There’s an ultimate issue. The original series was made over a 3-4 year period. This not even 2 hour movie took 3 or so years to make. I think we can all agree that we’d easily accept cutting the quality or whatever in half if it meant getting consistent content with this gaang. Because of Flying Bark's involvement I can't help but compare this movie to the Rise TMNT movie (the first streaming 2d animated movie they did animation work on) and how that one felt more satisfying storywise to watch, even if it's also simple and taking from the Terminator plot. Partly because it emotionally put the MC through the wringer in a way he deserved, and the main villain was more naturally charismatic and had sharper conviction about what he was doing at every step. Of course the writing teams and the mindsets they had were completely separate but Bryke as leaders on projects can be so... frustrating. They have these little pieces of true ambition that just kind of meander around and flipflop, instead of the writing helping it to feel more piercing

I can accept a new voice cast. The problem is they didn’t even try. The casters only cared about getting Asian people and it’s like they grabbed the first people who auditioned. Aang was a total miscast. Sokka was the only one that was pretty good but that’s because you can tell that’s the only actor that gave a shit. The voice director needs to get fired, you could feel the lack of direction in many scenes.

They do say that Yakone and immediate family are the only ones that were able to do it without the full moon but this is the same series that turned Ozai and Azula's ultimate death move into a minimum wage job. Even if they stick with that, nothing will change the fact Amon taught himself to use it to disable bending. The story works best if you just ignore that fact like the writers do past season 1. Without that, it's number 3 and Earth is comfortably number 2. It's really hard to completely isolate someone from earth or metal. It's quite literally everywhere except in the air which is why any Airbender with that doesn't have a Firetard brain can easily hard counter it. Again this is something the writers just ignored for the sake of the plot in Book 3. Katara thinking to bend her own sweat was a big moment for her. It would've been ruined if Toph just you know, used her seismic sense ability to feel for the earth beneath their cell.

It's fine most of the time when people are talking, but in emotionally charged scenes it's like the VAs hold back. It was painful watching those Aang breakdown scenes where the crying failed to match the visuals, particularly the one moment where he's shedding tears after collapsing but his voice isn't breaking at all. Same for screaming scenes in general, with the exception of Aang while he's getting corrupted by the staff.

You could have Toph throwing boulders at people and still get the impression they'd live, now there's so much animated force behind it that you'd feel like they should be punching straight through peoples bodies.Same with stuff like Mai's throwing knives, its a very deadly weapon objectively, but she basically only ever used them to pin people down or hit them with shallow cuts. Avatar just needed to go back to the fancier, less brutal 'martial arts movie' style fight choreography, that way people not being violently gored to death by bending or weapons wouldn't feel so out of place.
