A great early 80s cartoon that set the stage for He-Man and inspired many other cartoons and games like RIFTS. Only 21 episodes but the setting was fantastic in every sense of the word. And now it's got a comic series that came out recently. >In the year 1994, From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Human's civilization is cast in ruin! Two thousand years later, Earth is recivilized with A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil. He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

Had a great female protagonist in the form of Ariel the Sorceress.
>>153222080
>>153221486The show reminds me of Kamandi and it had the original VA for Fred Flintstone as one of the villians.
>>153222175Kamandi, absolutely, both designed by Jack Kirby and channelling all the disaster, end-of-the-world, post-apoc movies of the 70s.
>>153222080post the images anon, you know thoseWith her canon small nips and shave
>>153222608I could never. But I'll post some chaste pinups.

>>153222722
>>153222737
>>153222752She's very cute when she struggles.
Had some of the coolest villain designs.
>>153222688henderson made r34 of hers also here is the archive chain posthttps://desuarchive.org/co/thread/152844803/#q152854324
>>153223153Yeah, the nudes are all on Paheal. What made her interesting was that she was an Indian Wonder Woman and the brains of the party.
>>153223482>pahealthat shit is dying soon, save on gelbooru and such.
>>153223501What, why? Is something happening to paheal?
>>153221486I'd like to see an art book with the Kirby , Toth designs Maybe the show bible by Steve Gerber
>>153221673.>sloppa
>>153221486Is it actually worth watching or the designs by Kirby are the only thing it has going for, especially for a sucker of his style like me?
>>153223948If you're a sucker for Kirby's style then it's definitely worth watching for that alone. The stories are mid to low, the character animation is rudimentary, and the backdrops are great. There are some fun ideas in the show though and as mentioned earlier the villains are quite interesting.

>>153224113>we got Star Wars at home
>>153224943But Star Wars wasn't set on Earth 300 years into the future after an apocalypse and beneath a broken moon!
>>153224980
>>153225033
For all the 80s revivals I'm surprised this never got one. You even have the brown princess prebaked in.
>>153224980That faggot isn't aware of how derivative Star Wars is.It gets jarring once you start reading old pulps.
>>153223948It's an early '80s action cartoon so I assume that it's probably poorly animated, has laughably bad action and shit voice acting in spite of Gerber trying his best.
>>153225407I'm a fan but this is 100% true, 80s toons get good after Regan changes things. But for a basically 70's cartoon this show is pretty ghudDemon Dogs
>>153225211youre right but in interviews Ive heard lucas and others constantly mention pulps and flash gordon as influences.
>>153225043WHERE IS OMNI-MAN?!
>>153221673it's almost worrisome how much better AI gets every few months. I saw a family matters SEGA sitcom video and so many things, from the amount of fingers, correct words, to scale of action figures in the background looked good. I dont think AI is going away any time soon
>>153225637Sora being killed is gonna decrease the quality for a while. Nothing else really compared to it
>>153221486Thundarr is the most underrated cartoon of it's day. It's harrowing how little WB does with the property. They own the precursor to He-man along with Thundercats and never once considered a crossover, a movie adaption, nothing. It's a tragedy.
>>153224113I've been reading them over the last few weeks. They're long overdue. Probably the best book in dynamite's modern line up.
>>153224929Now that you point it out I cant unhear it...>>153225180Ted Turner bought so much shit the suits at Warner neither recognized nor acknowledge. If it's not Scooby Doo or Tom and Jerry they cant be fucked to care. Look how little they did with the rest of the Rankin Bass and Ruby Spears libraries. Criminal!!!
>>153225211I'd heard about SW copying Dambusters but until I watched the comparison I had no idea how much was lifted
>>153225878And The Hidden Fortress, and a bunch of other things. But that's normal for creative development. It's just funny seeing people exclaim "He copied Star Wars!" when the antecedents are much farther back.
>>153225682You know, I didn't know a Thundaar/Thundercats crossover was something I wanted.
>>153226168Yeah, if one looks hard enough you can see elements of the Oz books. The more obvious examples are Princess Ozma and the Bears of Bear Center.
>>153225682>>153226195>Thundarr x Thundercats crossoverI'd watch that faster than Cheetara gives a handjob.
>>153221486Recall in the documentary that it was originally a nuclear war, but Ruby thought that was too dark for kids.
>>153226551Is that right? Which documentary was this?
I have to say, Conan with a lightsaber is a more compelling concept than He-Man or Flash Gordon.
Especially with all the Kirbyism.
>>153226567The Lords of Light
>>153226617
search for the serien porn parody, pretty nice
>>153221486Hail to all the chads of 1994. We came along just in time for the apocalypse!
>>153225697It's a shame Gerber died before he got a chance to do anything with a revival. Of course by this point he'd be almost 80.
>>153222080And what a form! Hubba hubba!
That opening was so fucking kino. I remember watching it on boomerang back in the day and always getting hyped. Recently I decided I want to try and make my own little pulp novella set in a similar sort of world to Thundarr's as well as Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. I just think a post apocalyptic world of lost technology and magic is very cool.
There's an early 20th century pulp author who really pioneered a lot of this distant future post-apocalypse fantasy earth with a wandering hero stuff but I fucking forgot his name, it reminded me a lot of Thundarr and even Samurai Jack when I heard about his stuffIt wasn't Jack Vance I'm sure. Basically >>153229623if anyone remember you should probably read his work too, big influence on /co/ stuff like this
Better than He-man and Thundercats since those things literally only existed for toys and it showed
>>1532299491973 post-apocalyptic novel Hiero's Journey by Sterling E. Lanier.
>>153230532>1973I think it was even earlier than that, 50's or before
Ariel Scans Bump
>>153229962I'm really tired of "toy cartoon bad" takes. Alot of those shows had fun writing, good action, and cool visuals. It's also worth noting how much toy cartoons evolved overtime. If you really want to go out into the weeds, everything from BTAS to Secret Saturdays were "toy cartoons".
>>153226617>Thundarr revival with designs done by Steve Rude and Tom Scioli never
>>153226195It'd be just as easy a crossover to realize as MOTU/Thundercats IMO. Just have Mumm-ra and Gemini build some sort of space-time doohickey that summons one cast into the other's setting, and hijinx ensue.Really alot of warner's acquired IPs should have gotten small revival projects here and there. Granted alot of the rankin bass holidy stuff from the 2000's turned out rough, the occasional Thundarr or Thundercats DTV movie couldnt have hurt. Odd how much merch Thundercats still gets while Thundarr is widely forgotten and largely unmerchandised...
>>153221486>now it's got a comic series that came out recently.Shame it's written by Jason Aaron
>>153231328It's not been that bad of a read. He's certainly delivered worse.
>>153222080Cheetara WHO??
>>153230835I think one of the earliest 20th post apocalyptic novel was, The Earth Abides. The first part is a survivor, Ishi, traveling across what's left of America after a plague killed most of the population and meeting other survivors. The second part is about the Ishi trying build a society with other survivors.
>>153229623Common staple of every JRPG out there. Executed always in a very shitty way though.
>>153232144Mary Shelly wrote the last man before the 20th century, and The Night Land is also another fantasy example
I was probably 5 or 6 when this aired and man, it was the coolest thing ever.
>>153233966>dem perky brown nipples
>>153234482These ones? https://litter.catbox.moe/4t6uofa9t2h79m1p.png
>>153230961>>153222608Are you referring to the production sketches allegedly drawn by Jack Kirby or Alex Toth showing Ariel in her au naturel state? https://litter.catbox.moe/yr6e3jfxtmdt9qhw.gifhttps://litter.catbox.moe/nwgn08koy7m8t7hz.jpg
>>153234469Really? I was roughly the same age and I hated the show. I found it bleak and depressing and the Thundarr's Temu Wookie sidekick creeped me out.
>>153223871We already got live action Thundaar at home
>>153236299What the...?!? Is this from one of those weird "Christmas Specials" they had in the 80s or something?
>>153236299I would genuinely pay through the nose to watch a full production like this.Having brought up the Thundercats crossover idea earlier I also wanted to suggest dynamite make a Kamandi/Thundarr crossover book in league with DC. Get all the Kirby successors on it. There's bound to be a market for it.
>>153236464I would not. That bowlcut on Thundarr is awful, his physique is embarrassing, and Ariel is flatter than Lisa Simpson. Blegh.
>>153236575>he wouldnt sit through a live action Thundarr adaption with power rangers tier costuming and SFX
>>153236375It was a like a proto-Kid's Choice Awards thinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlX8SmujYsoThundaar the and gang appear athttps://youtu.be/5MP5t-1IIM4?t=2128after an animated sequence Mr T even shows up somewhere in there
>>153236655>6655I'm sorry, dub-dubs. Perhaps I am wrong.
The idea of a game was kicked around once.
>>153237112>>153237112What kind of game? There are several tabletop RPGs inspired by Thundarr, one of which is Under a Broken Moon:https://www.rpglibrary.org/settings/thundarr/world.shtml
>>153237270The other is RIFTS.
>>153237720
>>153237728
>>153229949>>153230532Found it. Clarke Ashton Smith's Zothique is what I was thinking about. Not the first but definitely one of the big influences in this genre of far off post-apocalyptic futures where magic exists. >>153232144That does sound right up my alley.
>>153237734VERY COOL
This show had the best wizard supervillains, like Gemini. I think Adventure Time stole a lot of their ideas.
>>153243080It did, but generally speaking AT stole alot from other genre staples. The early seasons are as much Conan and Thundarr as they are Jungle Book and Peter Pan. Over the last year I cooked up an AT pastiche out of frustration with what the series became. Besides focusing on surreal and fantastic, retaining a serious tone, and ditching all the 2010's humor an idea I had saw not-Finn teaming up with not-Thundarr. I'll catbox it just to avoid derailing the thread https://files.catbox.moe/jwc1z8.jpg
>>153243630>Ty-Foon and MagnusThat's a cool idea! No need to spoiler it or hide it, looks awesome. Is Tethys a place or a Big Bad Evil Gal in your setting?
My ideal mismatched 80s-90s animated hero team (no Marvel/Dc)> Goliath (Gargoyles)> Wildwing (mighty ducks)> Duke L'Orange (Mighty Ducks)> Steelheart (Silverhawks)> Ariel (Thundarr)> Octavia (TigerSharks)
>>153243080For me it's Mindok The Mind Menace, just for the alliteration.
