A great early 80s cartoon that set the stage for He-Man and inspired many other cartoons and games like RIFTS. Only 21 episodes but the setting was fantastic in every sense of the word. And now it's got a comic series that came out recently.

>In the year 1994, From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Human's civilization is cast in ruin! Two thousand years later, Earth is recivilized with A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil. He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

The show reminds me of Kamandi and it had the original VA for Fred Flintstone as one of the villians.

>>153222175
Kamandi, absolutely, both designed by Jack Kirby and channelling all the disaster, end-of-the-world, post-apoc movies of the 70s.

Is it actually worth watching or the designs by Kirby are the only thing it has going for, especially for a sucker of his style like me?
>>
>>153223948
If you're a sucker for Kirby's style then it's definitely worth watching for that alone. The stories are mid to low, the character animation is rudimentary, and the backdrops are great. There are some fun ideas in the show though and as mentioned earlier the villains are quite interesting.

It's an early '80s action cartoon so I assume that it's probably poorly animated, has laughably bad action and shit voice acting in spite of Gerber trying his best.

Thundarr is the most underrated cartoon of it's day. It's harrowing how little WB does with the property. They own the precursor to He-man along with Thundercats and never once considered a crossover, a movie adaption, nothing. It's a tragedy.

It's a shame Gerber died before he got a chance to do anything with a revival. Of course by this point he'd be almost 80.

That opening was so fucking kino. I remember watching it on boomerang back in the day and always getting hyped. Recently I decided I want to try and make my own little pulp novella set in a similar sort of world to Thundarr's as well as Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. I just think a post apocalyptic world of lost technology and magic is very cool.
>>
There's an early 20th century pulp author who really pioneered a lot of this distant future post-apocalypse fantasy earth with a wandering hero stuff but I fucking forgot his name, it reminded me a lot of Thundarr and even Samurai Jack when I heard about his stuff
It wasn't Jack Vance I'm sure. Basically

I'm really tired of "toy cartoon bad" takes. Alot of those shows had fun writing, good action, and cool visuals. It's also worth noting how much toy cartoons evolved overtime. If you really want to go out into the weeds, everything from BTAS to Secret Saturdays were "toy cartoons".
>>
>>153226617
>Thundarr revival with designs done by Steve Rude and Tom Scioli never
>>
>>153226195
It'd be just as easy a crossover to realize as MOTU/Thundercats IMO. Just have Mumm-ra and Gemini build some sort of space-time doohickey that summons one cast into the other's setting, and hijinx ensue.

Really alot of warner's acquired IPs should have gotten small revival projects here and there. Granted alot of the rankin bass holidy stuff from the 2000's turned out rough, the occasional Thundarr or Thundercats DTV movie couldnt have hurt. Odd how much merch Thundercats still gets while Thundarr is widely forgotten and largely unmerchandised...

I think one of the earliest 20th post apocalyptic novel was, The Earth Abides. The first part is a survivor, Ishi, traveling across what's left of America after a plague killed most of the population and meeting other survivors. The second part is about the Ishi trying build a society with other survivors.

I would genuinely pay through the nose to watch a full production like this.

Having brought up the Thundercats crossover idea earlier I also wanted to suggest dynamite make a Kamandi/Thundarr crossover book in league with DC. Get all the Kirby successors on it. There's bound to be a market for it.

This show had the best wizard supervillains, like Gemini. I think Adventure Time stole a lot of their ideas.
>>
>>153243080
It did, but generally speaking AT stole alot from other genre staples. The early seasons are as much Conan and Thundarr as they are Jungle Book and Peter Pan. Over the last year I cooked up an AT pastiche out of frustration with what the series became. Besides focusing on surreal and fantastic, retaining a serious tone, and ditching all the 2010's humor an idea I had saw not-Finn teaming up with not-Thundarr. I'll catbox it just to avoid derailing the thread
