>Conway recalled breaking into Marvel Comics through Marvel editor Roy Thomas:>I'd been writing for DC Comics for two or three years...but to paraphrase the joke about the actor's ambitions to be a director, what I really wanted to do was write superheroes – specifically Marvel heroes. Through friends I'd become acquainted with Roy Thomas, who was Stan Lee's right-hand man at the time, and Roy offered me a shot at the Marvel 'writing test.' Stan wasn't impressed, but Roy liked what I did, and began throwing some short assignments my way, including scripting over his plot on an early Ka-Zar [story].[8]>Following his first continuing-character story for Marvel, with his script for the jungle lord Ka-Zar in Astonishing Tales #3 (Dec. 1970), Conway began writing superhero stories with Daredevil #72 (Jan. 1971). He quickly went on to assignments on Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and both "The Inhumans" and "The Black Widow" features in the split book Amazing Adventures. He scripted the first Man-Thing story, in 1971,[9] sharing co-creation credit with Stan Lee and Roy Thomas.[7] Conway eventually scripted virtually every major Marvel title, and co-created (with writers Roy and Jean Thomas and artist Mike Ploog) the lead character of the feature "Werewolf by Night", in Marvel Spotlight #2 (Feb. 1972);[10] he also wrote the premiere issue of Marvel's The Tomb of Dracula, introducing the longstanding literary vampire into the Marvel universe

>In late 1972, Conway and writers Steve Englehart and Len Wein crafted a metafictional unofficial crossover spanning titles from both major comics companies. Each comic featured Englehart, Conway, and Wein, as well as Wein's first wife Glynis, interacting with Marvel or DC characters at the Rutland Halloween Parade in Rutland, Vermont. Beginning in Amazing Adventures #16 (by Englehart with art by Bob Brown and Frank McLaughlin), the story continued in Justice League of America #103 (by Wein, Dick Dillin and Dick Giordano), and concluded in Thor #207 (by Conway and penciler John Buscema). As Englehart explained in 2010, "It certainly seemed like a radical concept and we knew that we had to be subtle (laughs) and each story had to stand on its own, but we really worked it out. It's really worthwhile to read those stories back to back to back – it didn't matter to us that one was at DC and two were at Marvel – I think it was us being creative, thinking what would be really cool to do."[18][19][20]>Conway returned to DC Comics in mid-1975, beginning with three books cover-dated Nov. 1975: Hercules Unbound #1, Kong the Untamed #3, and Swamp Thing #19. He wrote a revival of the Golden Age comic book series All Star Comics, which introduced the character Power Girl.[21][22][23] Shortly afterward, he was chosen by Marvel and DC editors to script the historic intercompany crossover Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man #1, a 96-page, tabloid-sized, $2 one-shot, at a time when comic books sold for 25 cents.[7][24]>He continued writing for DC, on titles including Superman, Detective Comics (starring Batman), Metal Men, Justice League of America, 1st Issue Special #11 starring Codename: Assassin,[25] and that of the licensed character Tarzan.[7] Conway briefly returned to Marvel where he succeeded Marv Wolfman as editor-in-chief in March 1976,[26] but held the job only "about a month-and-a-half,"[27] relinquishing the post and being succeeded by Archie Goodwin.

>For a time, a confluence of publishing schedules resulted in Conway stories appearing in both Marvel and DC comics in the same month: The prolific Conway's comic books with January 1977 cover-dates alone, for example, are Marvel's The Avengers, The Defenders, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man,[28] and the premiere issues of Ms. Marvel and Logan's Run, and Superman and Action Comics.[7]DC Comics and later career>After leaving Marvel's editorship, he again wrote exclusively for DC for the next decade writing both major and lesser titles – from those featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Legion of Super-Heroes to such books as Weird Western Tales, Atari Force and Sun Devils. He had an eight-year run on Justice League of America, writing most issues from #151–255 (Feb. 1978 – Oct. 1986)[29] including the double-sized anniversary issue #200 (March 1982).[] Conway wrote two additional Superman projects in the oversized tabloid format, Superman vs. Wonder Woman, drawn by José Luis García-López,[] and Superman vs. Shazam, drawn by Rich Buckler.[]>He co-created the characters Firestorm with artist Al Milgrom[] and Steel with artist Don Heck[34] in the premiere issues (both March 1978) of the respective titular comics.[7] Two other Conway co-creations, the Deserter (with artist Dick Ayers)[][36] and the Vixen (with artist Bob Oksner),[] were scheduled to receive their own series as well but were canceled before any issues were published. He additionally co-created the characters Vibe and Gypsy.[] As writer of Batman #337–359 (July 1981 – May 1983) and the feature "Batman" in Detective Comics #497–526 (Dec. 1980 – May 1983),[] he introduced the characters Killer Croc[] and Jason Todd,[41] the latter of whom became the second Robin, succeeding original sidekick Dick Grayson.[7] With artist Gene Colan, Conway revived the Golden Age supervillains Doctor Death in Batman #345 (March 1982)[] and the Monk in Batman #350 (Aug. 1982).[]

Together they wrote a two-part Superman–Captain Marvel team-up in DC Comics Presents #33–34 (May–June 1981); the Atari Force and Swordquest mini-comics packaged with Atari 2600 video games; and three Justice League of America-Justice Society of America crossovers.[44][45] Conway contributed ideas to the talking animal comic Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!, created by Thomas and Scott Shaw.[46] Thomas and Conway were to be the co-writers of the JLA/Avengers intercompany crossover,[47] but editorial disputes between DC and Marvel caused the project's cancellation.[48] Conway was one of the contributors to the DC Challenge limited series in 1986.[49]>He returned to Marvel in the 1980s and served as the regular writer of both The Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man from 1988 until 1990.[7] Conway stated in 1991 that "I understand the character a lot better now than I did when I was nineteen. And one of the nice things about the Marvel characters is that you can keep them fresh by changing them just a bit."[50] His run on Spectacular included such story arcs as the "Lobo Brothers Gang War".[51] He relinquished writing duties on both titles when he became the story editor of the television series Father Dowling Mysteries.[citation needed] Conway's last recorded comic credits for many years were Topps Comics' "Kirbyverse" NightGlider[52] #1 (April 1993), scripting from a Roy Thomas plot, and a story for Disney Adventures, published in 1995.>Conway returned to comics in 2009 and wrote DC Comics' The Last Days of Animal Man, with artist Chris Batista.[53] In 2011, he wrote the DC Retroactive: Justice League – The '80s one-shot.[54] Also for DC, he wrote the Firestorm feature in Legends of Tomorrow #1–6 in 2016.[55]
>In 2015, he returned to Spider-Man by writing a story in Spider-Verse Team Up #2, and the "Spiral" storyline in The Amazing Spider-Man #16.1–20.1. He returned to work as a series' regular writer that same year with Carnage which ran for 16 issues until 2017. In 2016, he returned to his creation the Punisher by writing The Punisher Annual #1. From 2016 to 2017, he wrote The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1–9, followed by What If? Spider-Man #1 in 2018 and the oneshot The Amazing Spider-Man: Going Big, penciled by Mark Bagley, in 2019. In 2023, he was credited with the plot for the oneshot What If...? Dark: Spider-Gwen.Novels and Star Trek Comic Strip>In addition to comics, Conway published two science-fiction novels: The Midnight Dancers[56] and Mindship (originally published as a short story in the science fiction anthology Universe 1.)[57] He also wrote the February 14–December 3, 1983, dailies of the syndicated newspaper comic strip Star Trek, based upon the 1960s TV series.[58]Screenplays and TV producing>Conway moved into screenwriting in the 1980s, starting with the animated feature Fire and Ice (1983), co-written with Roy Thomas, based on characters created by Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta. Conway and Thomas wrote the story basis for Stanley Mann's screenplay for the film Conan the Destroyer (1984). Afterwards, Conway and Thomas also worked on the script of a live-action X-Men film for production company Nelvana that wasn't produced because of distributor Orion Pictures' financial troubles and subsequent bankruptcy.[59]>Conway wrote, and later produced, such TV series as Father Dowling Mysteries, Diagnosis: Murder, Matlock, Jake and the Fatman, Under Suspicion, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Baywatch Nights, Pacific Blue, Silk Stalkings, Perry Mason telefilms, Law & Order, The Huntress, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and two episodes of Batman: The Animated Series ("Appointment in Crime Alley", "Second Chance").[60]

>Conway frequently referenced his comic book connections during his stint on Law & Order by naming characters on the show after comic book creators such as John Byrne.>Conway's first wife was comic-book writer Carla Conway.[61][62] The couple have a daughter, Cara.[61] His second wife, Karen, is a psychologist who works with autistic children.[6] They married in 1992 and have a daughter, Rachel.[61] As of 2015, Conway and Laura live in Thousand Oaks, California.[6]>Conway's ancestral family background is Irish, as he described in his blog:>In my case, on my mother's side, I'm a second-generation immigrant. My grandparents were born in Ireland. They came to America in the late 'teens of the last century and lived a life not very different from the life my housekeeper and her husband live today. My grandfather was a day laborer in the Brooklyn ship yards. My (step)-grandmother washed floors at Hunter College in Manhattan. (My biological grandmother died when my mother was eight years old, so I've no idea what she did to earn a living, but I assume it was either piece work or domestic work of some kind.) Because they were lower-class Irish, they were the Hispanics of their day – tolerated, but not embraced, by the larger society, and viewed with scorn by the WASP upper class. ... Even my father felt that anti-Irish prejudice, real or imagined. In the 1950s he once spoke, rather bitterly, about being one of the two 'token Irishmen' working at his company.[63]>Conway was raised a Christian, but stated in a 2013 interview that he does not "have any religious belief at this point".[64]>In October 2022, Conway was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent Whipple surgery to remove the tumor, resulting in several hospitalizations. In September 2023, he declared that he was cancer-free.>On April 27, 2026, it was announced that Conway had died.[4]

Firestorm is great and well worth reading too.>>153421650>I'm pretty sure it wasn't Gerry's decisionNo, it was everybody's. With Stan off they book they all wanted to do something to shake it up and decidedto kill off a character. It was originally going to be Aunt May but everyone felt with her being old and on the verge of death anyway it would't have much impact so Romita suggesed Gwen. Conway was cool with it because he didn't much like her and thought she was a dull and shallow character..
>>153422175There was that whole debacle a couple years ago with Thomas claiming credit for co-creating Wolverine when all he did was ask to have a Canadian villain for Hulk named Wolverine. He also only did it once the actual creators (Len Wein, Herb Trimpe, and John Romita Sr.) were dead and just in time to get royalties from Deadpool & Wolverine. That was seen as a scumbag move by most at the time and soured a lot of people on him. But he also has a lengthy history of allegedly doing similarly underhanded stuff (part of why Jack Kirby drew caricatures of him and Stan in Mr Miracle >>153422092). There's a thread from last year that goes over some of this: https://desuarchive.org/co/thread/149590943Now mind you, not every slight against Thomas here is legitimate, some are pretty grievances or unprovable allegations, but it gives some good context for why his reputation has grown less than stellar and usually things like this don't come out of nowhere.
>>153420039Dan Slott is gonna live to 128 isn't he?
>>153422314Maybe you think her death was a good idea but I don't besides ig they really wanted itto matter then norman would have stayed dead for good.
>>153421419Conway's mid-2010s Marvel work was surprisingly great. Usually with older writers you expect things to be outdated but RYV and Carnage were both really good. Carnage epecially was a great throwback in style to Marvel's horror books from the 1970s.
>>153421843Terrible design, completely nonsensical and shitty villains and too OP powers that are limited by the hero being too dumb doesn’t make for an appealing character
>>153422409>Terrible design,No, you have shittaste
>>153421644Conway is a Bronze Age guy. The last major/otable Silver Age guys still left that I can think of are Roy Thomas and Larry Lieber.>>153422163He's probably a fag from r/comicbooks. They slurp the TCJ narrative of Marvel readily and see Thomas as little more than Stan's toady who did even less writing than Stan and stole credit for everything.
>>153420039Aw man RIP
>>153422075Silver Age is typically taken to be from 1956-1970 and Wolfman's first work was in 1968 so I guess on a very technical level he counts but it's only a few stories. Most would consider him a Bronze Age guy.
>>153422631>and stole creditHe stole credit for the creation of Wolverine, retard. Also bringing him in a thread about Conway (a real and talented creator) is fucking wild.
>>153420039RIP>>153420686He was happy watching his own creations meeting each other before he left.>>153422151Second Chance is just goldhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEToAtPApKY
>>153422328He's a Polish pedophile obsessed with Gwen Stacy and hatred of Mary Jane who's been shitting up and ruining all Spider-Man discussion on /co/ for nearly a decade because he got triggered over Peter and MJ being together in Spencer's ASM run.
>>153422723>He was happy watching his own creations meeting each other before he left.absolute kino ending.also thanks for that video.
>>153422735I am no pedophile now stop with this shit if this a joke it's not funny.
>>153420714I don't care if he decided it, but she had to either die or change completely. Eventually she became one of the worst Spider-Man characters, too boring and perfect. Oh but those two issues, 121 and 122, some of the best comics of all time. Good art, narration, dialogue, and plot
Think it's funny that even though he's the guy who first truly brought Mary Jane and Peter together (Stan had him ultimately end up with Gwen), he was still against the idea of them being married.
DON'T reply to bait and schizos
>>153420714Killing Gwen was the easy way out. She hated Spider-Man for killing her father, but Peter Parker continued to date her. Finding out that he was lying to her the entire time would have been some interesting drama, but then boom, she was killed, instant Sainthood. The "What If Gwen Stacy Survived" issue and Slott's "resurrection" both ignored that she should have no reason to like him/ Slotto just had her mad about dying, not killing her father and concealing the truth from her, deeply unethical and irresponsible.
>>153420039wtf Gwen got killed? SPOILERS dude

>>153422915When Slott's write women characters they lose 60IQ points and all agency.

>>153422831Peter and Gwen should have married MJ was a HUGE mistake now more far more fans hate MJ then they do Gwen. They should bring back Gwen and give her and Peter a happy ending, quite frankely fuck MJ.

>>153423438https://twomorrows.com/alterego/articles/14conway.html>CONWAY: In the '70s, when I was writing comics at DC and Marvel, I made it a practice to sketch my own ideas for the costumes of new characters-heroes and villains-which I offered to the artists as a crude suggestion representing the image I had in mind. I had done that with The Punisher at Marvel. Similarly, I sketched a crude version of Power Girl, including the open circle on her chest, which either Joe or Ric developed into the finished design.>RT: So there may have been as many as three design sketches for Power Girl, starting with yours! According to a Levitz letters page, Wally Wood suggested closing up the bare spot on Power Girl's chest. Hardly a major point, but...>CONWAY: Actually, closing the circle on Power Girl's costume was [publisher] Jenette Kahn's idea. She felt it was sexist, and she was probably right. I doubt Wally would have had such qualms, given his taste for ill-clad buxom babes. Wait, was Conway the one that decided to turn The Punisher into an anti-hero instead of a one-off villain?

Technically it was this game that got me into reading the comics. But still, RIP to one of the legends.

>>153434157The joke is that Conway created both.
>>153434264Well he was already an antihero in ASM 135, 6 issues after his first appearance. Conway wrote both issues. God this is a good cover. I can't believe that Ross Andru died in 1993, he was so young. I really like his art

>>153439233How does one into JSA? I know you'll probably say not to start with Golden Age stuff, so where is best?>>153441803>>153441796Not these anons but I like Gerry Conway and like anime/manga. Gerry is old and liked America probably when it wasn't in competition with other media sources and the internet didn't exist. So yeah he's not gonna like anime. I can accept that. I can also accept that they are drawings. But comics aren't really socially accepted fully by well-adjusted people you might actually get along with. They will not put you down for it but they won't tolerate your level of interest or get into it themselves. So yeah, I fucking hate these flamewar shit threads where it's the same "you're an incel, no lifer pedophile" against "You're a soulless goyim drone who has no taste and accepts getting cucked by trannies, women, and faggots in charge of the world."So yeah I fucking hate this argument and I'd rather be hearing from anons who know more about Gerry and comics. Because this is /co/ faggots.
>Creation of Vixen>what I was trying to address was what I perceived to be a lack of strong female leads in DC's comics at the time. Or, let me put it this way: there was an opportunity, as DC was looking for additional books. Surveying the titles that they have, it seemed to me there were some obvious openings for characters that had been underrepresented. One of them had been lead female super-heroes. They had Wonder Woman. To a lesser degree they had Supergirl, Power Girl (who I also created), and Wonder Girl. There were a lot of girls, but not a lot of full-formed adult female super-heroes operating at DC, so I wanted to create one I also wanted to create a character who was a minority, and the idea of a female Black super-heroine hadn't been played up to any great extent at that point. I think Storm (of the X-Men) was around, but I don't think there were very many other representations of that type of character in the field... She was kind of based on what we called supermodels at the time. It was a very strange social phenomenon that was starting to occur back then. You had these women who were obviously objects of the male gaze, but they were also extremely empowered. They took charge of their own image, their own business, and identity. I wanted to show that.
>>153442041>contd.>This was the 70s, so I hope female readers today will give us a bit of a pass on this. There were not that many active role models regarding careers for women at that time where you could reasonably say: this woman would have the resources to maintain a career as a super-heroine. What were the jobs available to women in the mid- to late-70s? Clerical work. Teaching jobs. There were very few potential jobs that would provide the potential resources and money that a character like Vixen would need to carry on a super-hero career. That's a horribly sexist reality we were dealing with. Plus, she's a minority, and that adds another whole layer of disadvantage that she has to overcome. So, it was a bit of wish fulfillment (for that character, not necessarily for me as the writer), and a bit of practicality to reflect something that was real in our society, i.e. the advent of these take-charge, supermodel/businesswomen.I found that interesting. I always saw her in other DC media but never knew much about her origin. Also damn, now that I think about it, what other heroes and villains are in Metropolis that aren't related to Superman characters? And should Metropolis be made larger in scope with new areas of the cities made into distinctive "burroughs" for lack of a better term? I think Gotham has some but I struggle to recall them.Anyway, I looked up foxy and how it came to describe cunning and sexy women but there seems to be a niche/subset of that applied to mostly black women. I guess that's all under the same umbrella term but the 70's just so happened to also be the time where black people were starting to coalesce and conflict with others as they were represented in America. You can expect this type of thinking out of a teenager from the 60's which explains part of why he thought in some ways in later years.
>>153426723I mean, let's not pretend like there wasn't some clear resentment based on his actual expeiences working with either of them.
>>153422335If he named Wolverine, he did infact co-create the hero. It's a badass name and carried the character who was a manlet with pointy hands. Stan Lee has been credited for less.
>>153423033>acts on social mediaThis combination of words shouldn't be a thing. What "acts" are you committing on social media?
>>153434456That is a kino cover. His run had some really good underrated/underrepresented ones. It really is straddling the line between 60's far-out imagery like James Bond posters and that gritty 70's edge. Funny how Liz's hair and Frank to a degree are the most 70's parts of that image while everything else still looks like Romita's original run.>>153430054Really seems like only Gerry did much with Glory. I dunno if I like this Lobo angle. Funny how many werewolves he has involved in his stories.
>>153442202>Stan Lee has been credited for less. And that's not always a good thing, either.
>>153442222Checked and true. I'm just saying that Thomas did deserve royalties for his contribution. If it was a suit design or origin for his contribution, that'd be different. You could just have another writer or anybody change things later. That's why Miles coatrides the Spiderman name, because Kid Arachnid wouldn't sell and eventually shelf the character.
Anybody want ASM 121 and 122 storytimed?
>>153441803Type that again without crying
>>153441938>How does one into JSA? I know you'll probably say not to start with Golden Age stuff, so where is best?I mean you can take or leave the Golden Age stuff depending on whether or not you feel like you can read GA comics. Same with the Silver Age and Earth-Two stuff. For modern JSA the easiest is the Final Days of the Justice Society of America mini which took them out of play atter the Crisis (but explains how they're able to operate in the present), the 1991 JSA mini, Armageddon: Inferno which brought them back and the Strazewski/Mike Parobeck ongoing. The team gets fucked up in Zero Hour but returns in 1999 and you just go from there.Eh screw it, I have some time before work. Here's All-Star Comics #58-59 by Gerry Conway featuring the debut of Power Girl.
>>153442733You should
We finally get to the boob factory.
And the second part of this story.
That's it. Peej will be a JSA/Earth-Two character until after the Crisis where she'll bounce around for a while until the 1999 JSA series. Hope you enjoyed it.
>>153442776>featuring the debut of Power Girl.Wow, 1976. I thought that she was newer, I'm not a dcfag so I had no idea lol
>>153443223Many thanks. I was considering storytiming these two issues myself. And many thanks to Gerry for creating one of my favorite characters.>>153439233Two in one day? Damn. RIP, Len
>>153444394I kind of get the impression that Gerry going to DC was treated as a big deal. He went there and basically got handed the Trinity and JLA for a long time and even had his own little area that he wrote for/oversaw called Conway's Corner which is where stuff like Firestorm came from. It feels like it was a bigger deal for DC than even when they got Kirby and unlike with Kirby seemed to work out a lot better for them.
>>153444492Len was an off and on writer. The JSA series (cancelled because Mike Carlin didn't actually want a series starring older characters) and being one of the guys who helped found the Ultraverse are probably his biggest claims to fame in comics. But he was a journalist, especially medical journalism, and ran a journalism course for a university in Chicago.
>>153423261Sharty lost.
>>153420911>>153420914>At 19, Conway began scripting The Amazing Spider-Man, succeeding Stan Lee as writer of one of Marvel's flagship titles.Damn that's impressive. Props to them for accepting a 19 year old for such an important role too, it paid off. I wonder if companies nowadays are less likely to take a chance on younger people.RIP Gerry Conway
