
>>
>>153201819
They thought the secret sauce was YA book adaptations and they did do the Chronicles of Narnia and tried to do His Dark Materials at that time.
Why they thought HDM would attract the same audience as LotR really shows how little they understood the subject matter.
>>
>>153201819
The big push at the time was to make film series out of the big fantasy epics. That is why they made His Darkest Materials, Eragon, Percy Jackson, and Narnia movies. Attempts were made, just not for tv. The plan was to make lightning strike twice with HP and LOTR by making 5 film franchises out of another fantasy novel series. Largely drawing from the YA novel series.

The dwarves in this setting are pretty interesting:
>Dwarves are an ancient race, old to the land even before the coming of the elves. Their first encounter would prove near fatal, for they were almost driven to extinction by the war-like elves. Though their mountain holds were impossible to breach by force, the elves broke them through bribes and traitors.
>Now the royal lineages of the dwarves descend from those who sold out their kin for trinkets and gold and the memory of that betrayal has never faded. Yet though they were foul to the eyes of the elves, they were spared for none could rival them in the crafting of metals or in their knowledge of runes.
>Then came the Cursing and the world itself turned against them. The mountains heaved, the deep ways split and the ancient holds-once thought eternal-became tombs of stone and dust. Those who survived were forced to abandon them scattering into what remained. Now they are a dying race, their new holds no more glorious than badgers dens, clawed into the earth and few and far between.
>Yet they cling to life and their wares are no less sought after then before. Though they are a covetous and deceitful race, trade with them is still worth the risk and only the richest elven princes can afford a full panoply wrought by their hands.

the gnomes and halflings here seem to be the degenerated descendants of dwarves cut off from their people and forced to live amongst humanity after the elves genocided the dwarven kingdoms and chased the remnants underground
Oh and the elves here are really fucking cool

Bump.
>>
>>153204021
Unfortunately, that's nearly impossible if you want the end product to still be considered "fantasy".

>J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji. - Terry Pratchett

We would honestly have to completely redefine fantasy as a genre to get out from under one Oxford Don who wrote almost entirely as a hobby.

Maybe a good start would be looking into pre Tolkien fantasy, the Fairie Queene by Edmund Spenser is quite good.

This fellow right here. Three Hearts and Three Lions was one of the fantasy works that inspired Dungeons and Dragons. Hugi the dwarf, a main supporting character, had a scottish like accent. Inspiring such traits in dwarves in various dnd works/characters. Becoming the contemporary "voice" of dwarves. Tolkien's dwarves were not inspired by Jewish culture (other than the dubious stereotype of being greedy). However, supposedly Tolkien based the Dwarf language off of Hebrew--thick and guttural, but not ugly like the orcs' Black Speech of Mordor (based on Turkish).

To be a pedantic twat for a minute, “fantasy” might legitimately be one of the broadest genre terms possible. If you looked up AFI’s list of films nominated for best fantasy, amongst no brainers like LOTR or Conan, you also have:
>Babe
>Terry Gilliam’s Brazil
>I Married a Witch
>Pleasantville
>The Thief of Baghdad
>a number of superhero films (Batman, Superman and Spider-Man 2)

Even Star Wars is often just as much a fantasy story as it is science fiction.

As for why “sword and sorcery” fantasy is not played straight often, my guess is it’s a combination of the subgenre being too niche/nerdy, execs not wanting to do action shows unless the characters are very marketable, and creatives feeing like they can’t think of worlds that aren’t just Tolkien/DnD lite.

What is it that makes Dwarves so likable and Elves so insufferable?
>>
>>153204021
Majority of them don't do that. Almost any fantasy series is too much of a subversion or they are much more made up by the creator to be different for the sake of different. But overall more series avoid the general DnD-Tolkien style of fantasy than imitate it.

Adventure Time and Mighty Magiswords didn't follow the Tolkien/DnD setup at all. Arcane is entirely its own thing and floats more scifi.
Disenchantment seems to want to make fun of historical things more than fantasy tropes. And the elves/dwarves are not really Tolkien based at all
Dave the Barbarian also doesn't match up with the Tolkien framework.

I would say more anime series follow it closely, but most that I see are more based on imitating the mechanics of a video game than anything else. Trying to make it out to be a very generic cookie-cutter world is on purpose so the main character can claim how it resembles some MMO they played or that they know how to navigate the player menu only they can see.

>>153207957
These days the term Fantasy is genuinely accepted to be Tolkien-derived Medieval European setting with magic and dragons. If there is anything else then the title has to be altered to something like Cowboy Fantasy, Scifi Fantasy, Eastern Fantasy, Steampunk fantasy, Modern Fantasy, etc. If you do not add any more descriptors to it, the audience is made to assume it's Medieval western Europe with magic.

Elves are smug elitist assholes that have the favor of the gods, are perfect Mary-Sue immortal magical fucks that always live blessed perfect lives.

Dwarves are hard working, get down and dirty scrappy bros that are willing to get drunk with anyone that can keep up.

nta but Tolkien did use jews as an inspiration for his dwarves was because pop culture at the time had depicted dwarves as jew-like. Tolkien tried to rehabilitate that image.
I've heard it was a response to Wagner also using jews and jewish culture as an inspiration for dwarves in the The Ring of the Nibelung but I dont know how true that is.

There are sci-fi settings that use dwarfs quite extensively. 40k comes to mind.

Dwarves are real, so they are not limited to Tolkienesc fantasy. People just find it demeaning to include them in anything now, partially because certain Dwarven celebrities like Peter Dinklage demand roles outside of their culture.
At this point, the only way for the Dwarven culture to heal is for the dwarves to embrace their culture, growing out their beards, open carrying battle axes and working the mines. Only then can we truly embrace the Dwarven people's particular cultural niche in television and film.

That's one thing that a lot of people seem to forgot: D&D started out as a bunch of nerds kitbashing all their favorite fantasy and scifi books into one big setting so they could basically dick around in those worlds. The original Dungeon Masters Guide even cites sources so you can read what they read to get a better grasp of the concepts.

Incidentally, that's the problem with a lot of modern continuations of things. No-one in modern D&D in pulling concepts from new modern fantasy. Most Twilight Zone reboots fail because they aren't adapting short stories from masters in the field. New Trek is more obsessed about being Trek over writing good science fiction.

Both trolls and dwarfs are part of a the same group known as "underfolk/the undergrounders", essentially the humanoid creatures that lives in the earth/hills/mountains.
This group also includes elves.
While there's originally not much physical difference, besides trolls pretty much always being bigger than humans, their behavior would differentiate them.
Elves were guardian-like beings that could be either adversarial or friendly, like spirits protecting an area.
Dwarfs were cunning craftsmen, and while they could be great to seek out for advice or trade, they never parted with anything for free, and the price could often be steep. They're exclusively male, unlike the other groups.
Trolls as directly adversarial to humanity and great at using magic, mostly differentiated from jötnar by living in Midgard. Troll is still used as a prefix in Scandinavian languages, and usually indicates evil, magic, or both, with wizard literally being "Trollman" and magic being "Trollcraft".
It's not fully understood, but there's a lot that point to them all originally being part of an earlier "spirit" religion before Asatru took hold, since they're all associated with the ground and death, and often live in grave mounds.

Leagues of Votann/Squat on paper is a pretty good translation of fantasy dwarves into Sci-fi even if it shamelessly stole a lot of that from Deeprock Galactic. I hate how the biker gang aspects have been forgotten, its an excellent addition in my opinion.

Then again LoV and Deeprock Glaactic are the only examples of Dwarves in Sci-Fi that I know of. Maybe the Dwemer could be made to work in Sci-fi?
>>
>>153219277
Dwemer aren’t even Dwarves. Their elves. Which really shows how creative Bethesda is since all the races in TES can be boiled down to Human, Elf, or Animal People.
>>
>>153220258
For all intents and purposes the Dwemer are dwarves. I think it shows that dwarves dont need to be short and squat to work. You can have normal humans with a dwarvish culture and nothing would change

I have an oath to fulfil, so don't mind me if I'm greedy, but I need to kill lots of kruti braggarts to get my axe channelin' me runes. Well, I see you, scum, and by Valaya's cloak I'll have every last rotten one of you back in that ground, pushing up your tombstones!"

— Cloak of Valaya

>"At last, we have lured the Orcs to the place we Dawi fight best — in Grungni's realms! I see beside me brave Dwarfen hearts. Such courage will imbue my Rune Helm. This is a day to strike many grudges from the great book, for I am the White Dwarf, and only worthy folk appear in my pages... So, let us record great deeds this day, and give these urki scum a right royal hammerin'!"

While we're on the topic of fantasy comics, the comic tie in to D&D 4E (Fell's Five) is pretty fun. It has a little too much MCU-esque quippy bullshit but overall it's a very solid action-adventure comic and I'd recommend it.

>Dwarves as a race
Norse-Germanic. In the Hobbit they're essentially ripped straight out of the Sagas, being a mix of the dwarves of the Icelandic Sagas with their quest taken from the Nibelung. In LotR the Norse influence is further strengthened.
>Dwarven tongue
Hebrew, with the notable exception of the dwarf-names of the Hobbit, which are Norse and derive directly from the Dvergatal of the Icelandic poem Völuspá. The Hebrew is part for flavour and part because Tolkien was reserving Norse and Anglo-Saxon for the Northmen/Eóþeóð.
