We had He-Man, we had Thundarr, we had Galtar, now it's time for a Blackstar thread!Pro tip: he's not black, he's (probably) American Indian. But he is a star. And precedeted He-Man by several years. >John Blackstar is an astronaut from Earth, stranded on the planet Sagar after his spacecraft was swept into a black hole, taking him to an ancient alien universe. On Sagar, Blackstar allies himself with the Trobbits, the shape-changing Klone, the "dragon-horse" Warlock, and Mara the Enchantress. Blackstar and his allies oppose the Overlord, who seeks to take over Sagar.

You can watch the complete 13-episode series on YT in pretty good quality:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL22W8dv5FfqWd06NswJMaI3kU2h7t5ziM
>>153346713>preceded He-Man by several yearsFor example, this Amber lady in Blackstar eventually became The Sorceress in He-Man.
>>153346852There is nothing more entertaining than spotting reused assets between filmation series. Their ghostbusters show features a ton of recolored groovy ghoulies characters under new names.
>>153346720I like that the elf guy could become a rhino. I wish the toyline had reflected that better. Then again even the toyline was pretty late to the party.
>>153346952Ha! That's kekworthy for sure but my favorite part is watching old shows with weird characters and realizing: "Hey, that's Optimus Prime! That's Starscream!", ie, recognizing VAs from far more famous shows.
>>153346713What's his dragon's name?
>>153346987That 's Warlock, actually a character of mid-importance. >Warlock – A winged, green equine-like dragon mount ridden by Blackstar, which he called a "dragon-horse". He is highly intelligent and agile in flight and is able to breathe fire like all dragons where the fire breath doesn't affect the dragon-horse bit in his mouth.
Had a decent babe in the form of Mara the Enchantress although she always gave me the feel of a violet negress for some reason. There's too little rule 34 of her.
>>153346986If you want another GB example, they had petter cullen playing a robot ghost gorilla. Weirdly ominous considering the direction Beast Wars took.Frank Welker's always the easiest to spot in most 80's toons. He's either always the bad guy or the doofy sidekick.
Had a baller Kirby-esque villain too. >>153347067A robot ghost?!? There's a combination you don't see every day.
>>153347332Overlord looked alot more Kirby-esque than Gemini. Kinda funny that Alan Oppenheimer (Skeletor) voices him too considering the visual disparity. >a robot ghost!?A robot ghost GORILLA! The entire filmation GB series was batshit like that. They had future ghosts for crying outloud.
>>153346713I always considered this the last gasp of classic Filmation. He-Man just didn't feel the same.
>>153347962Well, the animation in Filmation shows was mostly ass and the backdrops not much better but they did have good story ideas and character concepts.
>>153346713The backstory sounds really old school like something from John Carter times.
>>153349383lol, that filename. Probably because the trobbits ran a train on them when they got blackout-drunk.
>>153350509I had this toy
>>153350582I'm so sorry. I'm here for you if you need to trauma dump.
>>153347962I unironically liked Filmation's Superman. He was surprisingly quippy and wise crack-y.
Who owns the rights to this IP? I know Filmation made it but they've been bought, sold and passed around so many times .
>>153350824I think it's Paramount Skydance. They own everything now.
>>153346713wow cool sword
>>153348594People shit on HB a lot considering their competition, DePatie–Freleng and Filmation, HB animation seems to look better. I'll say Filmation does have great backgrounds in He-Man.
>>153346713>Pro tip: he's not blackHe was supposed to be but the network wanted him 'not black'
>>153347046she got a wide head
>>153352141Filmation's peak was the Flash Gordon TV movie, and the first season of the TV show
>>153350853>>153350824It's Universal. Classic Media bought the Filmation IP library, then Dreamworks bought them, and Universal bought Dreamworks.>>153354027Too many people sleep on Filmation Tarzan these days
>>153353063Proof? Is there a Filmation documentary that one could watch to get details about their show?
>>153348594In other words, a writer-driven cartoon.
>>153354027This is true.
>>153354027>>153355497>All those original reels trashed and lost to timefuck you hallmark
>>153352104You can see alot of the ground work for their take on He-man being laid here, The power sword halves, the whole astronaut thing with Marleena, even the silly kid appeal sidekicks in the trobbits. Part of me wishes we could get a MOTU cartoon based off the minicomics.
>>153346713>ThundarrIs there any free site to watch the HQ version of this series?Actvid/mu4free does not have it, wcostream only has LQ.
>>153356952TubiIf you dont have access to Tubi then importing and ripping the DVDsis your best bet. Otherwise enjoy the dozens of 20+ yr old TV rips.
>>153356992There is a blu-ray release.The show is on Amazon video but I don't know if it's the Blu-Ray quality.
My ideal mismatched 80s-90s animated hero team (no Marvel/Dc)> Goliath (Gargoyles)> Wildwing (mighty ducks)> Duke L'Orange (Mighty Ducks)> Steelheart (Silverhawks)> Octavia (TigerSharks)> Ariel (Thundarr)Who rides...> Warlock (BlackStar)

>>153361634Comparing them with He-Man.> Skeletor is obviously the best villain.> He-Man has the best weapon & catch praise.> Ariel (Thundarr) is the best heroine.> Thundarr has the best setting.> Warlock (blackstar) is the best pet/beast sidekick.

>>153356952Download the fresh HD torrent, my dude.
>>153362707Zero idea how to torrent. Is there anyway to open them without downloading any apps to my computer?
>>153361634I've never seen Galtarr. Is it any good?
>>153361634I think we have a clear winner. Thundarr really did have the best characters, setting, stories, animation, and music. Galtar has awful stories full of jewish dwarves and bad recycled animation. Blackstar had awful trobbits and ridiculous plots, and the hero looks too damn smug and just flies around waving his sword at any obstacle and removing it.
>>153362964Zoomer, get the Qtorrent client, >https://www.qbittorrent.org/It's open source, free, has no viruses, adware or malware. then go to thepiratebay.org or limetorrents.cc, search like it's google, then click on the torrent icon. It's not hard. Thundarr 1080p is here:https://thepiratebay.org/description.php?id=47653293It's sad how this generation's technical skills have fallen.
>>153361634>>153361820>>153363339I think Thundarr had a weaker main villain than the other 2.
>>153356822And some of the groundwork for Blackstar was laid in the inferior second season of Flash Gordon.NBC told Lou Scheimer, who'd grown up loving the original serialized story in New York newspapers, that they'd buy more episodes if they were self-contained rather than a serial and had a kid-appeal character. :Scheimer shrugged and did it, creating Gremlin voiced by himself. Then Blackstar had the Trobbits, He-Man Orko, She-Ra a few different ones and Bravestarr Deputy Fuzz and his race.

>>153363466>Yabadeeee!Kill it! Kill it with fire! Wait, does fire work on dragons? Kill it with something else then!(a certain amount of that probably traces back to batmite. Even Tarzan had nakima but he wasn't an annoying little shit like rest.)If the episodes had at least been decent it wouldn't have been a problem. One of them just a total rehash of the first season premier.

>>153369788>BerbleIs this where Thundercats berbils come from?
>>153370876They're probably a wordplay on "bear" something I haven't figured yet.
>>153372696Gerbils
>>153370876I got curious enough about that to look it up on the Thundercats wiki:Ro-Bear Berbils come from the planet Ro-Bear. They crash-landed on Third Earth a long time ago and now live in the village of Berbils. They produce a variety of Berbil fruits including meat fruit, bread fruit, veggie fruit, and candy fruit that help feed the Thundercats and other Third Earth inhabitants.>meat fruitI mean fair enough it's just a children's cartoon but what the fuck. And "Meat fruit" implies the existence of meat seeds, just to add another layer of horror. To get back on topic: I did enjoy the series but I think they could managed to do it with way fewer Trobbits
>>153354762There was a lot to the the original concept that CBS had changed. There was only supposed to be 3 Trobbits but CBS wanted it to be like the 7 dwarfs.
>>153373316>dat filenameKek, good one. That wiki explanation is the in-universe explanation but not the out-world IRL explanation for why the cartoon writers chose that name. I suspect there was some cross-pollination between shows like Galtar, Thundarr, Blackstar, Thundercats, et al. >meat plantSee: corpse flower. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycUNj_Hv4_YGood thing those berbils don't have plants for... other needs.
>>153373316Oh I remember an episode mentioning bread fruit. I guess "meat fruit" makes for a more comfortable replacement so kids don't have to imagine what they hunted down and killed to eat....At least I prefer to think of it this way rather than the body horror of meat plants.>>153372766...Oh. That might be it.
