Chapter 102: Page 5That's Renard.https://www.gunnerkrigg.com
>>153238590Thanks, I hate him.
>>153238590So Renard was the schlubby childhood friend batting way out of his league this whole time. I now support it cuz he just like me fr fr except for the hot redhead friend.
>in this world ysengrin is beefy and handsome>renard is pudgy and derpfacedWhat did tom mean by this?
>>153238590>Ok Coyote, we're making our silly mundane dream world to pad out the finale. Obviously I'm gonna look like goth Annie, and Gamma is gonna be thicc. Annie's always been nice so let her have a perfect life with Ysengrin as her dad. and make her two... no three times as erotic>And what of my cousin, Reynard?>Make him a short little faggot.
>>153238621No.This is Zimmy's world, not reality. My guess is this terrible Rey likely comes from Gamma's impression of him when they had their talk.
>>153238590... I just want to remind everyone that Renard won the #1 spot on the popularity poll. Anyone who thinks Tom isn't doing this shit on purpose is lying to themselves.
>>153238590I hope he gets bullied into suicide. in a single day.
>>153238590Excuse me!?Renard would be hot!!
>>153238590This pains me more then any intentional Two Annies teasing would've. I hope he's happy at least, he did want to retvrn to fox.
>>153238692This.
>>153238590he looks oddly soft
I guess getting stuck in a plushie and being magically enslaved to her for several years left a mark on his independent wild side.
>>153238643So who's imagining Ysengrin as a hot teacher? He was like that before Annie arrived.
Over five years ago
heh, called it>>153213575Still thrown off that Ysengrin's the dad instead of him, but I guess I see what Tom's doing now.
>>153239085
>>153239243
>>153239243this is why she's never comming back lmao
>>153239243how does one triple the other?
>>153239263Court Annie was new at the time and acted witchy.
>>153239257Zimmy!>>153239263Maybe Forest Annie was considered the original, and that aspect of her was the most liked? I recall we each could make five votes and some complained that the two annies should have had a single joint entry to avoid splitting. I remember voting for each.
>>153239302Jones!
>>153239310
>>153239323
>>153239331
>>153239341
>>15323935910th place winner overshadows Robot.
>>153238590HUH
>>153238590Coyote seems surprised. Did his prediction/plan already fail? Again?
>>153239263We stuck with FAnnie, CAnnie from our pov just shows up and goes "yeah here's what I've been up to", disadvantaged even if she's also our Annie.>>153239371Wow Shadow top 10 though. Been a hot minute since the comic gave him anything worthy.
We need a new popularity poll, with the witches and Omega in it.
>>153239665Remember back when this comic had a likeable cast of characters who all got things to do
KEK how badly did the last thread die after the retards seethed about "t-there's two annies!!"
>>153239371kinda surprised by that, I thought Robot was the bigger character
GUISE ITS TOTALLY TWO DIFFERENT BEDS
>>153240056You're laughing? Interest in the comic is dying again and you're laughing?
>>153240135As well it should. He had one chance and he blew it. Blundered it. Blundershit Shart.
>>153238590what the fuck is that.
>>153239243>main character is second place in popularityEven on a meta level, Annie gets bullied. >>153239302>some complained that the two annies should have had a single joint entry to avoid splitting. Me. I was some people. >I remember voting for each.Same.
>check the forum>even the absolute diehards hate distortion!ReyBrilliant.
>>153239302>>153240205Well here's the thing, I would accept vote splitting IF that were evidence that they were, in fact, going to remain permanently distinct characters.Splitting the vote and then merging them anyway is downright fraudulent. This is election interference.
On the plus side, Annie/Renard shippers can go for the school romance angle now. At least some snogging behind the bike shed.
>>153240244Oh god, you're right. In hindsight, this was total bullshit. If he allegedly planned to always merge them together, why were they separate entries in the poll? Tom, you lying sack of shit. This is why nobody believes that "incompatible with the ending" crap. No matter how you look at it, it just doesn't track. Fuck, I just found a new reason to be mad.
>>153240242>even the absolute diehards hate distortion!ReyThis reminds me of the time they revealed the appearance of the invisible man in Hotel Transylvania and all the ikeman fantasies were destroyed to much outrage. This matches Renards vibe pretty well. Pathetic incel who acted edgy to compensate, realized how sad that was and gave it up, and now is just kind of mellow.
>>153240348>invisible man in Hotel TransylvaniaI just looked that up. Yeah, I'd be pissed too. >This matches Renards vibe pretty well. Pathetic incel who acted edgy to compensate, realized how sad that was and gave it up, and now is just kind of mellow.Yes, that is Rey's character arc, but that doesn't mean his design has to suck.
>>153240348But he's also a protective mysterious older man.
>>153240272I don't want that creature to be shipped with anyone.
>>153240348I'm still furious about the Invisible Man! This is worse than that time Jim Carrey got a botched facelift!
>>153240592He WAS mysterious when we didn't know the answers to the mystery. Now we do, and we know he was a loser all along. Mystery aura in tatters. This is Tom telling us this how we should be seeing Rey these days and I completely agree. Anyone who disagrees is clinging to a flawed outdated perception of his character just because he keeps taking the form of a sleek oversized fox.
>>153240242I remember Tom going back and changing Annie's nose in an already published page when there was dan backlash. If he's still sensitive to such panels Rey's design may subtally shift over the next few pages.
>>153240755*Fan*Pressures
>>153240733I dunno. I get that he's not, like, cool. But still feels like a demotion to go to a same-age fellow student. He's more unemployed family friend in my mind.
>>153238590I think the design is conceptually fine but it's drawn like shit.
>>153238621Schlubby was the exact word that came to mind even I saw him. Never would I have thought that - Rey always seemed suave and sleek and hot to me
>>153238590https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk1S9Z_TDvIthey did my dogga dirty.
>>153238590Bored now
rey's not fat. he's just really fluffy.
>>153238643It's also Coyote's world, I suspect that has something to do with it.
Has Annie fucked herself yet?
He keeps getting done dirty.
>>153241313He is all of that, this is some bullshit an insane girl's diseased mind came up with subconsciously.
>>153240068Maybe if he still had his old robot body. Nobody likes his uncanny synthetic face
>>153238590Renard the Pooh.
>>153238590Chill guy meme
I swear to god this better not be Tom trying to imply some kind of romantic vibe between these two. Cause he's been writing Rey as Annie's father figure this whole time, and it would be the height of hypocrisy to have pseudo-incest shit after killing off the selfcest. "Having sex with your dad is cool, but masturbation is wrong." - Tom Siddell
I really loved this comicBut for years now its just been pure...nothing. What happened to Tom's passion. Was the widespread negative reaction to his "nooooo Tony is a Good Guy actually nooo" cope arc really that hard on him. Did he really put that much of his own autism into that character.
>>153243033He was a starving artist, hungry for success. Then the patreon bucks rolled in giving him financial security, he got married, he moved from his shithole in the UK to a shithole in NYC to a nice quiet neighborhood in Rhode Island. He's happy and secure, the drive to make the best possible comic he can or else he's hungry and homeless hasn't been there for some time.
>>153238590Annie chose THIS over based Loup. No wonder Coyote got mad.
>>153242964This!! If there's one thing Gunnerkrigg Court has never indulged in, its vaguely incestuous father/daughter vibes.
>>153238590I want my money back!
>>153243033Tony genuinely caused nigh irreparable damage to the comic. I really hate that man.
>>153244092You should go kiss your dad.
>>153243033I'd say he started a narrative comic without, apparently, penciling out the full story arc towards a defined conclusion, so the comic ended up treading water and meandering through pointless plotlines. Many such cases. Gunnerkrigg's been going for over twenty years, if Tom was "serious" about it it should have been done and dusted by now. He must just like it as an idle hobby more than he cares about it as a creative work.
>>153244209He knew how it was ending when he started it, he just had a lot of fun along the way.
>>153239652why did he take the form of a skinny indian?
>>153239652he's surprised cause annie finally showed up
Gunnershit Fail?More like Gunnernever Finish
>>153244718They're called Native Americans now, anon
>>153244697Well, glad it was fun for him.In all serious though, this chapter is the most fun/investment I've had in the comic for a while. Actual characters I like actually doing new mysterious things and the prospect of things actually advancing at a decent speed while feeling like the plot is advancing
>>153244697It's not so much about how it's ending as when/whether it's ending. You either have a particular story in mind leading to a necessary conclusion, or you don't. If you don't it ends up like this.
>>153238590Literally third panel.
>>153238590oooh, coyote... they've got your goose. you're boned
>>153238590>WE GET IT, YOU LIKED THE ORIGINAL SHOW ENDING FOR EVANGELION!
>>153239257I was pretty happy when Paz was written out. I didn't hate her or anything, but the comic had spent a lot of time with such a nothing character just so Kat would be a lesbian with someone other than Annie.
>>153250915Well now she can be a lesbian with Annie.
>>153238590>Scheiße of life
>>153244209>without, apparently, penciling out the full story arc towards a defined conclusionThis has zombified most webcomics more than ten years old
>>153244209A decade ago an annoying chum kept begging me to read Berserk and I replied "when it's finished" for exactly these kinds of reasons. YOU ARE NOT WRITING AN EPIC THESE CHARACTERS ARE NOT SUBSTITUTES FOR HAVING ACTUAL FRIENDS YOU FUCKING FAGGOTEND YOUR STORIES OR END YOURSELF
>>153250634Zetsubou Sensei is so fricking good, man.
>>153251274But... Berserk is an epic, isn't it?And why would the genre even make a difference in how long a story is allowed to go on for?You can have short epics and long romance stories.
>>153251374In fact, now that I think about it, most traditional epics are absolutely dwarfed in length by most modern stories. Like, the Harry Potter series is most certainly longer than the epic of Gilgamesh or whatever. Your story can be as short or as long as you see fit.
>>153251422Epic is a signal of characteristic, not length.
>>153251433The anon I'm responding to complained about Gunnerkrigg Court's length
Anyone have thoughts on how Housepets! ended?Because it is in the same boat of 90% of readers going "how is this going to end".
>>153251484Never heard of it.
>>153244209>without, apparently, penciling out the full story arc towards a defined conclusion,Tom's always said he's had a planned ending and it's even his excuse for why he wrote out the two Annies. The issue is that he doesn't seem to have figured out how to get there fully from the beginning and it's resulted in a lot of meandering. Which was fine early on when the stories themselves on the way were interesting, but now they're... yeah.
>>153250915I thought Paz was cute as fuck but Tom clearly had no idea what he was doing with her really. She was barely a character and then she was just gone. Makes that one side comic he did with her feel really hollow now.
>>153250915THIS
>>153252066I think the issue is that he didn't revise any of it. He seems to be set on doing certain things which he's planned from the start and with how the story has evolved, a lot of them might have needed a few revisions, but I think he's sticking to his initial plans fairly strictly. This makes the story take longer, because he needs to set up those story beats more than he perhaps anticipated and in the worst cases it breaks the story by creating out of character moments or plot contrivances, like in the latest case with the witches being too retarded to capture annie and co and or kill Kat. He probably planned evil witches and that they should fail to kill Kat and that Annie and co got inside Zimmyworld and the witches would follow, but when it was time to actually write that, he might have run into problems with the witches being too weak or too powerful and zimmyworld being too easily accessible and things like that, perhaps because of Kat's established powers, which may have shifted from his original vision. Things like that have cascading effects in a story and unless the outline was planned ultra meticulously, it will not hold up once you actually write the story and will need to be revised along the way.The reason I think this is the case here is his comment on the norn chapter, that that chapter was something he was particularly excited to get to, as it was one of the first major plot points he had planned, but Kat acts incomprehensibly out of character in this chapter, to the point that she blatantly contradicts herself within the same chapter, which is probably due to a difference between the character that has been developed over the course of the story and the character she needed to have in that chapter in order to not derail the story completely.
>>153252243The contradiction I'm talking about is her losing sleep over a potential dead Annie in another timeline before meeting the Norns, then ignoring that idea completely after meeting them, even though nothing she's seen or been told confirming that there is no timeline with a dead Annie. If anything, her experiences with the norns reinforce or potentially even prove that there is a timeline where Annie is dead. Kat stops worrying about this immediately afterwards, even when confronted with yet another potential missing Annie timeline, when the shifted Annies are fused.
