Imagine how much more impactful it would be to start her off healthy and whole, and then in the middle of the first season she loses her leg and never gets it back, having to adapt not just to the trauma of the lost limb but having to re-learn how to do bending because she can't do the movements that once came easily to her?Instead of feeling like forced diversity points, it would have become a massive challenge to overcome, showcasing her fortitude and adaptability and strength as a character as well as permanently establishing that this is a show with stakes because the main character is not immune to bodily harm. Such a waste.
