"Clayface tells the terrifying descent into hell of a promising Hollywood actor who has become a monster driven by revenge. An intense story that explores the loss of identity and humanity, the ravages of toxic love and the dark side of scientific ambition."

pretty sure it's a prequel, though Gunn also confirmed Clayface didn't die in CC

My guess is he doesn't have control over it until after destroying his relationships and committed a series of horrible murders...at which point he'd be more likely to use his power to evade capture and engage in general supervillanry.

in the comics the reason is because everyone stops hiring him. they don't know he can transform, but whenever he auditions for a role they view his performances as soulless.

i'm guessing that's why mike flanagan is trying to do a whole analogy of clayface representing AI in this film
>>
This feels like the sorta movie you make like 20 movies into a cinematic universe and not as the 3rd. Sony doing villain solo movies didn't work, Joker 2 was a massive bomb etc... I don't see this working
>>
>>153344816
sony is completely inept at doing comic book movies and joker 2 didn't work because the director sucks

im not saying clayface is going to be good, but might as well go into this without any biases and be pleasantly surprised if it is good
>>
>>153344816
Imagine blaming Joker 2 on the fact that it was a solo movie and not the rape lol
>>
>>153344816
At least Clayface is actually connected to the rest of the universe, and with the constrictions of The Batman looming over the DCU, having a smaller film introduce this version of Gotham isn't a bad idea.
Besides that, having Clayface be one of the first films does help to sell the initial promise of this franchise: unlike the MCU, the films will be allowed to vary in tone and genre.
>>
>>153342042
Basil didn't because he liked being a monster and Matt didn't becaue he's not an actor in the comics
>>
>>153344938

>>
>>153344957
it also makes the world feel more "lived-in" as opposed to gradually building to a super world like the MCU. rather than Iron Man kickstarting an age of heroes, we're already placed in a world familiar with superheroes. smaller projects on various villains and heroes is a great idea for that

The MCU has already done horror projects, so DC is once again late to the party on this shit.
>>
I haven't paid attention to whether they want to tie this into the Patterson films or whatever the fuck James Gunn is doing, but I like the tone so I hope it's the former. Gotham should be weird and creepy, and this allows them to inject more sci-fi and supernatural elements that effect so much of the rogues gallery. That was missing from the first film.
>>153344816
Joker 2 didn't work because it spit in the fans' faces. If Clayface tries to be genuine about making an interesting take on the character it should be alright.

Feige retconning the TV shows out of continuity killed the MCU for me. It really felt like a fully fleshed out world, with Agents of SHIELD being the glue that connected to everything. Then it felt empty.

I'm with you. People criticized Superman 2025 for already having more "developed" stuff like Lex and his inter-dimensional portal technology but I think jumping right into it was the smart way to go. Not to mention WB probably doesn't want to risk having to "build up" a universe from scratch just to have it crash on them again before it goes anywhere.

>Feige retconning the TV shows out of continuity killed the MCU for me
outside of the first season of daredevil the TV shows were complete ass

>>
>>153351114
It's Gunn's DCU. Pattison Batman is too grounded unfortunately. Also we can have various tones for the DCU. That's kinda the whole point and contrast between Gotham and Metropolis
>>
>>153340294
This feels like something that should be in the Battinson timeline rather than the mainline DCU
>>
>>153351402
Literally everything post Endgame does not matter anymore. Disney behind closed doors, and everyone you ask in the industry, acknowledges phases 4 and 5 were failures. Reports even say they never wanted to ship out Cap 4 or Ironheart, but had to. Openly joked about it at parties too. They're rereleasing Endgame in theaters with newly shot footage to "Better segue into Doomsday". That's the death kiss of the past 5 or 6 years of failure right there.
>>153351505
It's similar to Invincible, Venture Bros, or Dispatch. I get wanting to introduce casuals to shit, but just embracing a superhero world has its benefits. We all know Superman, so it made sense just to jump in a fleshed out world. Batman has that luxury too. However Flash, and a new WW, could benefit from new origin films
>>
>>153342042
Looking normal is an exercise for Clayface, it's not his default appearance. He's prone to anger, and when agitated the "act" can slip
>>
>>153352270
The Battinson timeline should be mainline DCU
>>
>>153352270
>>153352406
Pattison is too grounded
>>
>>153352637
Kinda grounded, but I think you could transition to something more fantastical over time. A horror movie like Clayface seems like a good way to make that transition. The circumstances of his transformation may not be realistic, but his reaction to it can be grounded.
>>
I wonder if that one shot was inspired by this scene from Samsara, the 'clay face performance. Seems similar doesn't it?

>>153344816
The problem with Sony was that they turning villains into generic anti-heroes when only Venom and Morbius fit into that and choosing characters like El Muerto or Madame Web.
>>
>>153344816
It's not really just a sony thing. The whole "Dark Universe" thing from Universal really shit the bed too. Everyone remembers the over the top mummy movies with brendan frasier. Nobody thinks about the tom cruise mummy. MCU was sheer luckshitting, landing just the right hits at just the right timing.
I agree about Clayface though. At the bare fucking minimum, they need to go back and make a way better trailer. Right now you can't even tell what the fuck the movie's about unless you already know the character.

qrd? I never watched AOS as it felt like low-budget slop and last I heard they were introducing Inhumans to segue into their own show and we all know how that went
I'm not saying low-budget itself is bad because the Netflix shows had that too and yet Daredevil is prime television, but AOS didn't have that same vibe for me. I'd love to hear about its worldbuilding or how it connected everything together

Joker 2 didn't work because it was bad qualitatively. Retards completely fucking missing the point of the first film and then being angry that the second film also did the same thing was not the issue.
>>
>>153350456
Gotta disagree there. The MCU flirts a bit sometimes with different genres, but overall they're just coats of paint before ultimately devolving into the common capeshit tropes.
>>
>>153352270
Iirc it did start as part of the Battinson universe before being transfered into the DCU continuity.
>>
>>153351505
>>153352276
I agree but I hate this approach with Lanterns. We’re just starting the universe with a young Superman to boot but Hal is already old and on his way to being replaced/killed in his first project.

If The Brave and the Bold ends up being like it's initial pitch we're also looking at an older Batman. However it's been said the film has changed quite a bit since it's announcement so who knows.
>>
>>153354169
give the overarching thematical similarities between Wonderman, Loki Season 2, and Winter Soldier
>>
>>153355604
Wonder Man is really one of the few MCU projects that doesn't devolve into the franchise's formula. Outside of that, a lot of the projects sell themselves as tapping into other genres but still rely on big final action pieces and don't allow for a unique style throught the film. Like sure, Winter Soldier has homages to political thrillers, Ant-Man to heist films and Black Widow to spy movies, but callimg them full on genre films is disingenous.
>>
Everything you listed is exactly what separates actual prestige television from whatever else is out there pretending it’s “deep.”

These MCU projects are doing something people still weirdly refuse to admit out loud in the fact that they’re not just superhero content anymore, they’re structurally mature, thematically dense narratives that actually respect intelligence and how their audience matured past the trash that was the infinity saga. DC, on the other hand, keeps getting treated like it’s profound for repeating the same surface-level edginess and calling it philosophy. It’s retarded.

These things (Idk about winter solider because I haven’t watched it, I don't care about Bucky.) are doing the heavy lifting here. It’s not just “good for Marvel” anymore, it’s legitimately one of the most conceptually ambitious things the genre has produced. It’s not trying to be dark, it just is because it understands what it’s actually talking about. That’s what people miss when they reduce the modern MCU to capeshit discourse. They lack the comprehension and intelligence to get it.

Unlike DC which tries too hard, the MCU has clearly evolved past the Infinity Saga era into something that’s actively growing with its audience instead of freezing them in a perpetual childhood.

If Clayface ends up being the big DC answer to that (which it won’t, that’s the fucking truth) , fine. We’ll see. But right now it feels like it’s trying to compete in a conversation it already lost the vocabulary for.

They're in a odd spot because Gal Gadot's Wondy was popular, but her last movie didn't do well and they shitcanned a female director because she was insulting the Warner execs' notes. Thus they wanted to do a show without Wonder Woman to still use her world but
...not her to avoid another casting shitstorm like with Henry Cavill getting replaced.

>>
>>153365908
The BTAS episode is actually what this movie is mainly inspired by based on what Gunn has said
>>
>>153344816
All the Sony villain movies sucked because they had no purpose, they only existed to make money using the spiderman IP without actually using spiderman. Also they were just soulless and everything about them was completely raped by studio execs.

This movie cost 40 million to make, a capeshit movie with a 40 million dollar budget is insanely cheap. Even if this movie flops with 100 million... It already doubled it's budget and more.
Also clayface will actually have a purpose, it'll introduce us to gotham for the eventual Batman movie and it was completely creator made with basically no studio intervention at all. It's a movie that someone had a vision wanted to make and got the free reins to make a fucking body horror film using a Batman villain.

In the comics there's like 4 or 5 clay faces and they're all convoluted messes and basically just fucking terrible. Clayface is one of those villains like Mr Freeze that were complete dumpster fires until BTAS came in and actually made them into competent characters.
