Mattel and Hasbro, despite the toy industry being in a downward spiral, are actually both bigger than most movie studios. But there's little future in toys now. These crossovers basically are like kingdom intermarriages to broker deals. Hasbro used to attempt to make it's own Hot Wheels for transformers, now they license that to mattel. If Mattel wants to do Transforming robots, they can license that to Hasbro, where as before they even contracted Bandai to design their own transforming car line. If Hasbro feels their IP isn't strong enough solo, they'll hook it to a Mattel IP in favor of floating one of Mattel's weak ones. And if they want, they can sublicense to Playmates.
