I thought pic related was a complete bore and look unappealing.
>>153314035I feel like that’s a fairly common opinion.I’d be more unpopular to say that Bakshi’s work as a whole is very mediocre at best which is my opinion.
>>153314035that is the consensus on the bakshi lotr film.it's incredibly bad by like any conceivable metric.
I like The Hobbit
>>153314035Completely valid opinion. Almost everything by Bakshi is fugly. The Japanese Hobbit has poor animation too, but its elevated by its aesthetics and presentation. American animation very often has no sense of aesthetics.
Why is this dead?

>>153314035Yeah, rotoscoping is always ugly and Bakshi is a fucking hack
>>153314035>Unpopular opinion thread>Look inside>Mainstream opinion
>>153316436>Bakshi is a fucking hackI noticed a pattern where he always was blaming low budgets or meddling producers for how his movies turned out, and then I'd find out animated films from Japan or Don Bluth productions had smaller budgets and looked 10 times better than his movies. At some point I realized he was blaming others for his own incompetence.
Is Wizards good/worth watching? I liked Coonskin, and the animation in American Pop, but the story, or at least main character kinda ruined it for me. That type of beatnick proto-hippie whatever might just be a personal bugaboo.
>>153316436Retard
>>153316602wizards is mostly decent, very meandering and episodic which doesn't fit an "epic quest" style movie, has a kind of rushed to fuck third act that at least closes with a good ending. Like everything bakshi it's uneven as fuck but it's worth at least one watch.
>>153314741>Japanese HobbitYou mean the Rankin/Bass Hobbit. It was animated by Topcraft in Tokyo but the concept art and character designs were made by Lester Abrams who later did the same for Return of the King and the Last Unicorn as well.
>>153314035Someone in the Gen13 thread was talking about how unfortunate the adult animated movie situation is, and I was wondering if things would be better had we got more or less the Peter Jackson LoTR trilogy we know but following the prior animated effort. Or if the YA movies that came out took after Akira. The issue remains unlike Japan where actors and VAs share celebrity fine, it's pretty obvious Hollywood wants celebrity to be faces, not voices. So the award groups and critics would likely still have underplayed it.It's a shame really because while I love what we got in terms of cinematography I still think a LotR trilogy animated with the finesse of something like Vampire Hunter D would have achieved even greater visuals.
>>153316534its not really him specifically its more a cultural issue with how we treat work that makes it so the same amount of money in a jap animation will simply result in better product than the same amount in a western production
>>153314035>Unpopular OpinionRotoscoping is kino and looks better than modern western animation
>>153316602Wizards objectively isn't good, but it it's conceptually interesting. I think people should at least watch some of it to understand what it's about.
>>153317202Lol whatever you wanna believe, Bakshi.
>>153316602I like it purely for the psychedelic post-apocalypse fantasy aesthetic. It could really benefit from a miniseries the same way Dark Crystal did.
>>153316602Wizards is a'ight
>>153314035wow cool sword
Why no more replies?
>>153314035It's also a matter of taking what you can get. My cousins are huge Lord of the Rings fans and they swore by this VHS as kids as it was the only film depiction it had. Once the Jackson trilogy came out they rightfully forgot about the Bakshi one.
>>153316619Faggot
>>153321811But enough about you.
>>153314035It's slightly better than Jackson's TT but worse than his FotR.
>>153316927>how unfortunate the adult animated movie situation isThere was an adult animated film being made by the creators of Ferngully that got cancelled b/c "adults don’t watch cartoons"
>>153321753Lol I dunno
>>153316927>a LotR trilogy animated with the finesse of something like Vampire Hunter D would have achieved even greater visuals. They never would have wasted time/money on this because adults don't want cartoons. Especially not back in 2001.
>>153323346I was thinking about posting the same thing. No way that would have made a big impact in the late 90s/early 00s.
>>153314035test
>>153316534Don Bluth has said a bunch of times that what 1970's Disney said are "too expensive" or "too hard" actually are actually quite easy to do with some planning. If you have these countless works made in Japan that are all doing this stuff by default, it obviously isn't actually "expensive". That's just an excuse. It's a skill issue.
>>153314035I thought Fire and Ice was more fun and looked less like the hot mess that was LOTR: Part One.
>>153323921wdym "Wrong"?
>>153314035Bakshi is very acquired taste and I think it is perfectly valid to dislike his stuff.>>153316602I personally love Wizards, but it is like all Bakshi films; a complete mess. I recommend to give it a shot at least. Also Mike Ploog and Ian Miller art in it is amazing.
>>153326487That's part of the appeal of Bakshi's works for me, how messy they are. Wizards fits that bill too
>>153323500You're good, bro
>>153329545Even as the optimistic daydreaming anon who made the comment about Twilight in Aeon Flux/Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust style, I get and already sort of knew what he means.I said the award and movie people are the culprits, but honestly overall there's just this complex about animation. The unfortunate influence is most evident in how Mamoru Oshii's thoughtful anime adaptation of the lighthearted GitS manga still turned out a master work of visuals and writing that has impressed and inspired a lot of film makers, yet the live action adaptation of that very movie was disappointing and gladly forgotten
Here’s a real unpopular opinion: My Life as a Teenage Robot sucks and any nostalgia for it is carried entirely by the gooners who want to fuck the robot.
>>153330108Wrong.
>>153326487Wizards is an experience that should be enjoyed with friends and/or high or drunk.
>>153314035Legend starring Tom Cruise was a beautiful and good movie. Fight me.
>>153332379Is that an animated movie?
>>153321753Why you lie? There've been PLENTY more replies since then
Medieval Fantasy >>>> Literally any other genre
>>153335123Idk, I think sci-fi's pretty cool
>>153335123Sorry, but sword and sandel epics are better
