>longest CGI movie ever (at the time)Square wasn't playing around
>>153331735I miss pretty looking bad movies like this. The story's a mess but the visuals are beautiful.
>>153331735It basically destroyed them as a company and we're still suffering from it.
>Shrek (may 2001): 83 minutes without credits>Spirits Within (july 2001): 99 minutes without creditsDreamWorks had nothing to brag about in that aspect
>>153331735I know I've seen this movie but I don't remember what it's about. Something about a plant?
>>153331982Basically, there is an alien ghost invasion after a meteor hit the Earth. The humans need to develop a weapon against the ghosts by finding a bunch of souls that can counter the alien ghosts, a plant was one such soul but there were others.
>Chrono series and Xenogears 2 died for this shitand the worse part was losing Sakaguchi because he couldn't live up his Hollywood simp dream like Kojima.Christ
Why is it called Final Fantasy if it has nothing to do with any Final Fantasy game?
>>153331735I remember the bloopers and one of them had a pipe through a character's head.
>>153332435I remember the Thriller easter egg
>>153332346It actually has a lot to do with Final Fantasy, with its plot resembling an RPG "collect the crystals" quest. Also it has the Lifestream from FF7, and the scifi elements are found in FF7 itself. The movie trips up by setting the plot on Earth, and people think that the term 'fantasy' demands knights, wizards, and so forth. The film doesn't deviate from any of the franchise's founding ethos, chief of which that the franchise is an anthology.
>>153332339Good, Chrono Cross barely works as a sequel and there was no need to keep milking the story.
>>153331735>>153332505The problem with this movie? While visually stunning, there is mostly talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, seriously that what they mostly do. Talking. Sakaguchi, while great with games, this movie proves he is no film maker. I mean look at the trailer, it looked great! The movie didn't deliver. If they wanted this to be a success, they should have hired an actual movie director. Even a Japanese one at least they would know what they're doing. This movie also cancelled FF Unlimited. Don't care what anyone says I loved that show.
>>153332346>Why is it called Final Fantasy if it has nothing to do with any Final Fantasy game?In all fairness at this point Final Fantasy games have barely anything to do with Final Fantasy games.
>>153332857Don't pretend that there weren't three action sequences. That's about the same as most movies.
>>153331735>Let's make a BattleStar Galactica / Starship Troopers ripoff>No one would care>Huh........what can we call it then.>Hum, I dunno, there's this game called Final Fantasy seven or something btw.>Ok, let's call it that>But it doesn't have to do jackshit with it.>Meh, let's throw some Illusion of Gaia reference in one scene.I swear to God, I rented this movie once, me and my cousin watch it, we BOTH, HATED IT, SO DAMN MUCH, I only ever played Final Fantasy 3/6 once on SNES with my cousin as a rental and even then cousin emulated the games on his crummy 386 on soundless Zsnes, and even then we both knew that wasn't Final Fantasy.
>>1533317I get what you mean, no other CGI movie looked like it before or even since for awhile, specially NOT in a america, the way the characters were modeled, did not looked like what you see in the humans in Shrek.
>>153332505No it didn't Tranny Smith, shut the fuck up already!
>>153332867That won't happen after X2>>153332903Square did the movie themselves, but it really feels like they just wanted to be it's own unique new IP but had no confidence so they slapped their famous IP name on it and shove in a couple of references that weren't meant to be there, it's like Lords of Shadows actually.
>While Square ruled out any chance of a sequel to The Spirits Within before it was even completed, Sakaguchi intended to position Aki as being the "main star" for Square Pictures, using her in later games and films by Square, and including the flexibility of being able to modify aspects such as her age for such appearances. Ming-Na said that she would be willing if asked to continue voicing Aki. Aki only made one appearance outside of the film; in 2002, she appeared in a demonstration video that Square Pictures made to present to the Wachowskis before developing Final Flight of the Osiris for The Animatrix. The short film, appearing in the DVD's bonus content and featuring her with a slightly modified design, shows her acrobatically dueling a robot from the Matrix setting. Shortly afterwards, Square Pictures was closed and absorbed into Square, which ceased using the character
>>153332903It has nothing to do with Battlestar Galactica (especially since the 2004 remake hadn't happened yet) or Starship Troopers.
>>153331735My dad loved that movie.
>>153331735It's still by far the most expensive Japanese movie ever made. The biggest flop as well. Not sure it's /co/, though.
>>153331735Square are some god tier CGI artist but shit at everything else.
>>153333016Keep in mind this is also a stealth Sharkfag thread, so take it as a grain of salt. Spirits Within does look like a live action movie, but it's animated in CG. Now the Advent Children movie on the other hand......
>>153331913We get it, nigga, you hate Shrek. Do you need to bring it up in every goddamn thread? Fuck me rolling, the autism of this board sometimes.
>>153333239Why do you defend it every thread?
>>153333016>Japanese movieSquare Pictures was headquartered in Honolulu Hawaii, which was a not insignificant part of its production costs. It was an American studio owned by a Japanese company, which was an important distinction.
>>153333251I don't, but it's hilarious that you're chimping out about something unrelated to this thread because of YOUR autism.
>>153333479Yu Yu Hakusho is a top 3 Toonami anime
>>153332956>but it really feels like they just wanted to be it's own unique new IP but had no confidence so they slapped their famous IP name on itIt was made by Hironobu "mr. Final Fantasy" Sakaguchi. He always imagined 'The Spirits Within' as a Final Fantasy entry.
>>153331793sames
>>153333439Dude, I wouldn't say it's wrong to say it's an American movie as well, but come on, it's basically a Japanese movie. It's based on FF, directed by Sakaguchi, the cinematographer was Jap, some of the producers were Japs, made by a Japanese company, and they still suffer from it
>>153332339The Chrono series died because it got a real shitty sequel. And Xenogears has always been shit and I'm tired of hearing about that extremely shitty game about its schizo shit skin main character and I hope the creator and his wife of that filth dies soon.
>>153332857>While visually stunning, there is mostly talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talking, and talkingWe get it, you're a dopamine addict.
>>153333037It's still amazes me how they manage to avoid the uncanny valley with the realistic faces and surprisingly realistic hair and wind animation. Though if you look close enough you can see where the animators went "fuck it, good enough" like how they have as many characters as possible with fully covered faces or helmets that cover everything except the mouth, physics being just a suggestion and how they make liberal use of special effects to mask the small details
>>153331735I've never played Final Fantasy. How accurate of an adaptation was this?
>>153338229Final Fantasy is nothing but unconnected stories in different worlds with shared monsters, magic, and a guy named Cid. I don't remember the movie having any of that but maybe something.
>>153338229I can assure you that there are indeed spirits within Final Fantasy titles
>>153332339Big diff is Kojima stuck to video games while Sakaguchi didn't.
