Why was it more popular with preschoolers than the other Nick shows? Not only was it featured in an Oswald promo, but also one where Squidward "was going to host Blue's Clues". Disney never had Hannah Montana included with Playhouse Disney, but Nick included SpongeBob with Nick Jr. plenty.

Keep in mind even when Fairly OddParents briefly became Nick's #1 show and even had days where it was bigger than SpongeBob as late as 2005 or 2006, it was never quite as big with 4 year olds as much as SpongeBob.

Because SpongeBob is a very friendly, approachable character, I guess.

Nick actually seemed to be pretty adamant about keeping Nick Jr separated from regular Nick while I was growing up. I think the only two real exceptions were Rugrats and SpongeBob, where they sorta bridged the gap between the two blocks.

You’d never see really see Blue appear in any of the Nick promos or vice versa, which is why exceptions like that “new host” promo are interesting. Blues Clues was pretty much as big as SpongeBob in its heyday from a standpoint of popularity and recognizability, it’s kind of weird in retrospect that stuff like Blue and Dora aren’t really considered “Nicktoons” and rarely if ever showed up together in channel branded merch. Like it’s kinda weird thinking about how Blue is one of Nick’s biggest and most recognized characters, more so than even some of the other popular nicktoons.

I'm just gonna say it, Fairly OddParents felt like it aimed older than SpongeBob. I'm probably the only one who feels this way, but SpongeBob felt incredibly universal. Even if a preschooler doesn't fully understand the show, they might like the visuals. I'm not sure if a preschooler would care for Fairly OddParents. I recall it being more dialogue focused where as SpongeBob was very visual focused. Plus, OddParents focused on school life stuff in several episodes with bullies and snobs and such.

Keep in mind, Nick Jr included SpongeBob in both promos because the premieres were held during primetime Nick hours. This was back when Nickelodeon would premiere a special episode or a new series of a Nick Jr show as a special primetime premiere event (really common in the 2000's, but not so much in the 2010's and 2020's).

personally I think it's them trying to reaffirm SpongeBob as a show for EVERYBODY, why not hammer that into people's heads by using him in Nick Jr promos?

I found this from 2004. I also know SpongeBob had a game for the V.Smile.

On the adult side of things, I remember hearing they aired SpongeBob on I believe Spike TV in anticipation of the movie back in 2004. I know it aired on Nick at Nite in a marathon to hype the film up.

Early SpongeBob wasn't as nearly mean. crude, and latchkey kid esque as something like Fairly Odd Parents.

MTV also aired SpongeBob at one point in 2009, if I recall correctly.

SpongeBob was popular with everyone. Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Zoomers. The original SpongeBob was loved by everyone.

And it had less mundane writing/a more appealing/cartoonier artstyle than The Klasky-Csupo Nicktoons and Football Head
