Flash/rigging in professional animation became popular in the industry around that time, and 3D became even more popular for movies and such. These techniques became so prevalent that traditional animation started to become a nostalgic relic of the past in professional environments here in the west, with people mostly just using it as a reference or bit in shows and movies.
