I was reading the Superman: Time & Time Again collection and holy hell does the Newsboy Legion suck. They're lame, they're annoying, they're an entire group made up of sidekicks who would already be awful individually but together are completely unbearable. I can't imagine they were any better in the Golden or Silve Ages either yet they keep showing up. So it made me wonder who actually likes these turds and more broadly, who are some characters that keep showing up and getting used despite the fact either nobody cares for them or people actively dislike them?
>>
Yeah creators really thought kids needed their self inserts. Rick Jones and Teen Brigade at Marvel were similar.

The concept of a group of losers incidentally helping the hero is endearing to people just helping others, maybe if your focus wasn't self gratification you wouldn't care about self inserting in the powerful character

I think they were based on the Dead End Kids.

The "Newskid Legion" from My Adventures with Superman were fun at least. Although clearly they took a lot of liberties with the source material.

Its one part kids wanting to see themselves in the stories. That is a thing.

Its also adults wanting to see kids in the thing. It scratches the parental itch as well as lets them see how kids see the hero/heroine as...heroic.

Many people actually like Rick Jones, it helps that he keeps getting reinvented and doing crazy things. Snapper Carr on the other hand most readers are completely indifferent to, if they even remember he exists.
>>
I don't remember them appearing in Time & Time Again, but really the only thing I do remember of it is Superman singing "Walk the Dinosaur" while walking with an actual dinosaur. I thought they were alright in Kirby's Jimmy Olsen book.

Flip is in the back banging Famous Bobby.

this nigga
showed up in like forty issues just to bother the main cast and be a pain in the ass
even worse is that he was clearly intended to be annoying and unlikeable, but then a new writer came in who seemed to think he was meant to be an audience insert and after that this motherfucker would NOT piss off
>>
>>153455479
They were obviously based on the Baker Street Irregulars from Sherlock Holmes.

You can’t truly escape the cameraman.
>>
>>153455415
Wrong, they're fun and endearing.
>>
*marks the date on the calender I was reminded they exist*
>>
>>153455726
They appear in some backups.

>>153455896
I'm assuming that he was intended to be Kraft taking the piss out off himself and the other fanboys turned writers of his generation.
>>
>>153456311
definitely seems like it was, but Hannigan completely missed that and seemed to think Dollar Bill was legitimately endearing
HOW anyone could think that, let alone someone who was already working on the Defenders before taking the writing reins, is beyond me

Ultimate and supreme example of characters without fans, right here.
>>
>>153456142
Very likely.

Similar to Newsboy Legion is Snapper Carr. A character nobody wanted who stayed around for years in Justice League until he betrayed them and the League didn't even get mad they were just like "okay, go away Snapper" and he was never mentioned again

The only people who try to pretend they're fans of Moon Boy are people using him to bitch about Moon Girl.

Moon Boy was a punchline for decades.

>who are some characters that keep showing up and getting used despite the fact either nobody cares for them or people actively dislike them?
I dunno its hard to say in general, probably this usually just applies to a writers annoying pet character. Like gerry duggan randomly making sync the main character of x-men and having him fuck x-23, as if anyone ever gave two shits about sync.
>>
>>153458508
I actually like his design but otherwise yeah you’re right
>>
>>153458508
Honestly the cruelest joke is either way Devil Dinosaur has to be saddled with some twat partner stealing his spotlight when I just wanna see the red theropod.
>>
>>153458814
His design is brilliant, he is by Jack Kirby, but even narratively he existed basically to say "Oh, Devil Dinosaur is doing THIS!"
>>
>>153458721
He got that spot because Hickman wanted to make him more prominent by claiming he liked Generation X, the same reason he did stuff with Mondo. Of course by doing that he showed himself as being someone who never read the book because Mondo was a non-factor in it and Synch was basically what everyone decried Cyclops as: boring and whitebread. When multiple writers can't find anything interesting about him that says a lot.
>>
>>153458721
I'm sure there are some Generation X fans still about that care about Sync. Of course, Duggan's Sync isn't the same guy at all.
>>
>>153459400
I mean I won't say I don't like him but it's a good deal after Chamber, Husk, Skin, M and Penance even though the later two got kind of fucky.

Hawk and dove

Monet and Husk were also very randomly part of Cyclops' mission on Mother Mold during House of X, and notably Husk died immediately before they even got on the station so didn't actually do or even say anything (as did Archangel even though he has a healing factor).
