Anyone find it odd when shows that are supposed to be nonstop pure gag comedies have heartwarming moments? It always felt jarring when a show like CatDog did those. I even recall there being some episodes of Foster's Home that tried to do that, even though Foster's was supposed to be nothing but pure comedy.

One that always felt especially jarring is The Simpsons. It was supposed to be a nonstop ride of pure gag comedy. Nothing but comedy. Yet, there were a handful of episodes that were genuinely heartwarming and goes for feels, like Bart Gets an F felt heartbreaking at times.

Oh and Futurama always felt weird with this too. It's supposed to be a 100% gag comedy show, yet it had really sad episodes like Luck of the Fryish and Jurassic Bark.

I guess not every gag comedy is gags every single second of every single episode.

I always find it weird how many Futurama episodes had those sad endings, but the Simpsons has basically never done that except maybe like two or three times.

Have you ever heard of Comic Relief? When a movie has a bunch of serious and dramatic stuff happen, and then in the middle they toss in a little light hearted joke? Doing that eases the tension a little bit and gives the audience a break from the heavy stuff, so they don’t get overwhelmed. It’s a very effective narrative technique.

And it actually works the other way, with Dramatic Relief existing for comedy heavy media. The little heartwarming bits help keep the audience engaged because a lot of them will get bored with nothing but nonstop jokes.

I dunno where you are getting the idea that that was what any of these shows were “supposed to be.” I doubt there’s any place their creators say that, they’re not marketed as being that, and none of them were ever that starting from their pilots.

All of those shows were sitcoms, and I think what you’re describing them as sounds more like a sketch comedy show.
