I like the Mario movies more because the side characters get to do stuff.
Luigi was captured for 90% of the first film (which was still a disappointment), but in the last 5 minutes he's the one who goes super, saves Mario's ass from Bowser, then they curbstomp Bowser together and earns the movie the "Mario Bros" name. Cannot say the same for the Sonic films which have much fewer characters to juggle but still refuse to try and write the plot with them in mind.

The bottom row would write Mario and Luigi out of the plot by the second half of the movie’s runtime for an unfunny ass human’s Disney Channel sitcom B-plot

Fucking no character does or says anything meaningful in either of these characters. The writers trick you by writing shit like “no guys, Toad like really doesn’t like Yoshi lmao” but it never actually matters or has any stakes or any actual impact beyond just saying it. Luigi is “there” in the sequel but he just kinda…says stuff. They’re all props, not real characters, they’re all boring as shit.

The advantage of the Sonic Movie approach is means each character gets a LOT of focus.

Sonic 2 is THE Knuckles and Tails movie. Sonic 3 is THE Shadow movie.

The Mario movies have so many characters in them but they just all blend together into a mess.

We literally don't even know if he's an orphan, because the movie never bothered to do anything with him. He's just there for a cringy Bruno Mars danceoff and to get KOd twice so Sonic can do a le angwy face at Eggman

Not counting Maddie, and the fat black bitch they disguise as, and the unfunny Gay indian, and the unfunny fat neckbeard who apparently is the "guardian of the master emerald" now, and le Olive Garden the standin GUN Director, and Agent Stillwell who is just there for no reason they just wanted to force in ANOTHER.

Mario used its characters much better. Which isn't phenomenal but still everyone gets some focus.
Sonic's had more focused stories.
