I always found this a silly outcome. Why would you think mutants policing themselves is a solution to this problem? If they are living in human society then humanity should be able to police them rather than wait and hope for the X-Men to do their job. Especially given the X-Men are a secret organization so it makes no sense to count on them for whether or not humans should make the robots.
An easier solution would be "Hey, have you watched Matrix? Of course not, it's 20 years too early. But basically your robots do that. To mankind too, not just mutants. So fix that AI, you retarded midget."

I think this rather proved that the Sentinel program wasn't safe and, just as happened, could be exploited to hurt humans. They didn't know at the time, but the Sentinels indeed hunted humans eventually in the DOFT future. I don't think they were 100% thinking about the sake of the mutants, but rather the sake of humans. The whole "Mystique is a hero" plot came for Apocalypse and that was a terrible plot we better ignore.

It blows my mind that Mystique was regarded as a "hero" following this incident, specifically fangirled by Storm in the Apocalypse movie. She's a hero for.......Almost but choosing NOT to shoot the president/Trask? The fuck kinda sense does that make? Also Storm was a shitty person in Apocalypse because she didn't have a change of heart, she switched teams the minute Angel got killed and saw the tide turning
