Why does /co/ mostly focus on capeshit, nostalgia bait, or coomer comics? Are they ever actually discussed as art here?
>>153453572Because those are the topics that can actually hold a threadUnless you storytime (and even then it's not guaranteed) you're not gonna get a foundation for discussion
>>153453572I try, sometimes. Mostly I get shut down by the two other people that read the non-cape comics, so no discussion ever really happens.Let me tell you this, however: most people here can't even handle superhero comics.
>>153454024>by the two other people that read the non-cape comicsPlenty existThe problem is a lack of overlap over what exactly do we all read to actually formulate discussion
>>153453572Rather that start a thread being such an insufferable cunt why not just spark a discussion about a comic you liked you faggot
>>153453572Sometimes they are, every once in a while. You gotta be kinda stupid to come to this place expecting detailed mature art discussions every single day.
>>153453572No, this is 4chan. If it's not genuine, it's bait to get autistics like me to reponds.
>>153453572What kind of arty comics do you want to talk about then?
>>153453572>The City (French: La Ville: cent bois gravés) is a 1925 wordless novel by Flemish artist Frans Masereel. In 100 captionless woodcut prints Masereel looks at many facets of life in a big city. This is pretty cool. I like the look of the woodcuts. Really captures the harshness of that industrial city life. Though it doesn't seem like the kind of thing that can sustain a thread by itself in the low effort way shitposts and ragebait threads do.If anyone wants to check this one out you can find the whole thing here:>https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/frans-masereel-the-city
>>153453765Not even capeshit storytimes can stay afloat anymore. Why would an artsy indie comic even get to finish posting?
>>153454040No, I mean I bring up a comic, I get one or two anons that read the same comic, shit on it, and leave.
>>153453572for the same reason the animation discussed here is always kids shows or adult sitcomsnot even a 4chan board can have a much more different taste from normies
>>153453572Anons who claim they want more variety of discussion seem to prefer starting threads like these to starting varied discussion threads
>>153453572Do you read any suggestion for discussion. I've been reading Charles Burns Final Cut and Chris Ware Lint recently, they're pretty artsy, I'd kinda like to talk about them. I really like how Burns writes young people but I'm not as interested in this story as his previous work, feels a bit repetitive after his previous books, haven't finished it yet though. I always want to like Ware but it never comes together for me for whatever reason, I feel like his style is not for me. It's kind of off putting and ineffective at pulling me into the story, it feels very cold, distant, mechanical. Also the big abuse scene at the end of this was a bit melodramatic compared to the rest, the big red lines and all, felt like something Bill Sienkiewicz would do in a New Mutants comic or something like that. He's got a new thing coming out this year though, might try that, probably won't like. This is all I have to contribute to artsy comics discussion.>>153454333These things are cool, they were a big influence on Art Spiegelman. Which I guess is kinda obvious if you look at them.
>>153455245These get replies. The discussion threads do not.
>>153453572not sure
>>153453572>>153454333Perhaps it's because the art posted is shit? Certainly looks to be the sort of thing mediocre artists like.>simple shapes>minimal delineation>ambiguous perspectiveIt's the beanmouth of its day, something unspecial and purposefully ugly, designed to be easy to replicate.>>153455250>Burns, Ware, SpiegelmanThese people suck. Might as well talk about Lynda Barry or Gary Panter, they make shitty art for nonartists to clap about. They're fundamentally unskilled and it shows. Clowes will at least pretend to try and trace a photograph periodically. The only talents to come out of the indie scene are Crumb and Woodring.
>>153458485Burns and especially Ware are definitely not unskilled, but regardless give me some recommendations of the good shit. I never liked Crumb or any of the old underground stuff though.
>>153458543Why are you replying to an obvious shitpost?
>>153458844Why not?
>>153458925Fair enough.
>>153458543I don't read modern slop, can't recommend anything recent published in the US; regardlesss, you're probably already aware of Métal Hurlant, try out its contemporary competitors. If you've never read National Lampoon, try Flenniken's Trots and Bonnie or Bodē and his Deadbone Erotica. A similar artist working in the same vogue as Flenniken is Al Columbia. Read old newspaper strips, Harry Haenigsen's Penny is very underrated. There are hundreds of amazing strips with incredible art published in the last century.>>153458844>shitpostSure thing, champ.
>>153459357I already love Bode and Al Columbia so I will actually check out Flenniken then. Never really read the National Lampoon stuff
>>153454796Because they’re shit and you have bad taste
>>153458485>The only talents to come out of the indie scene are Crumb and Woodring.>>153459357>Bodē>Al Columbia>>153458543>I never liked Crumb or any of the old underground stuff though.>>153459535>I already love BodeWeird contradictions (or backpedaling) going on here.
>>153459544How would you know?
>>153459706I discovered Bode through Heavy Metal so I always forget he from the underground. So he's one of the exceptions there, Pekar is pretty good and I guess Spiegelman started there but don't care much for his work from that period. He's a bit of a one hit wonder really. MOST of the other big names and comics from that time just don't do much for me although I wouldn't say hate them.
>>153455250>I always want to like WareYou have to be in the right frame of mind, I suppose. Don't know that I agree with the notion of wanting to like something, but we'll go about it differently.I tried reading Jimmy Corrigan once, found it frustratingly boring and gave up. Years later, I came back to it, read it all the way through, and it stayed in my thoughts for some time. I read Building Stories years after that and same thing, it remained in my thoughts. I wasn't excited about them like I had been with some of the genre comics, but I was definitely moved. That's how I felt with Charles Burns' Black Hole, and to a lesser extent Final Cut, and some of Clowes' work like Eightball, and to a lesser extent Monica.Kind of like they're almost great, containing nuggets of greatness, but I'm not left terribly motivated to gush about them to others. I read comics largely for junk thrills, but what I really get a kick out of is a playfulness with the form. That's why I at least somewhat appreciate these guys.>>153458485>These people suck. Might as well talk about Lynda Barry or Gary Panter, they make shitty art for nonartists to clap about. They're fundamentally unskilled and it shows.Lumping Burns and Ware with that group seems like a knee-jerk reaction. They obviously have skill. What's eating at you?
>>153459718You post on /co/ everyone has shit taste except me who also posts on /co/
>>153453572most discourse anywhere about anything is painfully surface-level. Enjoy in-depth conversations when they arise.
>>153460511Thanks for your non-contribution.
>>153453572>>153454333This art is horribly dated. The world doesn't look like this anymoreThere's no pollution in the cities, no factories with smoke stacks, men don't wear suits, or hunch over drawing tables.Even as dystopian as this is, it describes a dystopia that nobody today relates to. That poor soul crushed man depicted in these drawings has a wife and kids to go home to, a home that he owns outright because he earns a fuckton of money. His country's military is still wrong, his church remains relevant, his founders statues have not been torn downpic related just screams>woe is me I have built civilisationBut nobody can relate to that anymore, the suffering that exists today is far far worse than any suffering that this "dystopia" attempts to depict. By comparisan to today, this is a utopia
>>153460406I guess what I mean when I say I want to like him is that I like the ideas he's getting at with some of his page and book designs and his stories, but in practice it doesn't land. Like on paper his stuff sounds better than it is and that's disappointing. I actually would call some of Burns older stuff junk thrills, El Borbah or Big Baby for example. Lot of weird fun stuff in those.
>>153460629How did you manage to get everything wrong?
>>153460609It was, ironically, proof of my claim, if you think about it.
>>153453572I admire the artistry of this image but I always find these sorts of illustrations to be muddy and hard on the eyes. The compositional is aight
>>153453572Be the change you want to be. Even if your own thread doesn't get as many replies, it would still be more organic discussion than whatever discord group's running the Death Battle threads.
>>153453572Going to a board like /lit/ really opens you err to how people here try to be pithy and witty instead of explaining themselves, making discussion difficult. I am guilty of this as well but the point still stands
>>153463179>/lit/I only know of that board because of a namefag that ended up being famous for explaining what "sneed" meant.
>>153463194Wut
>>153453572Low IQ board populated by women, faggots, trannies, and manchildren.

>>153456733So you want more replies on your threads, not better discussions on /co/.
>>153460629>>153453572>>153454333The black/white balance of this is atrocious. It’s just not very good. The process by which it was made is nifty but that doesn’t make the product better.
>>153463811What's bad about it.
>>153465229The black white balance is atrocious, as I said. Far too much black and with very little cohesive weighting so it’s just muddy. It’s also completely devoid of perspective with planes layered completely arbitrarily. Tell me pointedly what you think is good about it.
>>153465523>>153463811Nta, but the abundance of black is what makes this pictures good (in addition to composition and contrast). It adds up to the atmosphere of silent depression - no voices, no sounds of nature, either silence or mechanical click-clacking of everything including people. Plants are working, people are toiling, but in silence and without any cause, without any life in them, automatically. Pictures look like negatives in everything, like a bright night - everything is seen clearly, but it is night nevertheless. You most likely automatically are trying to compare them with "traditional" black-and-white pictures failing to see the style and the atmosphere as the result.
>>153453572>coomer comicsSadly you can't fight porn >capeshit, nostalgia baitthey can be art, genuinely good. But of course poeple won't admit it or be open minded. But I do think that more indie comics and genres should be discussed. However, many of them are really overrated
>>153466433>horrible perspective>terrible balance of weighting and contrast>you just decide to say not uh it’s good actually! Great discussion this is why these threads are worthless.
>>153466765nta, but what is bad about the black and white contrast? The images have a lot of contrast and are very well composed and effective at portraying that extreme oppressive dark atmosphere, nothing is muddy or unclear at all. They're very easy to read. And the perspective doesn't seem important in such a stylized and distorted images, it's like critiquing a cartoon for not having perfect perspective, it's meaningless in this context.
Just look at this thread. This is the problem.Non-capes get beaten and raped by the few people that bother to read them. Meanwhile, capes get a lot more attention and love.
>>153466765you dont know much about art do you
>>153468483>>153467514>I-I-IT’S GOOD AND THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT! ONLY AN IDIOT WOULD DISAGREE NTA but do you really think this is how “discussion” takes place?
>>153468691yes
>>153468968Then it makes sense that you’re confused why it doesn’t take place here.
>>153453572Because capeshit is the only kind of comic that's actually available in the current market. >inb4 muh indies that not one soul on planet earth gives a singular shit aboutCapeshit is what we're stuck with. Cope.
>>153469024>inb4 muh indies that not one soul on planet earth gives a singular shit aboutI-I do...
>>153469691No you fucking don't. If you did, you'd just make threads about them instead of bitching that nobody talks about them. Fucking retard.
>>153469959But I do make them...
>>153470017Bullshit. I ain't never seen any.
>>153458485>>153460629>>153460730>>153463811It's funny how in one thread you get several people bashing the fuck out of Frans Masereel, but in another you'll get several praising Billy. This place is retarded.
>>153470128Perhaps it's the subject matter that's being drawn instead of the overall quality of the art itself. You'd probably have a few anons lusting over a loli/shota even if it was drawn by guy.
>>153470128who the fuck is billy
>>153470812A really bad drawfag. He draws with pencil.
>>153469024They're all available unless you're retarded.
>>153470063You're never around when I make them.

>>153456733Maybe be more interesting as a person next time fucko
>>153455250Burns' Black Hole has this set of issues where one character who's supposed to be normal and conventionally attractive is blatantly drawn by Don Simpson instead of Burns and he's never credited nor are there any articles or notes talking about it. None of the usual Burns shading, the eyes don't look like pig eyes, the physiognomy is identical to Simpson's but it's never brought up.
>>153472386You're lying to yourself and you know it.
>>153473599Is there proof? You'd think Don would be very vocal about this.
>>153453572This board is incredibly tarded.
>>153473599I've never heard this before, seems strange. Google is so shit it just keeps bringing up Mr Burns from the Simpsons.
>>153473766>>153475238sounds like bullshit
>>153475912It is. I made it up. Gotcha, bitch!
