The avatar state was NERFED in this. The movie was very resistant to give Aang actual power. But that’s the conundrum of a fully realized Avatar, there’s no real physical or spiritual threat. So in order to give the Avatar challenge you have to make some crazy world ending threat or some mcgufffin item like liquid mercury or a staff that the villain can conveniently wield. Bryke never planned Aang’s story past 3 seasons and Korra past 1 where then after they’d be fully realized so they conveniently avoided facing the issue. But then you get to Korra’s unplanned season 2 where the plot has to bend over multiple times to make her lose.

Man every element gets buffed except Firebending. Which admitedly started out as the strongest in episode 1, but as they make more techniques, fire is left behind.
The animation and some of the things in the plot like the staff and the spiritual bullshit made this feel like a Chinese knockoff. I did like the concept of the villain and they did well with the character interactions and fights. All in all, this could've easily been a shitty movie, but they managed to make it above average, which for me is great news.
