I didn’t realize until last night that the Shoe that gets dipped in Who Framed Roger Rabbit kicks a cop in the groin after escaping from the box it and the other shoes were kept in.

That’s why Doom dips it while giving a speech about making Toons “respect the law.”

That’s also why Eddie doesn’t react like Doom is killing a Toon for fun - technically he’s doling out (disproportionate) punishment.

Kind of makes the scene less disturbing than how I understood it when I first saw it as a kid (which was Doom killing an animal/baby-coded Toon for no reason).
>>
Moreover, if you look up the original scene from an earlier draft, the culprit is a talking Gopher that tries to “butter up” Doom before being Dipped anyway

If you rewatch the actual scene now, the part where the Shoe is “snuggling up” against Doom might have been the Shoe trying to do the same thing because it understands who Doom is and that it fucked up (and not it acting like a fucking kitten, which is how most people interpret it, including myself originally)

That’s why it tries to run away when Doom starts giving his “law and order” speech too (because it realizes it didn’t work)
>>
I also wouldn’t be surprised if there more lines from Doom explicitly laying out the charges (like in the original draft with the Gopher) that got cut, maybe for no other reason than time/pacing reasons. I also would not be shocked to learn that the Shoe originally talked as well, like the Gopher, but they thought it just squeaking instead would make it less intense (of course it does the exact opposite).

Tl;dr I don’t think the Shoe dip scene was
meant to be as disturbing as it comes
across

The Shoe kicks the cop at about 1:00 in the link. Its blink-and-you-miss-it, which again is why people misread the scene as Doom killing an Toon for literally no reason

If you think about it if it weren't for Doom, Toons could get away with anything since they don't pay taxes and could just retreat to their no go zone if they get in trouble. It would be like California's current homeless crisis except the shit on the sidewalk has eyes, speaks, and probably tap dances.

who made Doom?

Alternate Timeline where Frank Miller was around during the 50s

I hadn't noticed the shoe kicking a cop, and I wasn't aware that a previous version of the scene featured a talking gopher. Thanks for pointing those details out, I enjoy trivia like that. It does seem like the original intention of the scene must've been different from how I've interpreted it all these years.
I'm not sure which was the worse option; killing a talking and obviously sapient toon who's begging for his life after accidentally offending Judge Doom, or killing a puppy-like non-verbal toon for no apparent reason. It was gonna be disturbing either way.

Another day, another detail of this movie I never noticed before. What a flick.
>>
Fascinating, right? Like how in the deleted scene he acts fairly cordial to Bongo the gorilla when he wants to throttle Eddie. Bongo himself willingly called Judge Doom to the Ink and Paint Club in the first place. On another note, I always find it funny how Doom takes a seat in Jessica’s dressing room like he’s done it a thousand times before, even comfortably crossing his legs.

I think most people just took it to be just a shoe with eyes, not really anything intelligent. But more like killing a bug in a crueler than normal way.

“Rummaging around in a lady’s dressing room, tsk tsk tsk. What were you looking for, Mr. Valiant?”
The distaste in his tone of voice gets me every time.

Watching this, I just realised that Judge Doom has cartonnishly white teeth
I guess it's rather suitable foreshadowing that he himself is a toon

Not gonna lie, that is a good joke.

Gopher would not have been as bad, but I think they changed it because they thought it would be, ironically

They’re false teeth, though they also seem to have a false tongue inside of them considering we see it when Doom screams at the Dip.

This is also the first time I’ve noticed he pulls a rubber glove over his already gloved hand.

In the script with the gopher, he was red instead of yellow. I prefer yellow though, it’s a happier color.

Lmao, based. My friends thought it was the most fucked up shit when they were kids (one of them said he couldn’t even finish the movie after that), but it didn’t bother me one bit as a kid.

And she pulls her dress aside while Doom is watching. She ain’t fazed by that.

>>153436940
I’m surprised they got away with that even in an earlier script.

Anyone have any copies of that script that they could post here? I’ve never seen it.
>>

I do, actually. I’ve been perusing it myself recently.
