The tour guide explained: because Lord Enma presides over Jigoku, it's not necessary to make him an offering of burning incense (it's hot enough in hell). Instead, the faithful offer bamboo scrolls - these are devotional scrolls with promises that the faithful will live virtuous, upright lives and commit no sinful acts that will land them in front of Lord Enma for judgement when they pass away.
Something I thought was very neat about temples in the Land of Dragons was how the back of the space was also utilized. This was common not just here but in other temples, Buddhist, Daoist, or otherwise that I visited. Behind the statue of Lord Enma is another, smaller devotional shrine. I'm not 100% sure who this is, but I believe it's an empress that was deified. As you can probably figure out from the context, she has become the guardian for children who have passed away and thus are not fit to stand judgement before Lord Enma.

>>153289420To some extent it's this: >>153289484To some extent it's just Usagi being paranoid, lol
>>153282797Gee, almost as if it's a trap!
>>153282815Oh you fuckers are dead.
>>153282820At least there's some semblance ofnself awareness.
>>153282841>Usagi returning the food with the bandits
>>153282851Aww, genuinely a pretty nice moment amidst the chaos.
>>153282903An UY story without bloodshed and a happy ending, well I'll be damned.
>>153282931...huh. And here I thought Usagi simply vanished into the night.
>>153282946So someone DID die, just behind the scenes.
>>153282990Fell for the oldest trick in the book.
>>153283002Rorschach pls.
>>153283018>>153283024Holy shit WHAT.
>>153283055Usagi had the nut of his fucking life in those bottom three panels.
>>153283080Is this the arc with the lowest bodycount in the series so far? Only one person died, which for this series is nothing short of a miracle.
A shame Kazehime bit it. We never got a meeting between her & Chizu.>They never have a moment where they're just shit talking about each other, from ninja skills, clans, looks and petty shit while Usagi wonders how the hell he got into this situation.
>>153283111Oh no, she's cute.
>>153283156Fuck it, I'd eat there too.
>>153284044>>153284053This sucks.
>>153283623>Jitte status: SHUT UP! SHUT THE FUCK UP!
>>153283210Oh SHIT. Usagi realized they're all already dead.
>>153283776>casually ruins the valuable painting which is the only thing that might keep Shima out of the temple
>>153290606Her name means "Princess of the air/wind."I wish we got more of her, but I also agree with the other anons who wondered what you would even do with Chizu But Airborne
>>153283270Usagi it's been three fucking months, what the fuck have you been doing to that arm where it hasn't healed by now? At this point it may as well be a permanent injury.
>>153291139>Usagi it's been three fucking monthsIt has?
>>153283289>>153283297FUUUUUCK
>>153291139that shit was shattered, kappa strength + a fucking rock, the muscles probably haven't all reattached to the bone>>153291179
>>153283306RIP Bat girl. You had such waifu potential.
>>153283345So he doesn't listen to his wife to spare the bat girl, yet he's more than willing to oblige his grandkids when it comes to shoehorning Kitsune everywhere?
>>153284276>a single humongous turnipMan, Stan can't get enough of this gag and that's good, because I love it too
>>153291139Listen, magic can only do so much. Usagi is right in that he's lucky his arm works at all since it was likely crushed to splinters by the kappa.
>>153283348Goofiest decapitation in the series so far, and that's saying quite a bit.
>>153284203>even Stan himself finds the rabbit's claims of being a pacific person ridiculous
>>153291139The first part of Kazehime isn't neccesarily set AFTER the kappa thing...maybe?
>>153291214Those are 3 months after their first encounter, theres no indication of whether Usagi found Kazehime before or after the kappa incident, for all we know its been like a week since he got his arm fixed.
>>153291265It's easy to tell your wife to shut up (and vice versa), but grandkids have the puppy-dog-eyes maneuver, which a grandpa is powerless against!
>>153284363That froggo is reeeeeal doubtful about Usagi.>bro is it even safe to sit here? I heard he killed like, 1400 guys
>>153284864>samurai, we didn't say suiseki, we said suiCIDE! We just want to give up!>shut up and dig!
>>153285099>Wonder if this is a story that's not happened yet or an early version of The HiddenAlmost certainly the former I think, because in the same letter column Stan alludes to a long spate of Ishida mysteries coming up and says he has to do some other storylines first that he's been putting off for too long. Given the publication delays and so on, it's possible that by the time he wrote that comment he had already drawn The Hidden; at the very least he already knew perfectly well it was coming down the pipe.Unfortunately I think these plans were probably all derailed by the switch to IDW, except that Homecoming might have been one of those storylines he'd been putting off. I don't know that Tengu War, for example, feels like something that was urgent to finally get out.
>>153291341>>153291364It was definitely after, Usagi says as much here here >>153283118.
>>153286980You know, now that you mention this, it's funny that his second wife's surname is>FUJII!
>>153291341>>153291364>>153291920I think it only mkes sense read the other way around – the second part of the story is a forward timeskip, then we go back to the present moment, Hell Screen and the upcoming two volumes take place, and a bunch more, then the second half of Kazehime. I base that on the facts that firstly, Usagi would never go three months without getting in deep shit, and secondly, the fall/winter simply isn't skipped, we see those seasons happen, so it would have to be a three-month skip followed by a six-month skip to put us in the exact same season of the next year, which makes no sense.
>>153286188This took a while to put together. Hopefully I didn't make any boneheaded mistakes on this one.
>>153292170kek
>>153283683>SAVE US EVIL PAINTING!
>>153284044Did Usagi's mother die in a similar way?
>>153291364read the comic
>>153287193I knew it! >>153284063
>>153286139Thank you for that very educational photo reportage. Also:>points at cock>see, it no longer is on fire!>>153288452Hehehe.
>>153284044>>153284053I know it's coming every year but I still can't stop myself from tearing up>>153285113>I can't think of anything she'd do that isn't covered by Chizu.>>153291127>what you would even do with Chizu But Airbornepic related
>>153293499If the Kazehime story had a 3 months long gap in the middle, with nothing happening in-between, then the entire universe breaks down. Pic related. To make it work, the next two books (threads) should be put in-between the first and the last meeting with the bat lady. It's a one-shot story, so we can wiggle it a bit. >but the arm still hurts after 3+ monthsEven with modern medicine it often takes more time to fully heal a broken arm. Depends how fucked it was before being magically fixed (and in Usagi's case, it looked not just broken, but absolutely shattered to pieces). He is extremely lucky there was magic involved and that, eventually, he fully recovers.
>>153294859We asked "what kind of story would you tell that isn't already in progress with Chizu?" You can't counter that by suggest "the ninja girl kisses Usagi just like Chizu did, but, like, she's upside down this time" because you're basically proving the point.
>>153294864>it takes more than 3 months to healIt's magic, Stan ain't gotta explain shit.
>>153294931I mean, she could've easily been some kind of rival to Chizu
>>153283480This murderer has gone too far, they ruined a perfectly good Go match!
>>153294931I was just funnin' Taking the question seriously I think Kazehime could be used one of two ways distinct from Chizu>loyal ninja recurring character that gives insight into how the low-rank ninja liveChizu has a lot of intra-clan drama and was always close to leadership. Kazehime could be a minor recurring character that shows how the grunts live. She'd likely die eventually since Hikiji sees them as expendable pawns but she could show up and tell Usagi to fuck off from a dangerous situation a few times before her inevitable tragic end. >she decides being a ninja sucks and leaves.Chizu is committed to the Neko for better and worse but Kazehime is enough of a blank that she could just leave the Komori because it's a miserable life. They'd probably try to kill her for defecting but unlike Chizu her merely being alive wouldn't be a direct threat to the leadership so she could realistically fake her death or something. It'd risk feeling derivative of Chizu and Zato-Ino's stories but there's definitely room for something interesting, and if nothing else a reminder that walking away from the bullshit is an option could be nice and make her a decent foil to Chizu. My silly idea was she could become a nun to escape. The habit could conceal her wings and she could use her flight to respond to emergency exorcism requests with great speed
>>153283594Sheesh, poor guy. I don't even blane him for wanting to destroy that shit.
>>153283606If Toshi is able to kill armed people while drunk how the fuck are you planning to take this dude in sober?

>>153283649Once again Usagi is a FOOL.
>>153283683General my ass. This dude's just a common bandit in armor.
>>153283689Now THIS is karma.
>>153283726Oh shit, honestly wasn't expecting Toshi to be in on this.
>>153283756The Hell screen didn't even save the original priests, why the fuck did he think it'd give HIM of all people mercy?

>>153283786>King Enma was literally guarding Buddha Pottery.
>>153295218the difference between general leading an army to sack a town for wealth/provisions and a bandit leading a gang to shakedown a town for wealth/provisions is, unsurprisingly, very small since out of work professional soldiers often become banditry if they don't get land to tend
>>153283875RIP that dude's shins.
>>153283961Lady none of this is new to him.
>>153286544Here's a version with everything but Roderigo removed, in case that's useful for someone.
>>153283994>>153284003It's both hilarious and horrifying how Tokage can go from goofy lil' friend shaped critters to Jurassic Park on a dime.

>>153284044FUCK.
>>153295386https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F86cYaCGywThanks anon, I was looking forward to your reaction to this story. So, on a scale of 0 to FEUDAL JAPAAAAAN, how would you rate it?
>>153295386Welcome to THE feudal japan
>>153284409Thanks OP. Man, what a sucker punch to the gut. Had to collect myself there for a moment.>>153295394Oh it's HARD Feudal Japan, but unlike the normal Bushido bullshit this feels like a tangible, logical sacrifice, which makes it sting so much more. Usagi was right, this woman is easily the nost noble person in this comic so far.
>>153287068Awesome stuff, drawanon.>filenameTbf, for this series that's an improvement.
>>153295112That makes me think, we've seen plenty of cats who aren't ninjas, but not a bat(or a mole for that matter). I wonder about the social stereotypes of Feudal Japan. If Kazehime was walking down the street, would everyone assume she was a ninja?
