Also it’s important to note, the fire nation was specifically targeting the air nomads in Aang’s time because they knew from the avatar cycle and Avatar Roku’s death that the avatar was there somewhere and that he was only a vulnerable child. They couldn’t have predicted him disappearing like he did but they clearly wanted to capture him and thus disrupt the balance to their favor. Hard to say exactly what the ancient earth kingdom people were planning, but knowing that the avatar of their time was also an air nomad, they may have had a similar idea. It does raise the interesting question of if any other of the four nations were almost wiped out at any point in their history. Probably some of them were but bounced back. Maybe there even are totally extinct cultures in the history of their world. It looks like the southern water tribe was pretty close to being wiped out by the time Aang was defrosted.
