Here's the idea I came up with: Mary is currently residing in a Wayne Foundation Halfway House not because she can't live a normal life, she just doesn't care anymore. She's through with trying to make a comeback, she's over Croc, no longer suicidal, just depressed. Batman visits her, he's pleased she's doing better, but asks her to find a reason to live. Then Mary inherits over a hundred million dollars from a eccentric superfan's will. She's now rich and powerful. At first she lives large, jetting between Hollywood and Gotham to show off her welt and rub it in the faces of all those who mocked her. Batman warns her she's making enemies but Mary doesn't care, saying Batman's just envious, but gets angry when he asks if debauchery is a good reason to live. Mary's life gets harder as scammers, moochers, lawyers, and beggars trouble her more and more. Her newfound fame wanes as the pubic gets used to Mary's antics and now sees them as pathetic. The climax happens as Scarecrow and Bane attack, each wanting a share of Mary's fortune. Batman and surprisingly Clayface defeat the villains. It turns out Mary hired Clayface as her double, as she became increasingly paranoid and reclusive, mistrusting everyone and everything as just out for her money. Batman then tries to help Mary, reminding her to live for something. Mary then resolves to do something worthwhile, and uses her remaining wealth to start a trust to help impoverished old actors and actresses, setting up a retirement village for them. Mary then retires there, reconnecting with people she once acted with.

I'd say that, setting aside the general design changes between the shows, it was kind of necessary to shift how she looks. In BTAS we see someone wholly dedicated to living her delusion whereas in TNBA we see someone slip out of normalcy back into delusion so we need a "normal" Mary Dahl, who as these threads have pointed out looks perfectly fine, albeit different, to juxtapose against her Baby Doll persona. Her debut episode does it at the end for pathos, her second episode does it to make you uncomfortable.

I always saw Mary as a Shirley Temple like character, at first being a big star, but as the times and movies changed, her roles got smaller and smaller, from star to supporting actress to bit part, from blockbusters to B-movies to Z-list schlock. By the time she's doing TV, she's desperate to make a comeback, but the role as Baby Doll dooms her career, and she finally snaps. She met Hagen doing B-movies at the start of his career and Mary took him under her wing, giving him tips and filling him in on who to work with and who to avoid. They reconnected in Arkham and are friends.

and people aren't getting what her problem is. She's not some alien freak. She's just someone like Gary Coleman. Her problem was she was a big star because of that one show and didn't realize it was because of that part. When she tried to do other roles, she failed, so she retreated back to the "part" where her life worked. It's a mental problem more than a physical one.

She was a lousy actor who couldn't get the roles she wanted in the original episode. They may be sympathetic, but all these villains have an unwarranted sense of entitlement.

If she just looked like any regular BTAS kid/short adult people would just dismiss her more than they already do, it makes it easier to see why nobody gave her a chance because she was always going to be the Baby Doll part in every sense, and makes the contrast with her 'real' self much harder to ignore

Even in her second episode, we see she is a functional adult with a normal job. She's just an everyday nobody like everyone else. That's why she gravitates to Croc. It's obvious he's just using the "I'm different" line as a bullshit excuse, but she believes it or wants to believe she's found a kindred spirit because it's an escape from her humdrum life. You notice she doesn't try to take Croc and start a normal home life. She immediately jumps back into crime because THAT's the life she wants.

I'm more saying that one aspect feeds the other in her case, and that's being visually represented in such a way that you're forced to confront both, almost in the same way that she has to (and then when you see her 'true' self for the first time, she smashes it in the same minute, believing she can't reconcile the two)
