They took an episode using alternate realities as a gag for TV surfing as a means to show two people getting together over an oops baby really did love each other. Another episode about how the most out of control rick showed he might be the only one that loves his grandson. Those gave the show a lot of charm and made it endearing. >>153431740I stopped watching midway through Season 4. It was a real slog to watch Harmon use the show to help cope with his divorce. Anything that wasn't dealing with family drama was just awful. The Slut Dragon episode still makes me cringe and by the Story Train episode, it became clear that the writers room was clearly huffing their own farts and feeling very smug about it. I always thought I'd pick it up again at some point, but whenever I think about trying to get caught up, the prospect feels more like work than entertainment. I have a hard time caring. Harmon should have stayed in his lane and let the show be wacky and fun instead of trying (but failing) to make it dramatic and "smart".
The whole serialized vs episodic theme in the show would be more enjoyable if the normal episodes weren't degrading in quality and the plotlines weren't what's carrying the show.
