What happened to the human love interest/human friend group? It feels they don't exist anymore and in the past few years they've all become superheroes themselves.
>>
>>153220022
You mean filler?
>>
You can just buy superpowers. There is no reason to be a baseline human anymore.
>>
>>153220022
Nobody wants to write superheroes with normie supporting casts anymore. The few supporting characters they can't get rid of, like MJ there, Lois Lane, etc, end up getting powers to justify keeping them around. In MJ's case, it's also repeated attempts to give her a role of her own away from being Spider-Man's love interest.
>>
>>153220022
Instead of making stories more substantial or thoughtful to make up for comics increasing in price and writers/creators demanding more money for less work and manga eating western comic's lunch, editors decided we just need variants, crossovers, and events. Thus, more ideas rather than any substance. Pitches, designs, and more instead of memories associated with those ideas. Except now even these hacks can't even produce a good design anymore. Case in point, Jackpot. Holy ugly fucking costume, Batman.
>>
>>153220022
No one can write normal people anymore. I think modern fans overthink shit too much and think it's unrealistic or played out for heroes to have secret identities with distinct separations between civilian and human sides. They want it to be like a CW show where everyone is involved in the super heroics in some way or another, not realizing the separation is a key factor in the metaphor and themes of the superhero genre and just good for an ongoing comic to have some fucking variety.
>>
>>153220022
Result of decompressed stories taking more space to have stuff "happen" and leaves less space to have heroes have some downtime
>>
>>153220022
Then add to the problem of most stories are just characters talking and eating instead of superheroing.
>looks at Rainbow Rowell's She-Hulk run.
>>
Franchising. Everyone must have spin offs now, and you can't have a spin off of a boring regular human. They tried that before with Aunt May and Lois Lane and it just doesn't work, nobody wants to read it. So they gotta give them power.
>>
>>153220022
We dont have time for that, every comic canonly have 5 issues until the Status Quo hit in.
>>
>>153220771
Hey, Lois Lane had a 100 issues of wacky bullshit back in the day. And Mary Jane had a comic for teen girls that went on for a while, wonder how that holds up.
>>
>>153220824
This is what comics are these days. Desperate writers hoping their new latest change becomes part of an adaptation so they get royalty rights, and then movie synergy causes it to become the status quo. Then 99% of the time it doesn't catch on so they just reset back to the status quo.
>>
>>153220872
The stories dosent help too.
One of Cap.Marvel runs:
She get a new apartament, know a neibour and her daughter (ho is a fan) start to date War Machine... and in Issue 2 she goes to space have solo adventures and fuck every other caracter in issue 1
>>
>>153221003
Its just their attempt to introduce OCs in hopes that they'll get adapted.
>>
>>153220111
I said it in another thread but I think its because of Zendaya. She's a big star so they wanna give her a movie of her own, so they need to give MJ powers in the comics in order do justify a Mary Jane movie.
>>
>>153220265
The MCU did more damage to comics than the slow death of the medium itself.
>>
>>153220265
They love more designs because they can sell them as toys and costumes and DLC outfits in games. So everyone gets a new outfit every couple of months.

Because the "superhero family" has taken over hero and his normie friends. Because you can make lots of spin offs with them and increase the amount of diversity in your comics. Its how they shoehorn in a lot of women heroes. Also because they believe teams are bigger than solos thanks to superhero movies.
Also what >>153220273 said with the CW thing, that really caused the superhero family thing to go into overdrive.
>>
>>153220399
Thats the confusing thing too. Feels like a lot of comics these days are more fluff and slice of life rather than actually fighting villains. It'll be a massive story arc, followed by filler issues of slice of life. Filler issues used to be when they'd bring in a D-list villain for the hero to whoop for an issue. Now that no longer happens.

But what's weird is that human friends are perfect for slice of life and fluff, but instead now it's a bunch of heroes doing slice of life shit in their costumes.
>>
>>153220273
secret identity is fine in concept, people just got sick of it being played for contrived drama. most of it was variations of
>if i tell girl, she is such a retard that telling her will reveal my secret to everyone for some reason. she will be in more danger if she is in any way informed about the enemies who want to kill me, despite her getting kidnapped every other week just incidentally anyway
>>
>>153221242
Comics by the mid 00's were already embarrassing compared to manga and were already in a ghetto of failed tv creators because the companies that own them don't respect their own product and had not a lot of cash and infrastructure to pivot from print phasing out. They also made bad financial decisions like Marvel and had to use cheap tabloid shit to dig themselves out as well as selling out to other larger companies. And yet they still did not think of their product as good or as meaningful. They sacrificed consumer loyalty and brand image for money.
MCU just made those problems worse by standardizing aesthetics and personalities which were already flanderized. MCU just meant more forced shit being shoved into comics and a bunch of consumers who weren't loyal, entering into comics and realizing how little story you get when you fork over the cash. Or they projected shitty opinions.
>>153221408
Yep. I agree.

>>153220022
some people working in comics are wasting their time worrying about the opinions of secondaries and movie-onlies. Some of said secondaries think having a secret identity is played out and if you follow that logic their supporting cast end up getting powers/power suits etc so they also participate in the adventures besides just being helpless hostages. i think its dumb
>>
>>153224516
Terrible idea. The civilians are what keep the hero's attachment to humanity.
>>
>>153220022
>What happened to the human love interest/human friend group?
Dumb and useless

>It feels they don't exist anymore and in the past few years they've all become superheroes themselves
Same reason they removed sidekicks
The offered nothing
>>
>>153224516
People kind of forgot why secret identities exist, which caused a self reinforcing issue.
>>
>>153221656
while i can agree that the contrived drama often got annoying and played for the non super character finding out the hero's identity and going on some rant about "you LIED to me?!" which i do think is kinda played out but you dont have to use that part of it
>>
>>153224616
>People kind of forgot why secret identities exist
Inertia
Superman and batman only have them because its too entrenched in their characters to remove now, but it was already old hat in the 60s
>>
>>153224737
Superman would end up too alienated, and Bruce would receive too many lawsuits.
>>
Flash getting venom was a mistake and i'm tired of pretending it wasn't.
>>

really? i feel like thats one of the ones that actually works and fans generally liked. that being said i dont keep up with modern venom but from what i hear its unrecognizable to what im used to. Yeah I wouldn't want to be tunnel brothers with the entire Marvel Universe neither.
>>
Flash hasn’t been a member of Peter’s supporting cast ever since he became Agent Venom, which doesn’t really serve a purpose because we already have hundreds of symbiote users. Flash works best depowered and interacting with MJ and Peter. It also started the whole mess of Peter’s supporting cast getting powers except MJ which makes her stick out like a sore thumb, since for the longest time she was the only one without powers. Peter needs more depowered friends instead of everyone getting abilities.
>>
>>153224945
He's got Randy. He's never going to get superpowers.

>Peter needs more depowered friends instead of everyone getting abilities.

Marvel barely did anything with nonpowered Flash other than make him an alcoholic and later gym teacher. You can hate on Agent Venom and Symbiotes all you want, but those are far better uses than what preceded it.

By the 70s
Ross was Zzax once or twice
Betty was Harpy
Rick was Hulk jr like 2 or 3 times
>>
>>153225668
>>153225044
Yeah this has always been a thing it just never sticks and they revert back to the status quo. Only difference now is rather than try to make them sidekicks they try to make them independent heroes. Rick was also Bucky at one point.
>>
>>153226341
Also Captain Marvel's other half. Twice.
>>
>>153226341
>>153226437
Rick's been all over the place in their outright refusal to have him just as the human friend
>Starts off as Hulk's human buddy
>Becomes a Hulk himself
>Loses his Hulk powers, back to human buddy
>Becomes Bucky for a short time
>Ends up in a body swapping situation with Captain Marvel where only one of them can inhabit the same space at the same time through transformation (Trying to capitalize on DC Captain Marvel/Shazam)
>Ends up splitting from the body but then they share a linked mind still and linked powers
>Loses the link and ends up as Mar-Vell Captain Marvel's human friend.
>Gains Nega-Bands for a while
>Mar-Vell dies, back to Hulk's human friend
>Becomes a Hulk again for an issue
>Ends up mind merged with Gennis-Vel's Captain Marvel this time
>They end up splitting and he become Gennis-Vel's human friend
>Ends up being aged up and becomes a one armed space sidekick
>Ends up de-aged
>Ends up mind merged with Gennis-Vel again this time summoning him through equipping the Nega Bands
>Seperates from Gennis and ends up in character limbo
>Becomes Hulk's human friend again after they remember him
>Becomes a blue Hulk called A-Bomb
>Ends up losing his A-Bomb powers, becomes a hacker of all things called "The Whisperer" who is like Hulk's version of Oracle, this was when Oracle in DC was pretty big
>Ends up becoming the new Abomination and goes crazy
>Eventually turns good
>Ends up losing his Abomination powers
>Becomes Phylla-Vel's human friend
>Bonds with a Symbiote
>Becomes a Symbiote Secret Agent called Sleeper Agent, associated with Agent Venom
>Loses the Symbiote
>Bonds with Toxin Symbiote not long after
>Becomes a hero called Captain Spider (current status quo)

Look at this shit. What a character.
>>
>>153226898
Oh and to show how schizo they are with him everyhing from the beginning to character limbo happened in the span of 40 years. But everything from A-Bomb - Captain Spider happened since 2008. Whisperer was 2016, Abomination was 2019, turned good in 2021, Phylla Vel was 2022, Sleeper Agent was 2025, Captain Spider was also 2025.

>What happened to the human love interest/human friend group?
Here's a better question. What happened to professionalism in the comic industry? Imagine being this mad at a potshot from a video game that actively ships a super powered character to another one. You don't expect the subject to be addressed when the perpetrators think that they are immune to any form of criticism.

Where's the anger at Marvel Rivals? If anything, it looks like the comic is promoting the game via product placement.

JackPot as a concept is fucking stupid but it could have been fun if she was dating Peter and they were Crime fighting partners. He would have to deal with chaos of her powers. Maybe she starts using the device becuase she is jealous of Black Cat and wants to spend more time with Peter. Also, I like the idea of Peter building her gadgets, its cute.

What I don't need is to watch Mary Jane build a relationship with another Man, it destroys her brand.

It's a matter of dilution over timel. The superhero archetype is currently a kludge of several distinct power fantasies which do not combine well.
