When did people start to turn against large casts of characters in cartoons and comics? Nobody really cared how many there were back on the day, but now "too many characters" is pretty much the go to criticism for anything. And whine it can certainly be a problem, it's rare for it be the only problem. To me, what it really sounds like is that people aren't interested in the main characters or the narrative, so they turn to other characters. Then when those characters turn out to be uninteresting too, the problem then becomes how many there are.
>>153352835Because creators will introduce 20 million new characters instead of developing the ones they already have.
>>153352845so nothing new?we have smaller casts now than before, if anythingbecause they are no longer compelled to create new characters to sell toys
>>153352835>Nobody really cared how many there were back on the dayou say this, but one of the biggest complaints of the later seasons of G1 transformers was that they would always put way too much focus on new guys at the expense of the original castculminating in the movie primarily consisting of people we ever saw before and the G1 cast dying horribly or only getting 2 lines
Its the sonic effect

>>153352854Creating new characters to sell merchandise still happens

>>153352835It’s not “too many characters”, it’s “too many characters that we don’t give a shit about”. Venture bros has a massively bloated cast, but it works because they’re likable and the show was written to fit those multiple perspectives. It’s when the viewers go “Why are we giving so munch screen time to this jerk?” that it becomes an issue.
