Ain't it kinda sad how quickly DreamWorks abandoned hand-drawn animation? I'd argue they were getting pretty close to matching Disney Renaissance-era quality in terms of visuals
>>153323515The Renaissance had essentially already ended by the turn of the millennium, and even Disney didn't exactly know what to do. It turns out Toy Story was the future all along.
>>153323515dreamworks was better than the disney’s renaissance films - in terms of technical skill
>>153323515Sinbad grossed 26 million domestically. Why would they keep making 2D movies afterwards?
>>153323712Thats like some troglodyte saying:>our brand of car failed that means cars aren't the future, also the steam engine is bad and so is boiling water for energyNo just make better cars.
>>153323606>and even Disney didn't exactly know what to doTry to bank on more princess movies instead of Brother Bear?
>>153323515DreamWorks didn't submit this movie to the academy for Best Animated Feature
Shark Tale was the first CGI DreamWorks movie to have the character animation crew from the 2D movies. Antz, Shrek and Shrek 2 had the character animation crew from Pacific Data Images
>>153323515Yeah, it's sad how they all jumped wagon to 3D animation. Not that 3D is bad, but it's sad to see how hand-drawn movies became practically extinct here in the west.I do understand from a practical standpoint though. 2D animations is indeed very expensive and time consuming, but, to me, it is one of the highest forms of art in terms of skill and coordination needed for it to work properly... when it does happen though, it just completely mogs everything else.
>>153324026>it is one of the highest forms of art in terms of skill and coordination needed for it to work properly... when it does happen though, it just completely mogs everything else. I could watch this sequence on repeat forever... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU-NDxiWz40
There's a reason why the 2D DreamWorks movies look so nice. They're basically Amblimation movies made under Katzenberg' supervision and in a different country. It's the same crew of people.
>>153324175>"This was the start of a fabulous run in animation. I went from Dublin to London, where I worked at Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation on American Tail: Fievel Goes West, We’re Back!, and Balto. They were fun years. When Amblimation moved to Los Angeles, and Dreamworks was formed, I went too and got to experience the company’s heady beginning days, working on The Prince of Egypt, El Dorado, Spirit, and Sinbad"

>>153323515I just want Illumination to do a 2D movie or show since they just proved they could do it
>>153327322>>153327372Oh no...
A bit unrelated but what did you guys think of this https://youtu.be/xOXolSQcEb4?is=SbJfoNMTvWwCpgZR
>>153327706p. cool
DreamWorks almost went bankrupt in 2003, and not just because of the failure of Sinbad. They had a bunch of live action flops that year (Biker Boyz, Head of State, Anything Else, The Cat in the Hat)
>>153327372I like that the gay/tranny characters are always brown now.
2D DreamWorks was horny
>>153323749Financially speaking, this is more like suggesting that someone keep trying to make their horse-and-buggy company work when everyone else is doing gangbusters producing automobiles. Hand-drawn animation had been the standard for the industry for decades, and it was rapidly becoming clear that 3D animation was the future. Now of course, this is a little different, because I certainly agree that hand-drawn animation has artistic merits that make it worth producing. But you can't seriously believe that this art-form which had been around since the 30s and was being outperformed at every turn (again, financially) was some "wave of the future."
>grosses 268 million domestically>critically acclaimed (Roger Ebert gave it a perfect score)>wins the inaugural Best Animated Feature academy award>second animation movie to get an academy nomination for Best Screenplay (Toy Story was the first)>sells extremely well on DVDThere was no turning back for 2D after this
>Prince of Egypt >Road to El Dorado >Spirit>SinbadTruthfully the only one that could rival Disney was Prince of Egypt
>>153323515The problem is that pretty much everything that can be done with hand drawn animation has been done. There's literally no more worlds to conquer with hand drawn animation that a computer can't do faster and cheaper.
>>153331551It's a shame El Dorado bombed, the director said he had plans for a whole series of 'The Road To' movies with Miguel Tulio and Chel going on a new adventure in each film. Like the old pulp adventure movies that inspired Road To El Dorado.
Antz is so kino
>>153331574>The problem is that pretty much everything that can be done with painting has been done. There's literally no more worlds to conquer with paints and canvas that a camera and film can't do faster and cheaper.OK.
>>153324026>is indeed very expensive and time consumingThis is blatantly false though. On average, theatrical-quality 3D is more expensive than theatrical-quality 2D.>>153330750>"wave of the future."It's not about the future, regular audiences don't give a shit about the technique as long as the movie looks fun. If technique was the big draw then people would've flocked to see Lightyear over Demon Slayer
>>153323515>2026 >STILL using Sinbad as the scapegoat for why DreamWorks abandoned hand-drawn feature animation Get new material, bro.
>>153333157whhoa
>>153323515when you think about it, its kinda fucked how theatrical 2d animation died so quickly into the 21st century
>>153330615yes and wasn't it amazing?
>>153323515>>153333157Eris is oh so sexy!!
>>153323515For what it's worth, I appreciate DW's attempts at using adult leads in their films again. A family-friendly film shouldn't HAVE to star kid leads
>>153334681It is, but think about it: outside of Disney and Bluth, name some good American 2D movies. You might bring up Iron Giant or Heavy Traffic, but that pool dwindles real fast once you get to shit like Rover Dangerfield or Quest for Camelot. Pixar, Blue Sky, and DreamWorks succeeded because two of them were run by tech nerds and one of them was run by a Disney president. The stories of most 2D films were stuck copying Disney, it wasn't until TV adaptations like Rugrats or Beavis and Butthead when styles started to shift.
