What are your thoughts on Don Bluth and his movies?
>>153393142The other animator people bring up when talking about 2D movies so it doesn't look like people actually just miss Disney movies when talking about hand drawn film.
>>153393142He is proof that some mormon dreams do come true
>>153393142Should've made more games.
>>153393142>don bluthworks hard, does his best>his moviesthe equivalent of a dessert that is literally fucking drenched in syrup to the point that it's getting EVERYWHERE and you don't really want to even touch it.Don Bluth never animates one expression when 19 expressions will fit. His characters never stop gesticulating like russian zelda cd-i shitbut everything else is so lavishly and wonderfully done that I can't exactly whine. just like, TONE it DOWN, man.
>>153393142I have only seen Land before time.I liked it.
>>153393142Dragon's Lair was cool but should have been more interactive . It basically has no replay value once you beat it
>>153393142>Don Bluth Kinda based, challenged Disney and forced them to up their game.>his movies?Ultimately a mixed bag. NimH, Land before Time? Classics. A troll in central park? Dogshit. I understand there was a lot more executive interference in his later movies, and that sucks because when the man was at the top of his game his work was better than what Disney put out, before or since.
Amazing animator, terrible storyteller.
If he was a porn star his name would be Dong Bluth
>>153393710If he wrote romance novels his name would be Don’t Blush
Lost effort thread. 5.5 good movies. 4.5 bad ones, Anastasia has a very messy ending. There.
>>153393710>>153393723Haha
Titan A.E. has its moments
Easily his worst movie by far
>>153394152Pretty
>>153394152Stith is my beloved.
>>153393142With a single word? Charming.
>>153396128I see.
>>153393142He's practically the culmination of all the nine old men and Walt proper wanted out of American family animation, and despite that, he doesnt get an ounce of the recognition he deserved. Getting dunked on by all the companies he worked for makes this 100× worse. He deserved better.
>>153394152>>153394670Even his weakest films obliterate modern efforts. I rather watch We're Back and Troll in Central Park a hundred times each than ever watch another illumination shitpile aga
>>153396595He didn't make We're Back...
>>153393142secret of nimh is genuinely incredible and is my favorite animated filmamerican tail, land before time, and all dogs are solid but with some flaws, more so all dogshonestly haven't watched the sort of middle ones he did after since i was a kid so i can't say much though from what i heard they are not goodanastasia was worse than i remembered, the uncanny realisitc and rotoscoped anastasia and her love interest clashed super hard with the other cartoony humas; rasputin was coolit's been a long time since i watched titan a.e. but i remember it being pretty damn cool
>>153397341Oh something I forgot to mentionFor as great as his animation is and how dark and moody he'd let things get (for a kids movie ofc), his films had a kind of dated narrative strutcture that, while it didn't ruin anything, was kinda old hat what with the disney renaissance coming along and upping the narrative game quite a bitI don't really know enough film terminology to really get it across but what I mean in particular is that Bluth films have hard narrative cuts, like the plot will is often stop and go. Think the fucking ray gun scene in all dogs, that's what I mean. A lot of the older disney films would have stuff like this too, where a scene ends and the next scene is just kinda something else, like sword and the stone and the animal sections. I'm sure there's a term for this kind of narrative structure, but it's something in a lot of his movies that disney got past during the 90's while his movies were largely stuck with it (they had worse things to worry about tbf)
>>153393142they were a fun time i'll give it that much
>>153393142the secret of nimh is one of a couple movies that still has this "I have to watch this incredible thing" little kid energy to it.
>>153397497The movie itself taking place in such a small area for a farm make's it feel much larger.
He is amazing.
>>153393142I like him and his movies, especially Rock-A-Doodle and Titan A.E.
>>153399696We're trapped like rats! Cock-a-doodle-doo!
I appreciate his commitment to sorrow
>>153393142great work by a great manhttps://blogs.iu.edu/establishingshot/2018/09/06/don-bluths-sustained-melancholy/
>>153393142>Hated how Disney was doing things>Left, established his own animation studio, made multiple movies>Gets a legacy where either people loved his work or act like snobs and treat him like a "What-not-to-do"It's weird because it's a popular thing to hate Disney and Don Bluth wasn't churning stinkers like a slop factory
>>153393142A man with the fire and will to carve his own path, creatively held back but being to weak of a writer to conceptualize his own work without the scaffolding of others.
>>153393142Why's everyone gotta bounce like Robin Hood?
>>153393441Someone mentioned his bobble walk and now I can't unsee it watching his films.
>>153393142Is he still alive?
>>153399696Rock a doodle is such a fever dream of a movie. I know it got some late on changes but I'd be interested to see if the original cut/script was a much more coherent movie.
>>153395612Bluth’s gift to the world
>>153400370it is a little bit fucked up but I actually quite fond of rock a doodle, my sister and I used to watch it all the time.but the only thing that sticks out to me as really weird and pointless about it is the whole Edmund not actually being a cat thing. It really doesn't effect a single goddamn thing, lmao. It might even be the single dumbest aspect of any kinds movie of that era. Why? why did they include any of the boy-edmund stuff??but all that aside really it's underrated as a Funny kids movie (sometimes unintentionally) like it makes me wish Bluth had more opportunities to make outright comedy. quite a few legit good jokes, sight gags and slapstick.
>>153400367He’s active on twitter
>>153394152There's an amazingly good concept trapped within Titan AE and it will never ever be revisited. It was originally pitched as a Live Action film.If anything was worthy of a remake or reimagining.
>>153393142i liked them as a kid something was always charming about them. but the amount of sheer furries he spawned dear god. still a really good artist and story teller
>>153393142I like his style
>>153393142The same as it was the last ten times you posted this.
>>153401189>the amount of sheer furries he spawnedThe amount?
>>153400592>Why? why did they include any of the boy-edmund stuff??Unironically forced onto him by producers because Roger Rabbit was hot at the time of production.
He had three truly classic movies in him: The Secret of Nimh, An American Tail, and The Land Before Time. That’s three more than most can achieve. Good for him.
>>153396595>We're Back!That's not a Bluth film
