I keep hearing that the fighting in the new ATLA movie is too magical and not grounded enough in martial arts. But look at this sequence, Aang's second dodge is just him stepping back. No bending, no hand to hand, not even a fancy twirl like his first dodge, he just takes a step back. Is this what people really want?
>>153448825Cherrypicking.
>>153448825Aang is mainly characterized for being non-confrontational. It's in his core to avoid conflict and solve things in a non-violent way as much as possible. So naturally he'd be good at dodging. And good dodging doesn't mean doing fancy dance moves and flying around at every attack like a retard, but just stepping to the side a little to keep your ground and straight posture for follow up attacks. You don't know shit about martial arts if you think otherwise.
>>153449069It's not very fantastical or interesting though.
>>153448825Look at how his arms are choreographed, he’s still using baguazhang based movement in this
>>153448825What's the problem here?
>>153448825bruh
>>153450739The cameraman isn't flying by at 120 mph and there are no nuclear cube explosions.
Despite all the work that went into the fighting styles as evidenced in the art book, it never seemed that amazing to me in the show.I dunno. Maybe I'm blind.
>>153454996The beauty is more in the dedication, consistency and how it adds flavor to the world, not in mega impressive animations.
>>153448825That’s literally a bagua move though
>>153448825I like the new movie, I thought it was fine, but I understand why some people gripe - the appeal of the original series is how well-thought-out all the bending is. Every stance, every move, and how each fight evolves feels very justified within the context of how these styles are expounded on in the fictional universe of the show. Earthbending uses the forms it does because Earthbenders by necessity have to remain very grounded with a strong core to channel their bending around, Waterbending uses flows very reminiscent of judo and aikido because it's a style that's all about redirection of energy and attacks, etc. The newer series and the movie still has a great deal of that thought, but they also have a tendency to slip into style-over-substance territory where if a move seems like it'd look cool they use it regardless of whether it makes sense within the context of the show's bending styles. Though, to be fair, they don't do this nearly as often as people accuse them of, but still enough that it's noticeable between the two series.
