Less "gruff bastard with control over everything but hasn't lost sight of the common man at all" and more "guy that has all the power but also has to deal with the worst shit imaginable, and shoulders through it because he genuinely cares about everyone" Helps that here, it's subtle but he's noticeably more fucked up. His lip thing that makes him look kinda stroked out is more pronounced, he's got a boxer's face, he's old in an old man way than show cecil being more gaunt, his neck is thicker/flabbier, etc. etc. Basically, he's not some grim badass, he's a guy that's clearly had to deal with a lot of shit for god knows how long
