I don't know why but seasons 1-3 of South Park feel like extra long amateur newgrounds cartoons.I can see why Matt and Trey dislike them
I treat the first three seasons of South Park as basically an unrelated show and find that it's still really fucking funny if you do that. It's best to pretend that what we think of as South Park started with the movie/season 4, and what existed before was basically a different show with its own style of humor.
>>153482458>extra long amateur newgrounds cartoons. That's a good thing
>>153482458Trey was technically an internet animator before it became a thing
>>153482515Yeah, back when South Park's head wasn't shoved completely up its own ass
>>153482458That's why they're peak and why the show got popular
>>153485980Anyone with a brain likes these seasons, I agree

Amateur Newgrounds cartoons took inspiration from South Park
>>153482458I love the paper cutout look, just SO charming!

>>153482504It's still insane to me South Park was able to make a movie for theaters just two (2) years into its run. How'd they manage THAT? Was the show really just an overnight success?
>>153492221>Was the show really just an overnight success?Yes. Yes it was. It was so completely outrageous even in the context of the late 90s that it rapidly grew in popularity and basically put Comedy Central on the map. What I think is crazier is that it didn't even lose that momentum until the early 2010s, basically all the way from 1997 to 2011 it was extremely popular.
>>153492307It lost some steam after Season 20
>>153492221A movie was also written into the show's initial contract
>>153492837There was?
>>153493543Read it wrong, the movie was signed in the renewal contract>Development for the film began during production of South Park's first season in January 1998. Co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone signed a deal with Comedy Central that April which contracted the duo to produce episodes until 1999, as well as an unspecified amount to produce a film based on the series.
>>153493688Oh, noted
The first three seasons had SOUL, the show becoming commentary on current events was its downfall, and the fact that Trey and Matt can't see this proves that they're talentless hacks who lucked into making something good before they ruined it with their faux-edgy political takes.
Yeah, they're rough and a lot of the humor is pretty abrasive and one note. Great for the time, but a chore now. I get that most remember it fondly as wee lads, and the whole, common refrain to fit in "le sigh, i just wish they got back to that stuff, muh adventures with the boys...' but seasons 4 or so onward are exponentially better. Once the writing and plotting and jokes became clever and like thought out, instead of just gross out. This board, the majority at least, tries way too hard to circlejerk over that stuff.
>>153494093It always commented on current events. The problem is Modern South Park uses it too much as a crutch
>>153494217I think most people know that early South Park is kinda rough. But people prefer "edgy for the sake of it" South Park over "Up Its own ass" Nu South Park.Look at how people barely discussed South Park after the season ended. It's mostly been one autist.
