Some fun facts about fugu:
>Fugu venom contains tetrodotoxin, which can be also found in various varieties of puffer- and blowfish, cone snails, and the ever-infamous blue-ringed octopus. It is a neurotoxin that causes total muscle paralysis, with the most common cause of death being unable to breath due to your lungs being too paralyzed to function. The toxin's effects hit within half an hour, and while there's no antidote even now, you can survive it provided you haul ass and get put on life support immediately until the toxin can run its course.

the tokugawa shogunate? not really. I mean, of course they couldn't rock the boat so much as to have every great lord turn on them, but they could rock the boat much more than any previous shogunate ever did. as to censorship specifically, it fluctuated with each shogun personally and their advisors, but it was a real thing.

Early shoguns (late 12th century to early 15th century) were in charge of military matters and of little else.
Tokugawa shoguns (early 17th century to mid-19th century) were in charge of most things, the emperor still handled some administrative duties and religious ceremonies, but the shogun kept everyone else under his thumb.
Not in a way where he could boss people out all the time, but everyone was kept malnourished and poor so they couldn't rock the shogunates boat and shogunate wanted to maintain an eternal status quo.

Ito is perfectly clear that he's going to have Nezumi crucified if they catch him. So yes, it's an absolutely preposterous double standard, especially since Nezumi helps the common people. This and Thief and the Kunoichi are where Kitsune's plot armor becomes absolutely intolerable, and that's why anons unlock the mysteries of seetheboxing whenever we reach this part. And remember, this shit was going on for *years* when it was originally being published. Half the stories in your favorite comic (new issue every other month! One trade a year!) were toothgrinding.

Ambroise Paré pretty much invented surgery in mid 1500s, then caused a major scandal in medicinal circles of europe by publishing a book about medicine, in French.
This was considered scandalous because up until that point medicine had been taught in latin across (civilized) parts of europe. Only folk language medical help came in form of folk remedies or from barber surgeons (blood letters).
So Paré publishing a book about how to heal arquebus wounds in French was unprecedented at the time.

Forgot to add, Ambroise also started the practice of stitching wounds, as well as using antibiotic salves to treat the wounds. Sure he didn't know germ theory, but he knew that if he treated a wound a certain way, it wouldn't get aggravated, infected and gangrenous.

>>
>>153313591
To answer the question a different way, I think you have to accept the box of medicines as a chambara convention; Usagi lives in a kind of amalagamated-Olde-Japan setting. The hanafuda cards Nezumi throws are an anachronism (western cards would not be outlawed for another forty years or so; at the time Usagi is set Japanese people played cards with Luso-Italian decks); Lady Maple the oiran is an anachronism (a tayu of her era would not wear a costume as elaborate as the one shown and the word oiran was not yet in use circa 1605; I think that guy linked to in a previous thread covers this in one of his Youtibe videos about Japanese prostitutes); the ninja are straight up nonsense, and so on. It all harks back to a kind of legendary past; it's sort of like how Arthurian Britain apparently has 15th century plate armor in the 6th century AD.

>How mighty was the shogun?
He was the de facto authority of the land, the authority from which the daimyo (literally 'big name', the feudal lords that ruled the land) derived their authority, either because they were in direct alliance with the house of Tokugawa as a vassal, junior partner, or cadet branch of the family, or if they were on the other side of the Battle Of Sekigahara, because the shogunate allowed them to survive as a matter of expedience.
Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, went further than his predecessor shoguns, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga, to concentrate power in the hands of his regime by never accepting the title of kanpaku, which was a rank granted by the government of the emperor in Kyoto. The important distinction to make here in this refusal is that Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi both derived their "shogunal" authority from the "kobu," or unified civil-military government of the emperor in Kyoto. Tokugawa made a clean break and said no, my shogunal authority derives power from itself, the "bakufu" literally 'tent government' of an army permanently deployed and in the field.

>>153315424
2/2 cont.
>Did he have anyone that kept him in check?
If you're asking 'did the shogun as a person have anyone that kept him in check?' The answer to that is a maybe, probably. The apparatus of state can't be held entirely by one person, and while the shogun's authority and decrees were absolute when issued to the public, there was lots of court intrigue in Edo castle to reach a decision, as you might reasonably infer.

But if you're asking the shogunate as a governmental body? Nope. They paid some lip service to the divinity of the emperor but Ieyasu broke with tradition by not even having some de jure paper title recognizing the temporal authority of the emperor. As for real challenges to the power of the bakufu, Nobunaga and Hideyoshi deserve most of the credit for clearing those out of the way so Ieyasu could eventually reap the rewards of a political landscape where his clan could dominate nearly uncontested. Now there was always the threat that something would unite the daimyos against the central government, and in history this did eventually happen with the events culminating in the Meiji Restoration in the late 1800s, but for 250 years the shogun reigned unchallenged, although this was a delicate balancing act between giving the daimyos enough autonomy within their domains that they would be content to serve as vassals of the shogun, and making sure they were sufficiently cowed to not seriously contemplate armed rebellion against Edo.

Nobunaga ground the wheat, Hideyoshi heated the oven so Tokugawa could eat the bread. I think I remember reading that, or something like it, somewhere.
Kind of wild the change of power between these three before it became solidified for so long under Ieyasu.

For me she wouldn’t be nearly as bad if she wasn’t also stealing from usagi and co. It’s one thing if she’s robbing nameless paupers for the sake of thievery hijinks, but when those same crimes are committed against her friends it comes off as callous. On top of that it’s further exacerbated by the fact she seems uncaring about it all, highlighted most in the one feat. chizu. It’s not enough to fix her, but at the bare minimum she needs to start treating her friends like actual friends

I never would've expected executioners to be so reviled. Like i expected them to be feared but not also looked down upon and kinda sorta shunned.
The healer/bonesetter aspect is also really interesting, especially consdering Frantz and probably many other executioners actually did it more than executing, and Frantz professed it was his real calling denied to him and his by some cruel twist of a fate and capricious margrave.
Also didn't realize the dead body touching stigma was as big in europe as japan, even as body parts were so widely sought after.

I think that makes her TOO nice honestly.
I think her original concept of "girl does thievery to get by" was fine, she just needs to
>not get away with everything all the time
>not take insane risks for no reason
>not steal from her friends
Those three things are the three pillars of why people dislike Kitsune IMO, and the infuriating thing is those three writing guidelines were actually followed in her early stories. She took a massive L in Noodles despite having a decent gameplan and gave Gen his purse back in Kitsune's Story.
>>
>>153320586
I bring it up a minimum of once a storytime, but for all well deserved criticism the netflix show gets, Flixune managed to do the 'lovable rogue' archetype well, just by toning down the thieving and making her risk-taking being in service of her friends and the world.
>>
>>153320641
I also liked that she beaned people in the head with her tops, Kitsune stopped doing that and it's a shame.
>>
>>153320725
Maybe Kitsune needs more fight scenes where she helps out Usagi and the boys.

It wouldn't FIX her, but it would be a step in the right direction. Maybe also have her put on a puppet show, and Usagi has a minor panic attack remembering the last time he was involved with both a fox and puppets.

If Kitsune repeatedly kept on saving Usagi's life it would explain why he is so lenient with her if it is out of a sense of life debt. Or even if just her first appearence had her notably manage to save him from certain death. I mean we saw that with Inazuma he takes it seriously.
>>
>>153320762
I'll go further. If she kept helping out in a bind, because she doesn't want to see her friends hurt, she could steal as many purses from Usagi as she wanted to. She would work fine as a character who cannot be trusted with your wallet, but whom you can trust with your life. As for now, she's mostly a burden.

Stan is deliberately teasing the possibility at minimum, by never having Nii be around when Nezumi shows up. But the timing is insanely tight for it to work in a few cases, Nii would have to whip on that ninja outfit like Superman a couple times.
>>
For the Nezumi & Nezumi mysteries, there's very few options if it comes to being a character that's shown and people in town. Nii can't be Nezumi from the eye issue, but he was conspicuously absent during the raid on the Bronze Madam where the Master was, and Nii as Ishida's trusted lieutenant could reasonably misdirect or hide evidence to "deal" with Ishida, so Nii = The Master is a possibility. The Chief being the Master feels too convenient and an anti-climax to the reader, big angry chief that you don't like and interferes with Ishida and Usagi is also the super secret big bad. Nii also would have had easy access to murder Daida in prison. My bet for Nezumi if it's someone we've seen is Ishida's wife. She has the cheek tufts, body shape and availability since Ishida's away from home whenever he runs into Nezumi so would unlikely to be noticed as missing. She'd also have a reasonable motive, she could have decided to take the law into her own hands, especially after her child's death and witnessing her husband's earlier corrupt bosses preventing justice.

Never touched upon to my knowledge, like some other Anons suggested she should have been adopted by Ishida

Usagi taking notes from Dr. House and figuring it all out at the last second.

Muro you had him on the ropes, why the fuck did you scream "HIYAH!"? You're facing off against a guy with ears so big they're part of his topknot FFS.

Bitch WHAT?! Why the fuck would they even do this!? They only risk being on the Shogun's shitlist pulling a stunt like that. Kitsune laughing it off is ACTUALLY OOC, she should be fucking horrified at the implications here.

I said it before, but it's painfully obvious Kitsune's just a writer's pet at this point. It feels like Stan was so desperate to give her a win here, that he came up with an ending that's just plain braindead.

>Oh no, Chaotic cards! Our one weakness!

Man, where is even a fraction of this effort when it comes to Kitsune?!

Real Lupin the 3rd energy with this guy. Also fuck off Usagi, this isn't even your job.

Missed opportunity to have the girl in the top right be Yuki with her mother (or aunt). It would've been a nice way to show her situation was resolved without needing to explicitly show it.
>>
>>153322765
Why doesnt Usagi settle down and become a cop?
>>
>>153312298
Usagi has jobbed to shit he shouldn't have before, but this is just embarrassing.

The audacity of this fucker.

Never doubt the tiny net. Usagi is probably rotting like a Papaya while you're cozy, living the good life!
>>
>>153312120
After the first meeting of Kitsune and Idhida ending in her fleeing town this part just seems stupid. I'd rather see them stealing his purse with a few coins and a note like "for the road", showing that Ishida let them steal it
>>
>>153322982
I actually want to see her help solve some murders, maybe save a life with her thieving/performance skills, then trot along her merry way with a sack full of gold stolen from a serial killer or something
>>153321113
I couldn't even decide on a tone, if it was going to be a straight horror story or a comedy

>My bet for Nezumi if it's someone we've seen is Ishida's wife.
They would know it was a woman and wouldn't call Nezumi a man. Also, (minor spoiler for storytime later today) I'm pretty sure Ishida calling on Nezumi from home in The Hidden makes this unfeasible.
>>
>>153323125
Why would they know? Nezumi is covered from head to toe, and no description is made regarding Nezumi's voice is made. Women disguising themselves as men is a thing throughout history. I don't recall anything about the Hidden interaction making it impossible for Haruko to be Nezumi. There's also only two possibilities I see: Nezumi's an entirely separate character with no secret identity, or it's her. Nii would need to change clothes, apply makeup to hide his eye ring AND get a nose job within seconds to be Nezumi, and he's the only other candidate in town that I can recall.
>>
>>153323263
>no description is made regarding Nezumi's voic
No shit, but it's clearly implied by the fact that Usagi and Ishida both talk to him extensively and call him a man that his voice is male. Do you really expect Stan to As You Know, Bob a thing like that?
>>
>>153323287
Yes. I'd like you to put forward who else it could be besides "other". Which is a possibility to be sure. But Nii is far less likely than Haruki, he's physically too different.

>TFW no clusterfuck story that involves Ishida, Nezumi, Kitsune, Usagi, Stray Dog & Gen against a powerful group of assholes who get taken down hard
>It ends with the bosses dead and Kitsune getting the sack....
>Until she opens the bag and a note from Nezumi
>"I respect the fact a girl needs to do what she can to get by but I can tell you wouldn't mind helping others despite the face you put up."
>It's found out the assholes were also threatened the orphanage Stray helps out and the cash they lifted would cover their costs for a long while

*Haruko

I think it's notable that she's not moral but she is superstitious
