April 13, 2016 the very first issue of The Unbelievable Gwenpool released. Let's take a look back at Unbelievable Gwenpool #1 and see if it holds up.
Gonna be like 5 minutes of posting variant covers.
>>153215433>Gwenpool came out on the day Homestuck endedIt's like pottery
And now on to the actual comic.
Enter Gurihiru.
I think this is the best Modok has ever looked.
RIP Cecil.
And that's the end of The Unbelievable Gwenpool #1. Have you ever read it before? Were you in the original storytime thread 10 years ago?
>>153216113No.
>>153216164I got about ten issues into the run. I didn't enjoy it. It's not good or funny.
>>153216164I was in horrible pain from homestucks godawful ending in addition to severe back pain that hurt every time I moved, and covered in bed bug bites.Gwen was the one good thing about that day
>>153216164It picks up later, but this is a decent hook to start.
>>153215449 >>153215433She’s so cute
Without the hood her Gurihiru design is very appealing, there's some fun fourth wall tricks and the NEET background is endearing enough, but all that felt like icing without a cake.
>>153215549This is how I prefer Gwen 'talking' to her audience, in that she really doesn't: she just narrates to herself in her head and assumes (hopes) someone is reading her thought boxes.>>153215618Ah, the early days when Gwen was at her most reckless/impulsive. Blindly firing/killing Cecil's relatives with civilians in the splash zone, and then expecting unanimous praise as 'the hero'>>153215634Boy meets girl. It's always kind of awkward knowing Gwen/Cecil's first meeting is her murdering his hillbilly crime family but then he doesn't seem too broken up over it. Makes a great early straight-man and tard-wrangler (as much as anyone can tard-wrangle Gwen)Also a trend here you'd see later with Vincent in Marvel civvies not having nearly as much fun with the Marvel life-style as Gwen thinks it is.>>153215751>Your Truman show thingKek, I actually had only seen the Truman Show between now and when I first read this.>>153215804Gwen/Ronnie's interactions are great. Early on she feels like the one looking out for Gwen the most, chastising her for screwing up jobs/her suit while Gwen's still treating it all as a game.>Big enabler, RonnieAlso kek>>153216051That bottom right panel has always stuck with me as an exemplary example of how batshit Gwen was early on. That gleeful, care-free grin on her face as she pushes a man (immoral as he may have been) to his death is kind of disturbing and I see why Teddy was so worried.>>153216141This is a great moment. Immediately sells one of the best parts of the comic in shattering Gwen's lofty expectations of what her super-hero life would be like. Especially considering how devil-may-care and cocky she was throughout her first issue, breaking Gwen's ego by killing her only friend (whom she treated more like an accessory, a sidekick to make her cooler) is equally tragic and a little karmic.
>>153217842>>153216164Thanks for the story-time, OP.I love Unbelievable and it was fun to re-read first issue again, it's a very strong book and the first issue does well in setting up the pieces of the story. It establishes Gwen as a lovable but self-indulgent protagonist, high on her own hype and showcases her at her most selfish/foolhardy to break her down and rebuild later. Some of her lines are a bit manic but I get a sense she's just excited and trying very hard to be 'cool' for her comic's sake. It sets up the running theme of the story of her expectations being wildly different from the reality: how people see a random, pantless girl shooting up a bank as a psycho and not a hero, how people in 616 aren't as enamored with living in it as Gwen is, and especially her perceptions about how important and untouchable she is when she's really no more significant than your average mook. The ending is sad but also a great hook for showing this adventure isn't going to go the way Gwen thinks it will, and serves in shattering her illusions of invincibility so she can actually grown/learn.
>>153215433>a character based on Heather Antos
>>153216164>Have you ever read it before?Yes but only after it had already completed its run, I got in late>Were you in the original storytime thread 10 years ago?I wish, what was it like?
>>153218454>I wish, what was it like?See for yourself.https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/81773003/#81773003
>>153218582>500+ postshot-damnAlso glad to see so many people enjoying it. Particularly the final pages but also noting people picking out details I've missedAlso like the interview shared at the bottom
Happy Birthday, Gwen!!!!
So in the last 10 years, Marvel could only make some sell Spider-Boy and Gwenpool...two legacy heros...
>>153219181Gwen was born in 1996 btwIf she hadn't stopped aging she'd be a 30 year old hag this year
>>153219367Speaking of Spider-Boy, it's funny how after he got some attention Marvel did another variant initiative like the Gwen Stacy one that Gwenpool came from. Instead of "What if Gwen Stacy was X hero" it was "what if X hero had a sidekick." Then they made those characters real and nobody cared, except for Maystorm and she didn't even join the regular universe, she joined Peach Momoko's Ultimate X-Men.
>>153215895>Daredevil: I'm told it looks goodevery tiem
>>153219367Luna Snow is from 2019.
>>153215549I like the idea of criminals being hyperaware od superheroes and freaked our by them.Have they ever made a good "Shitty crooks go up against Demi-God superhumans" comic?
>>153220716A team of D-Listers going up against someone way out of their weight class feels like Task Force X / Suicide Squad / Superior Foes of Spider-man, but if you mean like literal normal ass Average Joes I don't know if I can think of one
>>153216164Poor GwenShe fucked around and found out
>>153221435Suicide Squad gets a lot of wank desu
>>153223938>All of Gwen's fears about her friends fading from existence were realizedIt hurtsI just want to give Gwen her smile back bros
>>153223938turns out just because death is cheap in comics doesn't mean you can actually bring everyone backRIP Gwenpool
Does Gwen ever have night-terrors about this moment or does she sleep like a baby
>>153224648The guy was a mercenary working directly under M.O.D.O.K, he'd just slaughtered a ship full of aliens before Gwen pushed him in. Sure not everyone in the organization was bad (Sarah, Tony, Batroc to a degree) but you live by the sword you die by the woman-child pushing you into a reactor core
>>153216164>Were you in the original storytime thread 10 years ago?I'm almost 100% sure the original storytime threads are where a certain schizo came from because he was pissed Gwenpool wasn't Gwen Stacy. The person had the same Gwen obsession, the same ESL posting style and the same shtick of shitting up threads, arguing with himself and creating bait threads that he could argue with himself in because he thought it would annoy /co/ and get them to hate the book and character.Anyway, I think it's a great series with the only real negative being that it was forced to include a lot of stupid ANAD shit like Jane Thor or having Gwen obsessed with Miles and Kamala since that's the shit Marvel was pushing at the time. If you don't do it maybe I'll continue tomorrow as a daily doing an issue a day or something. It's a shame that out of the various bigger name 2000s webcomic creators Marvel brought in during the 2010s the only one they actually stuck with was North when he was the one that sucked.
>>153225194Batroc is really a double agent...he gives tips to global agencies if he work with terrorists.
>>153225523>include a lot of stupid ANAD shit like Jane ThorAll comics have to deal with what is happening currently and I think Unbelievable did a good job of that. Gwen obviously wasn't big on Thor because she struggled to even remember Jane's name, she only remembered Natalie Portman played her in the MCU. And playing with what was happening currently also led to the nice arc where she has to deal with good guy Dr. Doom at the end of the series.>or having Gwen obsessed with Miles and KamalaThis I actually have no problem with. Gwen was basically the target demographic for these characters. Ultimate Spider-Man was at it's peak when Gwen would have been growing up, so she would have been reading when Miles was introduced. Same with Kamala, Gwen would have been a high school girl when Ms. Marvel #1 released, and Kamala is still liked by a lot of people, even on /co/, despite Marvel fucking Kamala more than they ever did Gwen.Plus Gwen was introduced in the same era as them, and is the same age. Those are here peers and the characters she will be interacting with the most, so it made sense to have her meet and befriend them ahead of other characters.
>>153225523>>153225738I also don't mind the ANAD stuff in Gwenpool. It is definitely a product of its era but acting as a sort of time-capsule of Mid-To-Late 10's Marvel is novel. It would make sense if Gwen entered the comic-books at around these times, these are the ones she'd likely interact with. But beyond that there is stuff like the Good Doom arc that really sells it because Gwen calls it out for what it is: an 'obviously temporary continuity blip' but also establishes that change is a constant in comics. EVERY single era of comic books are going to have their FOTM's, their gimmick runs, their bizarre experiments that may or may not age well, and the book acknowledges that. It's why Gwenpool still feels like it's aged as well as it has despite featuring dated elements like Jane Thor or Good Doom.
>>153224648I think it'd be neat if this guy Gwen threw into the fire of her first issue were to return seeking revenge. Like a bit of karma for Gwen when she was at her most murder-hobo and making her reflect on how callously she acted way back. Maybe even give the Teuthidans giving him a bunch of upgrades since he died on their ship as a way of getting their revenge on her as well, using a couple of her earliest enemies.
>>153227435I want to protect that smile
>>153218421She was never based off of her, dumbass.
>>153215751it's kind of funny in retrospect how Gwen's first big job was protecting mutants and fighting Sentinels, knowing what comes way later for her down the line
>>153215433I never understood why Marvel was still doing the Gwen Stacy variants on characters years after ASM 2
Should she get a uncle that read comics or a comicbook guy on her background? She has 30's by now, but she still has a lot of knowledge of old comics...
>>153232372I'd assumed Gwen's interest in comic-books were just something she picked up on as a kid and grew up with, given no one else in her family is into them, but the idea she picked it up from an uncle/relative is a neat idea. An uncle who maybe didn't have any kids of his own and wanted to pass down all his vintage old comics to his only niece would be cool, and I imagine Gwen could make a few 'Uncle Ben' bits about a that.
Take it with a grain of salt.
>>153233905>See Spider-Gwen>Heart sinks>"Spider-gwen has a pink bomber jacket and white/pink body suit with two swords on her back">Leaker legitate mixed up Spider-Gwen for Gwenpool>Pic-relatedI want to believe
>>153234087>Leaker legitate mixed up Spider-Gwen for GwenpoolMany such cases
>>153233905Going to take a random euro at his word for curiosity's take>Captain America, Ghost Rider, Gwenpool, She-HulkTokon does their rosters in teams of 4 right, like how you have the Spider-Team, the X-team, etc.Could this be the Cap's Kooky Quartet team?
>>153235015No, Captain America and Ghost Rider are the leader of their respective teams.
>>153216164Jesus it's been 10 years already? Where did the time go?>Were you in the original storytime thread 10 years ago? Those threads were how I got introduced to her actually. Still love her after all this time.
I kind of want to storytime but with captcha and posting being so slow right now it'd be a pain in the ass. I guess I'll see if things are fixed and this thread is still around tomorrow but I'm not waiting like 2 minutes to try and post things.
>>153235420If you're feeling up to it more story-times would be very cool
>>153235015So Rider lead the Midnight Sons?
>>153235015Assuming the leak is real (which remember it may well not be) I assume She-Hulk is definitely on Cap's 'Avenger' team then with a big A-symbolUnless they're actually squeezing in A-Force to this, which Gwen may be on that team
>>153216164I was around for the originals, charmed enough by the art but not a super fan or a coomer. When the artist changed I stopped reading, not sure if I missed it on anything. Ty for the storytime.
>>153233905I like the idea of Tokon Gwen wearing a bomber-jacket on top of her outfit. She wears them alot in her casual wear, the big heavy jackets she likes to pair with her shorts
As someone who didn't keep up with her, did they ever use the Out of Universe gimmick to be even mildly critical? Calling stuff out as pushed or smothered, trite, even just a weird writing move? I feel like her super power of Comic Fan needs at least SOME haterism for the increasingly new, but then again she could just be a consoomer, certainly doesn't have to go full Eltingville
