The body of a wealthy industrialist is discovered aboard a schooner, run aground in the baie de Somme. For a case of this magnitude, the best police officer in Paris, Amaury Broyan, is sent to the scene. The inspector quickly suspects the widow, heiress to a vast empire. The industrialist also had a mistress, Axelle Valencourt, a model who posed for numerous artists, notably Alfons Mucha. From the opulent neighborhoods of Paris to the cabarets of Montmartre, the inspector finds himself plunged into a complex and perilous case, in which everyone, including the inspector, will reveal their dark side.These are the first 2 volumes of a planned 4 volume series, the third has just released and I will get round to it. As far as I know, there is no "official" series name yet and they are all sort of marketed as standalones. The cases themselves may be standalone, but Amaury's personal life is a thread that runs through the series.Some lovely art in these ones, the cases are fine too, though there are some silly flashes of inspiration reminiscent of Hugh Lawrie in House that I don't particularly enjoy. I'm more interested in the characters and Amaury himself and his history.
