What are your thoughts on CRT TVs? Do old cartoons really look better on them? Would you get one if you could?
wh-what's in the boxes anon?
>>153379544>Damn Bitch, You Live Like This?
>>153379544I understand the concept of using CRTs, or at the very least good filters, for old-school games clearly designed around them, but I can’t imagine them having a noticeable difference on older cartoons unless there’s some comparison I haven’t seen yet
>>153379544they had pluses and minuses4:3 is objectively a better aspect ratio in every conceivable way, at the very least.being bulky as fuck sucked though. I pert near gave myself a hernia lugging my bigass VCR-built-in TV up and down stairs.
>>153379693another issue lies here: old games were not made with square pixels. they were made with rectangular ones, almost exclusively (and especially on old 8bit computers)a CRT TV didn't understand or care about that, you could just adjust the width or height to whatever. so they'd program the signal to stretch the image. Bam, free real estate.
I have multiple, thought I'd miss my flatscreen but you get used to it really quick.
>>153379780Do you watch modern TV with them?
>>153379816>Watching modern TVkek... yeah anon, and then afterward you can also buy music albums on spotify and play them on an mp3 player.
I want that. The tv, the ps2 and the guitar.
Seems like a fun idea, but I can see the novelty wearing off expeditiously
vhs and dvd definitely looks better on crt than on a modern hd display. they dont seem to handle 480i/240p very welli remember when led/plasma/whatever displays were new and capped out at like 720p resolution, and those seemed to handle vhs and dvd pretty well. so i think somewhere along the way manufacturers stopped giving a shit about optimizing for smaller resolutions
>>153379544I thought of getting one because I have a VHS collection and they all look bad on my smart TV. That might just because something is going wrong with my AV to HDMI converter though.
>>153380014Get a new converter.
>>153379544What's in the box, anon?!
I finally got my own house so I'm picking up my old CRT from my aunt's soon. It's like 24" and has YPbPr input. Will be watching a lot of old cartoon DVDs on it with my PlayStation 2
>>153380014Get a Retrotink 2X. It's not in stock on Mike Chi's website right now but it's the best low level solution for just needing a plug and play converter for analog video. You can go crazy with his higher end stuff like the 5X and 4K but the basic 2X is greatThere's other competitors like the OSSC which do a good enough job but are more enthusiast oriented and a little complicated to use. Hell if you lived in Massachusetts I'd give you mine
>>153379693I agree that CRTs are best for old games, but Dracula clearly isn't showing teeth when you see the raw pixels lol.
>>153380636NTA but I'm from New York
>>153379544It's the only thing we had when I was a kid. The family TV was a piece of wooden furniture that rested on the living room floor. We watched the show, and didn't think too hard about whether some other screen would be better or worse. Of course, we had the luxury of having a color TV.
>>153380636Thank you for the offer, but I live in Michigan. I'll look into this Retrotink 2X
>>153380890Where in the hand?
>>153379693It's a 480i 4:3 screen and DVDs are 480i so the image scales perfectly and sharply to the screen without any softening that's introduced by upscaling to a bigger screen. It looks good and even with 4:3 blu-rays like Samurai Jack you still get a nice image.
eat shit boomer, i grew up without ever having crv.
>>153381586Cool story, renter.
>>153381586I got one at a goodwill a decade ago and all my zoomie friends are jealous af.
>>153380014Common laserdisc W Really though get a Retrotink 5x or a crt.
>>153379544It makes a huge difference for DVDs with lots of interlacing like Avatar The Last Airbender and the colors look much better. The guy in your picture is using composite which won't look as good though. That being said, some people like the way composite looks.
>>153379677camera artifact, they don't look like that in person
>>153379693>scanlines give definition to Dracula's lips and teethI'm pretty sure his mouth is closed in that picture, so I don't know what teeth I'm supposed to be seeing.
>>153381739DVDs were cool. I kinda miss them.
For anything animated on film, you want high-res scans and a digital copy. (1080p is fine enbough for me, but it also depends what film. 16mm film might be fine on smaller resolutions but 35mm can go higher too) You want to see the cel shadows and film grain.
>>153379544Pisses me off because they used to just give these away for free, and now a CRT can run you up to a price of a cheap 1080p TV because some asshole game collectors bought them all for "nostalgia" and marked up the prices.
>>153381586I am a zoomer, had one and then another until I was 14, then a few months ago I found a new one after those had gone. It was a 21 inch screen a salvation army didn't want and I lugged it back home for free because I'm not a nu-tech limpdick faggot like you. I bet you couldn't even carry an 11 inch screen half the distance I did, enjoy your planned obsolescence and lack of a headphone jack, dumbass.https://youtu.be/JfUijIdr0vE?si=B62iCE_HgkSP6dRr
>>153384777Most Zoomers especially poor income ones had CRT TV's, back then you could literally yoink a free one sitting next to a garbage can and it would still work. I remember finding a broken projector TV that I fixed up and had for a decade before it just died and we had to leave it after a move.
Scart was so ahead of its time, makes retro media so easy on European TVs>can use the same cable for RF, composite, s-video or RGB signals>supported HD before HDMI even existed>had universal "switch to this" signal support so when you turned a console on, the channel swapped to it automatically, something HDMI still struggles with
>>153380594Oh shit. Is that some motherfuckin' Chulip?
>>153379926This. It’s like ditching your cell for a rotary phone. It’s gonna be near the first time you call someone, maybe even the second or third, but by the fourth the novelty will have worn off and you’ll just be pissed off by the inconvenience.Nostalgiafags always want to die on this retarded hill of “thing I had or way we did thing back in my day was better” even when it makes no goddamned sense.
>>153384745The only reason blu-ray is inferior is because some faggot in distribution insisted on re color grading every fucking movie to have that shitty blue tint.
>>153379693Well a blurry smaller picture would of course make the cartoon look cleaner and tighter. All this dirt and imperfections you'll see on an HD remaster wouldn't be visible.
>>153380676Some random anon tells everyone where he lives for no reason.
>>153380676My condolences.
>>153384777based zoomer
>>153379544In another 10 years will we see gen alpha with faux nostalgia for 00s shit like the fat-backed flat screens? If you miss the CRT aesthetic so much just put a filter on your video. Modern TVs are better in every way.
>>153379693I really love how my old Sega Genesis games look on the Sanyo that I got from Goodwill in 2009 (back when they were still common too). Thing still works and even came with a remotePS1/PS2 and Gamecube look great as well
>>153379544The problem with CRTs is that they are heavy as shit, and no new ones are being made. Meaning their prices are artificially inflated, and repairing them is a huge PITA.They are less important for film/cartoons compared to video games. Where older games do look a lot better on them.
>>153379544What's meant for 720 x 576 looks best in 720 x 576KEEP YOUR CRT!They don't have the "securities" of the modern stuff.
>>153384745Go to your library's website, they usually hive tons. My library is part of PINES so I can get any DVD that's in the Georgia public library system except for the ones in Atlanta. DVD is still good for most pre-2009 cartoons.
>>153385127You know you can have more than one TV hooked up to your computer right?
>>153384804SCART IS DA BOMB!!!
>>153385048Yes. Yes, it is.
Most of the old stuff I watch on my flat screen tv looks pretty good(all of it torrented and I make sure to choose the encode that looks the best) and I can put up with the black bars. I might buy a CRT in the future for vidya games. Am I missing something? Do cel era cartoons look bad on your flat screens?
>>153379544I, too, watch a CRT with a PS2 hooked to it. The image is yellowing though, which is not a good sign. The one problem is maintenance, specially nowadays. Digital TVs don't "upscale" the image that well, old videos coloring looks like they're... I dunno, blotched. I can run like, 360p videos in the CRT and it looks good. Also, it's the best for old videogames like the NES because it enables image and color tricks like this >>153379693At the very least, digital TVs should have a simple "emulate CRT" setting.
>>153379544Yes?If they were MADE for that era...Fucking dumbss thread. Piece of shit OP
>>153385148I remember The Matrix getting greener and greener every time it was re-released.
>>153385959Most good looking shows will look good regardless of what you're watching them on. But like I said earlier in the thread, what gives CRTs the edge is how they handle interlacing with shows like Avatar.
>>153386983I see. Aren’t there scripts to fix the interlacing issues?
>>153387016I'm honestly not sure. I've used my retrotink 5x to plug my ps1 into the tv and it looked good but idk about cartoons.
>>153386152Have you checked the cables**?
>>153386568They need to make CRTs again
