After subjugating and almost annihilating the Dreamworld, Void left to go destroy other worlds but placed Arazu in charge of a small contingent of Nightmares to finalize the mass execution of the remaining Dreamkeepers. Nabonidus planned a coup though, stole Arazu's power, and assumed control, and has been running things for generations ever since, with the remaining Nightmares just falling in line with him. Nightmares beyond the Dreamworld can come and go as they please and per the old website, there's explicitly an infinite number of them who simply can't manifest en masse through Bralgu because the Dreamworld has a limit on how many Nightmares can gestate into it at once. Void himself was god knows where until Scuttler summoned him back for example.The main reason why Nabonidus never got his shit slapped earlier is because neither Void nor the Nightmare Archons were even aware that the Dreamworld yet lived, so he was allowed his little cosmic fief for a little while.
